A very practical guide on how to use Design Thinking in organizations

In "Design Works", Heather Fraser takes us deep into the secrets that have helped big organizations like P&G, Nestl� and so forth, create breakthrough innovation. The book is organized so that the reader will get insight into the methods and tools used to design new products and services, but it doesn't end there. Where other design thinking resources normally focus solely on the creation of a prototype, "Design Works" takes this approach a step further.

One of the three so-called "gears" describes why it's important not to focus only on the product or service, but that this is always part of some kind of eco-system; the experience surrounding that prototype. By focusing on the entire experience, from beginning to end, organizations are able to uncover new needs, and get a deeper understanding of how the user interacts with the product or service.

The next "gear" focuses on how to be able to execute the idea. All the time "could-be" innovation dies because execution is lacking. Sometimes this is because no one knows what to do with the prototype. In this part of the book Heather Fraser takes us through a series of tools to create the strategic business design. This includes diagnosing and building capabilities, but also thinking about the strategic implications and fit this new innovation might have throughout the organization.

The book is written in a logical way so that the reader can follow the different exercises as a sequence, thereby improving the chances for success and implementation.

Where other books on Design Thinking take a more theoretic approach, this one is hands-on and will show you how to actually do things in a logical and methodical way. A highly recommended read that has the potential to jump-start a new way to innovate in any organization!

if you are reading this book to use it, get the physical version. The Kindle version does not have page numbers which makes it very hard to reference pages for other people or to get to pages others are referencing.

Used the 3rd edition for three years (since release), and generally like it

When I began my undergraduate studies in Materials Science and Engineering, this was the book that was required. It's since been a great companion through (almost) all of my undergraduate courses, and is an extremely handy reference as a graduate student. I also had the pleasure of TAing for a section of our Intro. to Materials course this term, and I have some observations about this text. I hope that the publishers and authors work on some of the issues below in the fifth edition (since the fourth doesn't seem to have changed much/any from what I have seen so far).

PROS
1. Great text and figures: the text is highly readable and does a good job of placing nuances of certain equations and figures in plain sight (e.g. the conditional definition of "a" is clearly visible near the fracture toughness equation, etc.).
2. Great introductory/refresher level in ALL areas: the authors avoid giving "special treatment" to their pet subjects like many authors do in other undergraduate texts.
3. Good binding, construction, and paper. (Although this particular "pro" might be a "con" to some, see point #5.)

CONS
4. Problems can use a little bit of actual thought before the fifth edition instead of simply rearranging them (again): one of the largest problems with this text is the overuse of tiny figures in the homework. This makes life miserable as a student (trust me, I remember this clearly), and, amazingly, even MORE hellish as a TA and grader. Do the publishers honestly think that students will turn in scanned/printed figures with homework? Of course not! In the 21st century, I would think that there would be a clever way to make access to figures easier, like including them on the (otherwise pretty useless) CD. This pretty much my only problem with this text.

OTHER THOUGHTS
5. The cost for a new edition of this is well worth it for an undergraduate materials science student or graduate student preparing for a qualifier. HOWEVER, this is NOT the target audience in real life. Instead, this text is bought and sold quite frequently by mechanical engineers and biomedical engineers who have no interest in hanging onto a book that is worth a month's rent. Could the publishers consider a paperback (or other lower-cost) edition for those folks who don't actually care to hang onto this text?

this textbook saved my life for my materials science class. If you have a bad teacher who doesn't even go through example problems and just reads off years old slides that are somewhat relevant to the topic, this textbook will cover everything you need to know

A must have for welders and fabricators

I saved a lot of money buying thins book through amazon. The price was great and so was the quality. This book was exactly the same that the school was selling used for $50 more. It came in great condition with notes from the last user (this was a great help in understanding the material) The Book covers the basics of materials science and I'm sure it will be a great resource for years to come. The information in here is very applicable to anyone planning on building products that need to last. The chapter summary's at the end of each chapter have a list of equations and explanation of the variables. The charts are incredibly useful too. I am a fabricator and have referred to the tables multiple time to determine what type of steel to use for different applications.

Rendering humour into a different language becomes even more complicated when the translator translates film dialogues for the purpose of dubbing or subtitling. The aim of this thesis is to analyse translation strategies and techniques applied in the process of humour translation in dubbing and subtitling. The analysis is based on two animated films: Shrek 2 and Ice Age. In the thesis the original version of film dialogues is compared with its dubbed and subtitled versions in Polish. The material for the study comes from DVD releases. The thesis is divided into two chapters. In the first chapter the concept of humour is explained and humour translation is described. In this chapter I also provide definitions of translation strategy and translation technique, explain the difference between these two concepts and describe possible translation strategies and techniques in humour translation. In the second part of the first chapter the specificity of audiovisual translation is discussed, and subtitling and dubbing are described as two different translation methods. The second chapter offers a comparison between the Polish dubbed and subtitled dialogue versions. In this chapter I describe translation strategies and techniques used by the translators and compare the humorous effect evoked by them with the humorous effect of the original dialogues.

