About the Author
Jean Clottes is a prominent French archaeologist and former general inspector for archaeology and scientific advisor for prehistoric art at the French Ministry of Culture. He is the author of Cave Art, among other books. Oliver Y. Martin is a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Robert D. Martin is curator emeritus in the Integrative Research Center at the Field Museum, Chicago.

This book is one of those gems of a book that you hope, alas, every book you buy will be.
It is truly inspiring and I unreservedly recommend it.

OK-to-Good Material -- Horrible writing and editing

I purchased this book hoping it would help solidify my foundation as an investor. Currently, I am on page 156 of 294 and have really struggled to get to this point. The book is riddled with typographical errors, incorrect formulas and calculations, and LOTS of repetition. The 156 pages I have read probably could have been condensed down to half or even a quarter of the length. I recall one instance where the author said the same thing three different ways in three consecutive sentences. I got it....

None of the investment theory the author talks about is wrong necessarily, but the ideas just aren't as clearly defined or conveyed as in other value investing literature I have read. I think I am going to tough it out and finish reading it, but learning about value investing should be fun and interesting. It is hard to feel that way about a book the author and editors didn't care enough about to proofread.

Also, if you want to learn how to invest like Warren Buffet, just read the letters to shareholders which you can find for FREE on the web. Cheers.

A Great Introduction For The New Investor

After talking to Scott a fair amount on Facebook, I decided to give his book a try.

Let me say right away that I don't embrace the same investment strategy that Scott does. As founder of www.netnethunter.com, I'm pretty obsessed with net net stocks. That being said, I'm giving this book as detached and balanced of a review as I can.

Scott's book is written for people who are just starting out in investing -- new investors. If you're looking to stat out as an investor, then this book is a good first initial read to get a broad range of terms and strategies under your belt. Scott's writing is accessible and he's able to break down complex concepts into small pieces that are easy to digest.

His focus is mainly on Warren Buffett's contemporary investment strategies and he does a good job explaining them for readers. He also talks about a number of other contemporary investment strategies, such as weighted average cost of capital, but also touches on small pieces of Ben Graham.

Where this book shines is in the talk of investment temperament. This is critically valuable for new investors, and something that's more or less ignored in other investing books despite how critically important it is to your success.

This book is great, but not perfect. If there was a greater breadth (or an equal amount of pages devoted to) a wider range of investment styles, and these strategies were covered in more depth, then it would have been an easy 5 stars. That's not the book he intended to write, though, and for what it is it's great.

About the Author

Mary Beth Williams, PhD, LCSW, CTS, is an author, researcher, lecturer, and trainer in the area of trauma. In addition, she treats trauma survivors in private practice at the Trauma Recovery Education and Counseling Center in Warrenton, Virginia. Williams is the former president of the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists. She is a trainer for Customs and Border Protection, cofounder of the proposed 501(c)(3) US Vet Source (www.usvetsource.com); and author of many articles, chapters, and books about trauma disorders.

Soili Poijula, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, licensed psychotherapist, and director at Oy Synolon, Ltd., Center for Trauma Psychology in Finland. She has done pioneering work in Finland as a developer of post-trauma psychotherapy, is a member of the Finnish Red Cross Catastrophe Group, and serves on Finland’s Ministry of Health Advisory Board.

Makes You Face Your Demons Then Do Something About Them

If you're doing this one on your own, make sure you have somebody who's a good support and maybe can even take things over for you for a few days. The exercises take time, and they bring up things you thought or hoped you'd forgotten. Best way I can describe it is I'm back at work, my home life has dramatically improved, and I've faced down a lot of demons while working through this book. It's not an adult coloring book or some new age woo-woo. It makes you look straight at what happened to you, how it affected you in the past and is affecting you now, and how you can start doing the hard work to make your life better. Plan to spend at least a couple months on it, especially if you're trying to work or take care of a family while doing it. And be aware it will trigger whatever you've been fighting if you do the exercises honestly. It's like I've been running down dark tunnels with dead ends, and the only way to straighten my life out was to go back to the beginning and work my way through. This book helped.

This book is an excellent resource for the professional and the laymen. It offers insights and exercises that are practical and manageable. I ordered the Kindle Version, opting to save money, but found it most beneficial in paperback. It's the kind of book you pick up and put down several times before you work through it but each visitation provides more insights and growth. I would recommend this be a resource on every counselor and counseling graduate student's shelf. I found it incredibly beneficial throughout my internship and practicum and for my own personal growth.

The exercises and skills presented can facilitate better reflection and understanding of one's self and experiences.

I love this workbook. I'm nearly finished with it. I would highly recommend going through it with someone who knows and understands your PTSD. Whether that be a therapist or a trusted friend or family member. It truly helped me sort out my trauma and move forward in my life.

I would be more likely to recommend this book to those who are well into their knowledge about their PTSD. If you're just starting out with your PTSD healing journey, buy this book for later.

Jonathan Culler is Class of 1916 Professor of English at Cornell University. His book, Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics, and the Study of Literature, won MLA's Lowell Prize and established his reputation as analyst and expositor of critical theory. His other books include On Deconstruction: Theory and Criticism after Structuralism; The Pursuit of Signs: Semiotics, Literature, Deconstruction; and Ferdinand de Saussure (all published by Cornell), as well as Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction and Theory of the Lyric.

