About the Author
Brett Flehinger received his Ph.D. in history from Harvard University and is an assistant professor of history at California State University, San Bernardino. He is currently working on a study of the democratic ideology of the La Follette family and has written articles and reviews on Progressive Era and New Deal political and economic reform.

Lots of primary sources, little explanation

This text is primarily a collection of speeches and other primary sources from the 1912 election. The subtitle is "A Brief History with Documents"; be aware that it is a very brief history indeed, with the emphasis placed on the documents. It's a small, rather short book, and I would have appreciated a more substantive history of this fascinating turning point election to accompany the documents.

About the Author
Barnes (Barney) W. McCormick is the Boeing Professor Emeritus at the Pennsylvania State University. He has a long history with the university, receiving his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering. He returned to Penn State in 1959 and, in 1969, was named head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Later, he accepted a distinguished professorship as the Boeing Professor of Aerospace Engineering. In 1985, Dr. McCormick ventured into the corporate world, becoming Chief of Aerodynamics for Vertol (now Boeing Helicopters). He has served as consultant to many legal firms as well as industrial and government organizations, including a position as scientific consultant to the U.S. House of Representatives. Dr. McCormick served as Associate Editor for AIAA's Journal of Aircraft, and is an AIAA Fellow. In 1976, he was awarded the AIAA Educational Achievement Award for his innovative contributions to aerospace engineering education.

The Cleverest Caper of Them All!

This true story set in Victorian London in 1855 is a beauty of a read. With Michael Crichton weaving his magic over the scene and Edward Pierce, mastermind and protagonist, we have an unbeatable combination. The author does wonders describing authentic period scenes and showing us the huge divide between the English middle class and the wretched poor in Victorian times.
Edward Pierce wants 12,000 pounds sterling that will be sent by rail to fund the Crimean War. The obstacles are huge. It takes four keys to get to and unlock the safe. This was before the days of nitroglycerine, so the safe could not be blown, and it was too heavy to carry away. All four keys are held by separate persons and must be found and copied. The thieves have to get the payload unseen off of a moving train. Mr. Pierce has a hazy background, presents himself as a wealthy traveling businessman with a fine home in London, a well-dressed gentleman with an appreciation of the finer things. As we get to know him better, we learn he has nerves of steel, a quick and clever wit, and is relentless planner with infinite patience. He is blessed with a mysterious mistress, Miriam, whose acting abilities could put Meryl Streep to shame. The suspense and tension as Pierce and his accomplice, Robert Algar, work for a solid year on their plan is riveting. Naturally, when the heist takes place, even the most careful plans have to change with unforeseen circumstances. Will they get away with it? Read it and see.
The author puts us in the skins of Victorian people of the time. For instance, the police department is only 25 years old. London citizens were accustomed to being very hands-on when a crime is committed. Not like today when one's first thought is to call the police. If a criminal was observed picking a pocket, there would likely be a great hue and cry by the nearest citizens and all would chase the thief until they caught him. Only then, would they call the police. A married woman was the "property" of her husband. This of course, is abominable for her human rights, but if she is caught say counterfeiting money, her husband goes to jail, not her. After all, he is responsible for his property.
"The Great Train Robbery" was made into a movie in the late '70s with Sean Connery as Mr. Pierce. One way or another, I am going to see it. This is a great read and a well-done social history of one of the most fascinating men of the age. Highly recommended.

Crichton's writing skills are truly amazing. After you read other books written by this famous author, you will not believe that this book has been written by him. The reason that I say this, is because when I started reading the first few pages, I thought I had ordered the wrong book. With an old English writing style, you will be amazed at how he can use various different writing styles, and still produce a fantastic book.

The story is exciting in its own right, but Crichton takes it to a whole new level.