This unflinching, often shocking photographic portrait of teenage runaways in Los Angeles and San Francisco forgoes both the critical distance of the cautionary tale and the banality of the morality play. Instead, Goldberg forges a more personal, and therefore more horrifying, path. His photographs portray in numbing detail the lives of a loosely knit group of young people, as they shoot heroin, turn tricks, and show off their tattoos. Though photographs dominate the book, a significant portion is devoted to text: interviews, confessionals, and even reproductions of the subjects' writings and drawings. Goldberg is friends with his subjects, and in interviews they refer to him by name. He gets involved with their parents and social workers with varying degrees of success. I would just like to see the pictures of people I lost

I grew up in San Francisco, as a homeless youth during this time as well, and moved to Las Angeles after turning 18.Iam now 48,now live in Pittsburgh, pa..but knew the artist...I saw this book many years ago at Tower Records a.but could not afford it... I would just like to see the pictures of people I lost ..and wondering if many survivors are still around.

With savage beauty, Goldberg does justice to his subjects.

Goldberg documented street kids of San Francisco and Hollywood over the course of ten years. His work reflects the effort and emotion of that period. Unlike previous attempts to document homeless youth, Goldberg never sensationalized or objectified the kids he worked with. The text maintains individual voices, never judging, never interpreting, simply transmitting narratives that mainstream society would otherwise never hear. His photography radiates relationships of trust: he allows kids to illustrate their issues and amplify their voices, sharing their stories, artwork, and writings, without ever speaking for them. Such justice is rarely provided to an oppressed population. "Raised by Wolves" incites the reader's tears, anguish, and outrage - but also joy, that someone was able to successfully provide a platform for such truths to be heard. Goldberg more than did his part in attempting to educate America. The greater issue is, will we listen?

A real eye opener. Wonderfully put together.

This isn't your ordinary coffee table book. Jim Goldberg delves into the lives of homeless kids living on the street, cataloging and following two kids through his collage of pictures and stories. Although it's hard to resist just leafing through it's pages, the real message and story is in reading the book from cover to cover. Jim Goldberg ties the pictures together with stories, giving you a real sense of what these kids go through, what their motivations are, what their daily lives are like.
I volunteer helping out homeless kids in Seattle, and from what I've seen this book does a good job of accurately protraying these children, including why they're on the street. He's unbiased and uncensored in his view, I think echo's review reflecting this (one of the kids followed in the book) only stands as a testament of this.

About the Author

Rico Pfirstinger studied communications and has been working as journalist, publicist, and photographer since the mid-80s. He has written a number of books on topics as diverse as Adobe PageMaker and sled dogs, and produced a beautiful book of photographs titled Huskies in Action. He has spent time working as the head of a department with the German Burda-Publishing Company and served as chief editor for a winter sports website.

After eight years as a freelance film critic in Los Angeles, Rico now lives in Germany and devotes his time to digital photography and compact camera systems.

I like it !

I'm french speaking (Belgium), so I can not talk about how well this book is translated or not, like other reviews seem to explain.
It is a very nice book, I bought the Ipad version which is less than 10, and I have to say that although I master many of the features of the X-pro1,
but there are useful tips that were helpful to me when reading this book, and let's be honest, it's the price of a cinema ticket !
How many times didn't we spend 10 bucks for a bad movie and regret it afterwards ?
The book might not be essential for some people, but as a X-Pro1 lover, I had to have it, and "I love it" ! But, that's just my opinion.
And besides it's not too technical, and if some paragraphs seem difficult to some, there is no shame to try to elevate oneself and try
to go further in the knowledge of photography....
(sorry for my poor english)

Outstanding source for info

Honestly, I purchased this book because it was the only one about the X-Pro1. I did however look at sample pages before doing so. I must say that this book rates right up at the top of my rating of all books I have read over the years. This book is written in a style that is VERY easy for me to read. I like it so much I actually purchased a Kindle copy so I could use it as a reference (that way I can have many books and apps with me wheen I travel and they will take up very little room). I have learned more about this camera from reading this book than I did by going over and over the manual. GREAT JOB Rico!

ALREADY OUT OF DATE: BASED ON FW 1.11

Having previously purchased the Rocky Nook guide to the Nikon D300--which I thought was the most informative camera guide I had ever read--I jumped in to pre-order the Kindle edition of this X-Pro 1 book before it was released. Now that I have it, I wish I had waited to read a few reviews.

First and foremost, the book is based on the author's experiences of the X-Pro 1 running firmware version 1.11, which was apparently the most current FW version when the book was written. But as any XP1 owner would tell you, the camera underwent a pretty dramatic transformation in overall handling and operational speed with the release of FW 2.0 back in mid-September of last year. I'm amazed that the book, especially at its thirty dollar list price, wasn't updated prior to its release later this month, to reflect the significant improvements made possible by this new firmware. The result is that you'll find yourself reading advice and opinions about the camera that may no longer be valid.