Review of Culler, _Ferdinand de Saussure_

Ferdinand de Saussure, an outstanding linguist of the late 19th century, lectured on general linguistics at the University of Geneva intermittently from 1907 to 1911. The _Cours de Linguistique Generale_ was not actually written by him, but compiled and edited by Bally and Sechehaye, who had not themselves attended his lectures, from lecture notes written by those who had been his students. As Culler remarks (p. 25), "Most teachers would shudder at the thought of having their views handed on in this way," and the fact that Saussure did not himself choose to publish a work on the nature of linguistics is significant. However, on the basis largely of the _Cours_, Saussure is often cited as the founder of modern structural linguistics.
Unfortunately for the 20th century, the _Cours_ is also the ultimate source of ideas which eventually settled into studies other than linguistics, such as sociology and anthropology, and most notably and most inevitably, literary theory and even philosophy. This in spite of the fact that Saussure's model of language did not survive, for very good reasons, in linguistics itself after the middle of the century, and has undergone, again within linguistics itself, severe criticism, of which perhaps the best summing-up is to be found in Roy Harris's _Reading Saussure_ (Open Court, 1987). Thus we have Jacques Derrida's deconstructionism, founded on a deeply flawed manner of dealing with human languages, at the very root of what is now widely known as the "post-modern" era. I recommend Harris's book highly to anyone with some linguistics background who is at all curious about the actual origins of so much fashionable contemporary thought.
Meanwhile, linguistics itself has been almost untouched by deconstruction and post-modernism. The term "linguistics," which frequently appears in the writings of such as Derrida, Barthes, Baudrillard and the rest of "the French intellectuals" and their many followers in academia seems to refer to Saussure of the _Cours_, rather than to the last century of actual linguistic work.
Unlike that of Harris, Culler's book can be approached rather easily by the general reader. It falls essentially into two halves, the first dealing with the ideas of the _Cours_ and the second with their impact on disciplines other than linguistics, the latter being handled mainly by describing the development of semiotics, the general study of sign systems. Culler is entirely uncritical of Saussure's ideas and merely attempts to describe them in a general way; if he sees the problems he does not say so. One of the most significant errors of the _Cours_, for example, is the notion that language creates concepts (rather than presupposing them). This Culler transmits without the slightest sign of awareness of its profound implications (such as that human beings with no full-fledged sign system-the congenitally deaf and those deafened in early life who due to isolation or other factors do not acquire a system of manual signing-have no concepts).
In fairness to Culler I confess I have not looked at his 1983 work, _On Deconstruction: Theory and Criticism After Structuralism_ (Cornell University Press), which actually followed the first edition of _Ferdinand de Saussure_, mainly because my main interest is linguistics rather than literary theory.
I can recommend _Ferdidand de Saussure_ as very readable; but I must point out that Saussure has long since gone the way of a number of other still derivatively influential 19th-century thinkers.

Fabulous Explanation of Cours in General Linguistics

Culler explicates how Saussure's Cours in General Linguistics came to be. He also places the concepts of Structuralism and Semiotics in easy to understand words.

This is a fabulous text for anyone who is new to Literary Theory. I read this during a required course for my English BA - Contemporary Critical Theory. Being completely new to the idea of structuralism and semiotics, Culler's explanation put it in a light that not only blew my mind but was easy to understand. It does not take much reading of Culler to understand exactly why Saussure's Cours in General Linguistics is such a game changer for how we perceive literature today!

It would be hard to imagine a better introduction to Saussure...

I am not sure I have a whole lot to add to the previous reviews of this book. Ferdinand de Saussure was an early twentieth-century linguist who had a profound effect on twentieth-century philosophy. I assume he also had a fairly large impact on linguistics as well, but I am not a linguist, and I am less familiar with the field of linguistics than I am with the field of philosophy. Ferdinand de Saussure was essentially responsible for the birth of structuralism which was a revolution in thought that had effects that cut across disciplinary boundaries, effecting anthropology (Claude Levi-Strauss), psychology (Jacques Lacan), and philosophy (Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, etc.).

It is simply impossible to have any understanding of twentieth-century Continental philosophy, particularly French philosophy, without some understanding of Saussure, and as the title of my review suggests, it would be hard to imagine a better introduction to Saussure's thought than the one provided by Jonathan Culler in this work. Culler's writing is extremely clear and lucid. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of linguistics, Saussure, or structuralism, in order to read, or get value from reading this book. This book is especially recommended for philosopher's interested in Saussure's work, since Culler spends the last two chapters of the book situating Saussure's theories within the intellectual culture, and trends, of his time, by situating his theories in relation to Freud, Durkheim, and giving a very brief explanation of Derrida's critique of logocentrism. The book is relatively short but full of substance. If you are interested in modern French philosophy, and you want to get a quick, but substantive introduction, to the linguistic theories that lie in the background of so much modern French philosophy, I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of Jonathan Culler's book. You will not regret it.
