About the Author

Keith E. Herold started working in absorption refrigeration during his PhD studies at The Ohio State University, Columbus. This research focus was motivated by his work at Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio, where he was involved in building and running custom absorption refrigeration cycles under contract to the US Department of Energy, among others. Subsequent to those experiences, he joined the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was the director of the Sorption Systems Consortium, which was funded by various companies. Dr. Herold has authored approximately 50 publications on the subject of absorption refrigeration and his group developed the vapor surfactant theory of mass transfer enhancement.

Reinhard Radermacher holds a diploma and PhD in physics from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and conducts research in heat transfer and working fluids for energy conversion systems―in particular, heat pumps, air conditioners, refrigeration systems, and integrated cooling heating and power systems. His work resulted in nearly 400 publications, as well as numerous invention records and patents. He has coauthored three books on absorption and vapor compression heat pumps. His research includes the development of software for the design and optimization of heat pumps and air conditioners, which is now in use at more than 60 companies worldwide.

Sanford A. Klein is an Emeritus Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He received his PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1976, and has been a faculty member since 1977. He is the author or coauthor of more than 160 publications relating to energy systems. Professor Klein’s current research interests are in thermodynamics, refrigeration, and solar energy applications. In addition, he has been actively involved in the development of engineering computer tools for both instruction and research and the author of the EES program.

Good diagnostic interview guide -- but Warning!!

This is NOT the reference guide to the DSM 5 -- it is the guide ONLY to the "how to" do a diagnostic interview. If you are looking for the pocket guide to the DSM5 itself, you want the "desk reference guide to the DSM5" -- be sure not to confuse the two.

I thought this would be a great supplement for the DSM-5 and an important, quick reference for diagnosis codes, however, the numerical codes are not even included in this small book! This is a disappointment and I will definitely be returning to APPI.

Terrible format, useless questions, and miniscule font

With all due respect to Dr. Nissbaum for his contributions to psychiatry, this manual is a joke. It must have been put together quickly and sloppily, without consultation to people who practice or teach clinical interviewing. It is also formatted in a bizarre way that does not facilitate its use as a pocket (on the go) tool. Finally, the printing, particularly of the italicized font, is very poor, and the font size is tiny and difficult to read (especially on the go). Here is more detail about the 3 main problems:
(1) Terrible and useless wording of questions. For example, the manual suggests asking a child with suspected PTSD the question, "Do you repeatedly reenact that experience with your toys or dolls or when playing?" What incompetent clinician would use language like that with a child?!? If Dr. Nissbaum wrote this, shame, shame! My undergraduate students can write better interviewing questions. If you have a copy of this book, read the suggested questions about autism spectrum disorders. Anyone who ever interviewed a real patient would know that the questions are absurd! Presumably, the manual is supposed to help people in their training and learning. This is no way to teach!
(2) As noted above, the formatting is bizarre and useless as well. The symptoms and the questions suggested to elicit information about the symptoms are intermingled. Entire disorders are omitted and instead included as very long paragraphs in the exclusionary criteria for major disorders. For example, the criteria for body dysmorphic disorder are all clumped together in a horrible long paragraph, in a single run-on sentence, in a tiny font, as a footnote to OCD. What a mess!
(3) The visual acuity of the consumers of this manual must be extraordinary. The text is too small for anyone over the age of 35, and the choice of font type is horrible.

A Sceptics Review

We sceptics are an intelligent bunch. Go to any Sceptics conference and you will see and meet a large number of people that have a range of experience, qualifications and skills. It is impossible to keep up with everyone. But now you can ! Well, you can try.

Hazel Muir has written an interesting little book of over 400 pages that deal with all the "key concepts" of science. Collated into the basic areas of physics, chemistry, biology and 9 other areas, the book provides a useful background to all the great things in science.

Written in a clear and concise manner, it is not the type of book that can pass for a text book or other academic publication, but it can provide that primer for such debates on climate science and sustainability. My concern is the explanation of concepts cannot be done in two pages. For example, Muir attempts to explain the electromagnetic spectrum in two pages, the explanation is clear, but does not do the actual subject justice. But the subject of photosynthesis with the simple diagram does. This is one of the disadvantages of the book, not be used as a standalone authority on concepts on science, but it does provide a start. Muir writes all explanations in a maximum of 200 words, a big ask for some of the concepts that are put forward. No doubt something could be missed in the reading.