Outstanding Retelling of the Legendary Caper

Drawing heavily from court records and testimony, Chrichton's novel of historical fiction recreates the ingenious planning and execution of perhaps the most famous crime in British history. It's a novel in a very loose sense of the word, since throughout the book, Chrichton stops the proceedings to explain Victorian social customs for several pages at a time. But this is not a complaint at all, for the details on dog fighting, rats, gender roles, fear of premature burial, chimney sweeps, tipping servants, the Crimean War, safecracking, and most importantly urbanization and railroads, are all integral to the crime, and fascinating historical tidbits in their own right.
Central to the entire crime is the understanding that in the 1855, there was no such thing as dynamite or other explosives, so safes really were impregnable without keys or unlimited to time to pick them. Thus, the robbery of the monthly gold shipment that traveled by rail to France to pay for the Crimean War was deemed inconceivable, as opening the safes required four keys which were held in three separate locations. However, along comes Edward Pierce, a safecracker and master con artist who wanted that gold. The book tells how using an incredible array of scams, assistants and associates, misdirection, boldness, and quick thinking, he obtains copies of the four keys and embarks on the theft of the century. Crichton does this is a fairly documentary style for the most part, however the dialogue amongst the criminals sparkles with period underworld slang (all of which he stops to explain).
The story is recounted with continual reference to the trial, so its clear from the get go that the plot was successful, yet somehow the plotters were caught. Even knowing this in advance, the suspense is maintained throughout as the plotters encounter unexpected difficulties, last minute roadblocks, and increased police attention. And despite this knowledge of the trial, the ultimate outcome is shocker. I can't say how closely Chrichton adhered to the facts of the plot, but the social context of mid-19th century England he puts it in is certainly well researched and accurate. Sure to please fans of of the David Mamet films House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, The Heist, and of course the classic George Hill movie, The Sting.

Good, needs editing

The story of Alexander and crew is fun and has lots of action. However, there may be too much.

Reading this second book in the series, it feels like a whirlwind of a plot that comes across as underdeveloped. Each step in the plot feels rushed as you move along. And you can't get away from the feeling that everybody, everywhere the characters go also unreal.

For example, you'll meet the sea captain who gives 'precise orders to his men' who in turn follow those orders 'precisely and concisely.' With a bit of help from an editor the author could better convey these archetypal traits through plot development. I.e., the captain gives a concise order and the crew goes about it. The reader could then observe what the author is trying to convey without reading through banal lists of character traits frequently seen in exposition.

At one point while I was reading this I actually stopped and started reading another story because I was so fed up with the middle of the story, how rushed it felt, and how the author was telling me how people were rather than showing me. And this was despite the fact that I generally liked the story.

I eventually came back to finish the book and the end was a bit better. The best advice I can offer is for the author to develop characters through dialogue and plot rather than simplistic lists of character traits and to slow down the pacing to develop each major plot point--even if that means some minor plot events are removed or the entire length of the book is increased.

good with issues

This is a good book in dire need of a pro editor. It's certainly not terrible but there are annoyances such as in the first book how it seemed the main character just fell in love. The author tells you it's so without letting you share in that journey. It just happened. That's not the only issue nor is it the only instance of the author strong arming the reader but that disconnect makes this book more irritating in parts than it should. That said I bought the second book... I'll probably buy the rest. There's an unpolished gem here. I just wish more time was spent getting this interesting story into shape.

Good stuff

I enjoyed book one well enough, but I felt like he repeated himself a little bit to much (In the Style of one Terry Goodkind)and that made me somewhat skeptical of book 2. But all in all I liked the characters and the story moved at a decent clip so I said screw it and went for it. Doesn't hurt it's reasonably priced either.

But he seems to have dropped that repeating business and the story is really picking up speed. I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing what else Mr. Wells has written that I might enjoy. Quite pleased I went ahead and picked up book two.

A MUST READ for all Serious Wine Students

I wish you could give 6-stars or a "Classic" rating. This book is to wine texts as The godfather II is to cinema. If you have not ready this book's section on wine tasting then you should not be allowed to make wine, sell wine, nor call yourself a wine expert.

A work of true genius!

This book differed from any other winemaking reference I have encountered. While the text is aging and some of the information is therefore of questionable accuracy (eg: "open top fermenters are losing favor for red wine vinification"), I found these lapses to be mostly in the category of trends in practice and therefore obvious. These minor shortcomings are overwhelmed by the unique viewpoints of a man known rightfully as one of the wine worlds giants. There are brilliant insights into vinification and wine structure in this book that I have encountered nowhere else. Not in other texts, symposia, trade journals or conversations with great winemakers. If you are a professional or serious amateur winemaker, buy this book and read it. Then read it again. Thank you Monsieur Peynaud for this gift.

A Bible for the truly serious wine student

Peynaud's stature in the wine world is legendary. He trained a copule of generations of Bordeaux winemakers, and through his words you can gain insight into classic winemaking and classic beliefs of that major region. The book is highly technical--I ended up reading it twice, to understand it fully. But Peynaud is also a poet, and a philospher, and his language is beautiful. This is a book that you'll refer to for your lifetime--provided that you're really serious about understanding the principles and philosophies behind winemaking.
