Bought it, passed it.
By R. Sheedy
I just passed the exam with a score of 831 on my first try at 62 years of age. This book was my primary study guide, but I vacillated between giving 3 or 4 stars. Here's how I arrived at four:

The book itself would have been a solid five except for numerous editing errors, which I find somewhat inexcusable especially when you take the quiz at the end of a chapter only to find that the book had some wrong answers. I'm glad I had a later edition so I didn't have to put up with scrambled chapters. I've written books myself so I am at a loss as to how so many errors could have slipped by. I'll blame it on the editors (or lack thereof) - just make sure you print out the errata page from the O'Reilly site as a reference. So for bad editing, I subtract .5 stars.

And then there's the practice exam...
This has got to be the worst practice exam out there for this test. The questions bear little resemblance to the real thing in either format or difficulty. If you barely pass this exam YOU WILL NOT PASS THE REAL THING. I was getting about 95% on the MeasureUp exam and then bought the Transcender exam after reading some of the reviews here. My 95% was worth 60% (FAIL) on the Transcender exam, which is much closer to the real exam in difficulty. I am not trying to sell you on Transcender as I feel it was over-priced considering that it too has accuracy issues.

Bottom line, I was ready to deduct two stars for the worthless exam (which another reviewer did) but decided to view it as a flawed bonus, like those coupons that print on your grocery receipt for items you just bought. So another .5 deduction - four stars seems about right. I would prefer that they didn't include the test as it could raise one's confidence unjustifiably.

Buy this training kit for the well-written, well organized, occasionally-flawed text and use it as a guide as you also include other sources from other books or the web, especially the MSDN site. Regard the worthless test as practice but beware of wrong answers. And, of course, good luck on your exam.

Book is great, sample exam is less than useless
By schmintan
The book is good. It covers everything on the exam, gives good tips, has lots on info and points to great links when it doesn't have space to give pages and pages of detail.. Content all seems accurate to me. It's a bit of a tome, but its all good and necessary info.

If your buying for the practice exam that comes on the included DVD, don't. Questions have zero representation to the actual exam. They are way too simple and short and have no resemblance to the exam in structure, content or difficult.

As the book is good, and if this review was for the book alone, I'd give full stars, but it loses 2 stars as the practice exam (a big reason I got the book) was so rubbish.

Conclusion- great book, crap sample exam.

passed 70-461 exam
By Rami F. El-chafei
I bought the e-book version. Very well written and easy to follow. It has excellent hands-on practice tests the end of each chapter. If you're like me somewhat new to SQL, I recommend to start with Itzik's Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals book. Having read both books and went over SQL syntax from Microsoft MSDN, I was able to write the 70-461 test and passed it. 70-462 is next!

14 Minutes: A Running Legend's Life and Death and Life, by Alberto Salazar, John Brant

14 Minutes is the memoir of Alberto Salazar, the most accomplished, charismatic, and controversial marathoner in history. The narrative is framed in the 14 minutes in which Salazar was clinically dead after his shocking heart attack in 2007. The story describes his tempestuous relationship with his father, Jose Salazar, who was a close ally of Fidel Castro during the Cuban revolution. The narrative follows Alberto's boyhood in New England, his rise to stardom at the University of Oregon, his dramatic victories in the New York City and Boston Marathons, his long malaise due to injuries, which resulted in a near-suicidal depression; his resurgence due to intense spiritual experiences and discipline; his close alliance with Phil Knight and the Nike corporation; and describes his numerous near-death experiences.

In this book those 14 minutes will be considered from every possible angle. Salazar will share some of the surprising things he's learned about cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular health. He will also share how modern medical science and technology are fundamentally changing the way we think about death. Salazar will acquaint readers with the latest research studying the near-death experience, which has burgeoned into a field of its own, blending science and the spirit in an especially fascinating combination.

But don't worry sports fans: mostly this book will tell the story of how a skinny, shy, insecure Cuban-American kid from small-town Massachusetts developed by sheer will―and God's grace―into the greatest distance runner of his time. Along the way Salazar will introduce important people in his life ranging from the globe's most famous socialist, Fidel Castro, to one of its most influential capitalists, Nike co-founder and CEO Phil Knight. He will transport readers back to the heady, electric days of the late 1970's, when running was changing American culture as radically as rock and roll had a decade earlier.