But then, this book would be a great little gift for that young sceptic in your life that loves science, or as an introduction to the field of science. The style is very journalistic, which is not surprising when Muir is a former staffer on the magazine New Scientist. An astrophysicist by trade, her academic credibility is high, hence I see her bringing science to people that normally would not read a science textbook. Something all good sceptics would appreciate.

So, I do recommend this book to readers, something that can be read on the train or late at night, just don't tell your sceptic mates !

ANYONE can read and understand this. You will learn, no doubt about it.

Whether you're only semi-interested in science or you're a born physicist looking for a great refresher, this book is a fantastic addition to your life.

Great Gift

Bought three of these (this, the Math, and the Ideas books) as gifts and they were all very much loved. Great coffee table book for quick reference on subjects you may be interested in but have little knowledge with. The summaries are very easy to read and even knowing a lot of the subjects myself there's a lot to learn. Highly recommend for anyone who likes science, even if you've never studied it before.

Interested in the Irish Boom/Bust ?

This is a very interesting book to read especially if you want some insight into the Irish boom/bust aptly named 'the Celtic Tiger and its affects on private business. I felt that the book was written in an honest way and appears to have taken a load off the author's mind.

I did have some differing opinions on some of the authors opinions - I would dismiss his discussion and conclusion in relation to macro economics (ie) his view on what caused the crash and his view that car tax changes (VRT) caught him out - this change was flagged for some 18 months so I can only assume he got caught out by not being ready.

This book is a great read for business owners and will enlighten all on the approach banks takes when the going get's though. Well done to the author for getting through this horrible period of his life - wish him well

If you are going to die then it is better to die fighting

I have completed this great book. I do not use the word 'great' lightly for it means to me on what you can achieve when it seems all is lost. It is more than an old saying when they say: 'If you are going to die it is better to die fighting.'

Just doing that in whatever challenge that meets you is the best therapy in the world. There are rewards quickly and victories even sooner. The first one is winning back your self respect, then by extension your family. Suddenly, you are a team player again; the world can wait a little longer.

For very different reasons, I know who George Mordaunt is though I have never met him. It does not matter that my early life in an Industrial Institution for children was so different than his. Our common denominator is the same and he would have survived that as well. This book is meant for all those who are still trying, still failing, bereft of hope. The industry of courage resides with that hope in never giving until the heart beat stops.

His narrative is straight to the point without being ever being patronizing or preachy. This is the first rule in respect: Being mindful at all times of those very much threading water against the tide.

It will, I believe, be the definitive book of everyday survival in an often heartless world. It also shows it can still care as well.

Gripping Forensic Tale

This is the true story about a murder back in 1915, and the ensuing tale of corruption, injustice, and forensic sleuthing that revolutionized the American courtroom. Charles Stielow was born in Germany and moved with his parents to the US and settled in New York. But he had a very low IQ, never learned to read and write, and even his speech was heavily accented. He worked menial jobs as a farmhand. He had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and ended up being arrested and charged with the murder of the wealthy landowner on whose farm he was working at the time. Stielow was found guilty of the murder and sent to Death Row. This gripping story, expertly presented by Colin Evans, tells of the various aspects of the case, from witness statements, forced confessions, courtroom lies, seemingly endless legal appeals, and finally --- miraculously --- justice.

One very intriguing aspect to this relatively obscure case was how it revolutionized the use of forensic evidence in courtrooms, not only in the US, but worldwide. Here is one passage from the book that explains:

"Those four gunshots fired on a snowy night in Western New York changed forever the face of forensic science and gave law enforcement agencies around the globe access to a system of accurate firearms analysis. That in itself is a fine achievement, but the greater and more lasting legacy of the Stielow case goes deeper than mere scientific accomplishment, right to the core of what it means to be human."

And that last part is what makes this books so moving and memorable. Even though Stielow was not a wealthy man, nor one who fully understood his predicament, he had a team of lawyers and activists fully in his corner, as well as the moral support of his fellow prisoners and even his jailers. This true crime tale reads at times like a modern thriller thanks to Evans' taut narrative and use of dialogue, taken apparently from old newspaper accounts of the trial. This is a book that should be of interest to history buffs and anyone fascinated by forensic science, as well as anyone looking for a good read.