For example, manual focus and its use were completely transformed by FW 2.0, but you'll find no relevant info on how to get the most from it here. In a section about AF use in challenging low-light conditions, the author advises using the AF assist lamp and the smallest size AF rectangle. That's advice straight from the original Fuji manual. But if you read the current online forums devoted to this camera, you'd know that just the opposite approach is now more successful: turn off the AF assist lamp and use a larger size AF rectangle. That's exactly the kind of insider info, developed through much use of the camera, that I expect to find in a book like this, but what you read may no longer be accurate because it's out of date.

I don't want to suggest that it's all bad news: mostly, the overall controls and menus of the camera didn't change with FW 2.0, so if you view this book as an expanded edition of the XP1 manual, with better and more detailed explanations for each button and menu choice, then it could serve you well, especially with no real competition on bookshelves. But it seriously misses what it might have been, and for that I deduct two stars.

Amazing second adventure of Flynn and friends

I was thoroughly intrigued to learn more about Flynn and the lessons he learns as he interacts with wonderful and mysterious creatures in this engaging and exciting story. Even while knowing that the book is for younger readers, I was interested in what was happening and eager to read the story. I also appreciate its simplicity, and yet there are important life lessons and wisdom to impart to the reader. Don't miss the return of Flynn and his friends in this second adventure! And as a real bonus, there are incredible, unique graphic art designs at the end of each chapter—amazing!

My son really enjoys this series so far, keeps him reading every day! After he finished this book he was even interested in reading other subjects because he felt more confident to read a chapter book. I think he felt comfortable with this book because he enjoys playing the game, and found some insights into the game as well as enjoyed using his imagination!

Some were voted in by current Boreham readers so they appear by popular demand. Others are clearly Boreham's choice or were popular in his day. In compiling this selection an effort has been made to include essays on a range of themes, those which illustrate different homiletical methods and others that are drawn from different periods in Boreham's career. The sermon "The Whisper of God" may at face value have not made the cut in Boreham's best but it is included because it is the best of his earliest sermons and it illustrates how his preaching changed in style, structure and length. "The Best Essays and Sermons of F. W. Boreham" demonstrate the way that Boreham worked hard to remodel his writing and preaching through such things as the removal of wordy clutter, for it is clear to see the emergence of a simple and flowing style. These essays and sermons have been brought together not for literary inspection and homiletical interest but so they might speak powerfully to readers in this contemporary age. The great hope for this new book is that it might stimulate among its readers one of the major themes of F. W. Boreham -- that each person, with their God-given gifts might develop their unique style (Dr. Geoff Pound). This book also includes: a profile of Boreham written by T. Packet makes me think of a package of seeds. You sow a seed, but what springs up looks much different. The difference between the body of the seed and the body of the plant is somewhat of a surprise. I still remember my pleasant surprise at reading Boreham for the first time. My heart was strangely warmed as I read through Thomas Chalmers Text in Life Verses Volume One. Here was a writer that combined so many elements that move me deeply: story, history, illustration, poetry, beauty, quotations and more. I had forgotten how much I liked wonder-filled literature, and reading the lovely story of Thomas Chalmers woke me from slumber. It felt like a new day. I devoured the rest of the book and series. What a surprise to find such treasure in the writings of a man, who but for the frequent mentions of his name by Ravi Zacharias, might be mostly forgotten. I'm so glad for the image of the flower that has yet to unfold its petals. The glory of its blossom is about to be revealed. What it will be is not yet fully known. It beautifully conveys the surprise and wonder that I hope every reader finds in these essays and sermons. May Boreham's thoughts, like seeds, take root and grow in our hearts so that the beauty of the flower brings glory to its Maker (Michael Dalton).

I first came to know the works of F.W. Boreham through Ravi Zacharias' sermons and lectures. He is indeed one of the great essayist who is unique with his gift for words and exposition. I have enjoyed the many illustrations used within this little 'Packet of Surprises', it has lead me to think more openly about our journey of faith and how to view the world in certain circumstances. Although his works are within a past context, they certainly glow in today's context, more so with grace, beauty, and eloquence. The only criticism I have to offer is that I sense an undercurrent of elitism in F.W. Boreham's writings, this of course, may be due to my non-Western upbringing. But nevertheless, very eloquent, clear, and unique.

One for my daily reading

Please, I beg you, buy this book. I heard Ravi Zacharias speak about F.W. Boreham. I'd never heard of the man that now holds a major place in my heart. His first essay, A Box of Blocks, literally changed my life. After reading it, I ran downstairs to read it to my wife, and have now had several people read it. I highly recommend this book. There is a depth to his writing that is very difficult to find with authors from this century. Treat yourself to an indispensable book for your collection, or give it to someone you love for their daily devotions.

Short reading for deep thinking

This author's essays were recommended by a Christian apologist, Ravi Zacharias. They were also one of the favorite essays of Billy Graham. I like to read interesting writing by people who combine spiritual truth, intellectual stimulation, and humor in an appealing and profound way.