This book's story took place long ago in the town that I live in.....besides being local it really had national effects on police techniques and legal precidents that survive to today. great story and the condition of it was very good.

This is more than a murder mystery and sending an innocent man to prison in New York decades ago. It captures the human drama of participants in law enforcement & politics who do their jobs in such a disgraceful manner that reminds the reader that human nature remains the same today. Good people to the rescue combat the bad people by promoting science in crime investigation and enough good people with common sense who defeat the bad people. Enough said. It is a good read.

Not only is this problem theoretically challenging, but it is also practically imperative. This book intends to study control systems with actuator saturation in a systematic way. It will also present some related results on systems with state saturation or sensor saturation. Roughly speaking, there are two strategies for dealing with actuator sat� uration. The first strategy is to neglect the saturation in the first stage of the control design process, and then to add some problem-specific schemes to deal with the adverse effects caused by saturation. These schemes, known as anti-windup schemes, are typically introduced using ad hoc modifications and extensive simulations. The basic idea behind these schemes is to intro� duce additional feedbacks in such a way that the actuator stays properly within its limits. Most of these schemes lead to improved performance but poorly understood stability properties.

Homage to Stoker's Dracula is a good read

Relying heavily on found written accounts and correspondence, The Historian is an homage to Stoker's novel as much as a retelling of the Dracula legend. The characters and the way they are drawn in to the reality and threat of vampires to all who uncover their existence is engrossing. The reader also gets to know these vampire hunters much better than Stoker's statues of Victorian manly and womanly virtue. Unfortunately I found another similarity between The Historian and Dracula; an engrossing brisk beginning turns into a slog to find out how it ends. Too many teary moments, internal monologues about the anguish being experienced and every incidental local encountered warrants a paragraph of physical description. I recommend this book to anyone who likes gothic horror novels, especially about vampires which are vampires, and not unfortunate folk condemned to an appetite for blood and the nocturnal restrictions and alienation the come with it.

This is a fascinating novel that is both literally intricate and a provocative take on the vampire myth. Ms. Kostova is a gifted young writer and her ability to weave a literary journey through history, folklore and adventure to save the mentor and friend of the novel's main character make for a truly exciting and sometimes scary read. I give four stars because I expected and wanted the meeting and ultimate confrontation with Dracula to be truly terrifying...yet it seemed in this book to be a very matter of fact scene that was neither scary nor confrontational. I hope to see more books by this author in the future as I think she has amazing potential.

Some good, some bad

I'd classify the book as a historical thriller, and I believe anyone with more than a passing fascination with vampyres would enjoy it. Plenty of mystery and intrigue. The main characters, Paul and Helen, are well developed and the story is easy to read.

There is a lot to like in this book. Kostova's description of their oft-changing venue is breathtaking at times. Richly visual. Immersive. The tension approaching the climax was extremely well done, easily the best part of the book. True history and fictional history are woven together so thoroughly it is difficult for a non-expert to tell apart.

In spite of that, this book has some flaws. I did not like how the story was framed. The flashes between present and past felt too jarring and forced. I didn't care about the daughter. Everything in her father's point of view came from a letter, written in such detail that I wonder when he had time to write hundreds of pages about it. Switching the point of view would've felt more natural, but cutting out the whole daughter arc and revising would be the only way to fix it.

I find myself asking where the editor was. This is a mammoth debut novel, and while I didn't feel like whole sections should be cut, the subplots were all weak -- mainly because there were too many of them. Could've used some tightening throughout. While the descriptions were good, many were loaded down with unnecessary adverbs and adjectives. When every locale and every person is described in vivid detail, it makes the story drag. I started to scan it for better pacing.

Paul suffers from the classic woman-writing-male-protagonist syndrome. Sometimes I felt like the characters were giving history lectures; in fact, I skipped over chapter 59 -- a historical "chronicle." The ending left me unsatisfied. After doing such a great job of building the tension, I felt like it went to waste.

The redeeming qualities of this story are enough to overshadow the bad, but no matter how you cut it, a diet and editing could've improved this book. Three stars.