The book will take readers step-by-step through Salazar's signature races, including his wins at the ‘80, ‘81, and ‘82 New York City Marathons, and his epic, and ultimately self-destructive, victory at the 1982 Boston Marathon. Readers will travel to Cuba's central highlands and to the Willamette Valley of Oregon, and from the edge of the Indian Ocean in South Africa to a remote village in the war-torn Balkans. But throughout Salazar's narrative he will keep returning to those 14 black, shattering, miraculous minutes. Surviving virtual death taught him how to live and now it is time for him to share what he's learned.

Review

“14 Minutes is an inspirational account of a man who has fought with the Grim Reaper and won. Since he put on his first pair of running shoes, Alberto Salazar has been defying the odds. Through his memoir, people have the privilege to get to know this truly great man and walk away with a renewed appreciation for life.” ―Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor and 7-time Tour de France champion

“A World Record holder who prided himself on his focus, inner drive, and admitted obsession with detail almost loses a race he never thought he'd enter: the one against time. How and why did Alberto survive for 14 minutes with no pulse? His quest to intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually answer these questions gave me a wonderful glimpse inside the mind of this elite marathoner.” ―Frank Shorter, Olympic gold medalist, marathon, 1972

“Alberto Salazar has lived a remarkable life―two lives, actually―and this engrossing book does justice to them both, knitting miraculous victories with mysterious declines, and the blind ferocity of competition with the clarity of death. It is a story about running, but it is also about faith, grit, and the importance of chasing something larger than ourselves.” ―David Willey, editor-in-chief, Runner’s World

“I've known Alberto Salazar since he was a high school runner, but 14 Minutes opened my eyes to who he really is, what he values most, and why he aimed so high. I always felt Alberto had ‘heart' and this book proves it. It's a terrific read!” ―Bill Rodgers, Boston and New York City Marathon champion

“A dramatic account of the risks and rewards of top-level long-distance running.” ―Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Alberto Salazar was the premier American marathoner of the early- to mid-80s. After a top-flight career as a distance runner at the University of Oregon, winning 1978 NCAA cross-country race, Salazar made his marathon dbut at the 1980 New York Marathon. He won the race again in 1981-82, and in 1981 his time of 2-08:13 was thought to be a world marathon record, but after re-measurement, the course was found to be slightly short. Salazar also won the 1982 Boston Marathon in a dramatic duel with Dick Beardsley, called the "Duel in the Sun". On the track he was TAC 10K champion in 1981 and 1983, and on the roads, he won numerous races short of the marathon distance. His attempt at Olympic honors in 1984 was hampered by injury, which also likely prevented him from making the 1988 Olympic Team. In the early 90s, Salazar began running some ultra-distance events and won the 1994 Comrades Marathon in South Africa, over 90 km, (56 miles). Salazar has worked as a consultant to Nike and a personal coach to many distance runners.

John Brant has written regularly for Runner's World and Outside magazine. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and National Geographic Adventure among other publications. Duel in the Sun, on which this book is based, is Brant's first book.

A Fascinating Story From a Great Athlete
By A. R. Spitzer
Alberto Salazar's biography to date is a well written, honest look back at a career that was far too short and ended much too early because of a debilitating series of events and injuries. In the early 1980's, Salazar was the most dominant marathoner and distance runner of the era, and he has now become one of the foremost distance running coaches in the country. Salazar's description of his early career highlights the fact that he was a distance running prodigy, much like one of the outstanding runners that he currently coaches, Galen Rupp. Salazar's perspective on bringing Rupp along in a manner that avoids the injuries that shortened his career I found especially interesting. If Rupp has success at the upcoming London Olympics, the story will be that much more satisfying on many levels.

If there is one thing missing from the book, though, it is that Salazar's internal experiences as a runner are not elaborated upon very much, and there is little discussion about his own training at the peak of his career. The outstanding years that he spent in college at Oregon seem to be only superficially described. During the period in which Salazar's career was devastated by injuries must have been especially painful, yet one always feels as if a good part of the emotional content here is being held back from the reader. I would also have liked to have read a little more about his own insights about the effort that it takes to set the world marathon record, as well as many of his other accomplishments. One especially interesting aspect of the book was the relationship that Salazar's father had with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, which shaped not only his father's world, but his father's personality and how that personality may have influenced Alberto's efforts to become the athlete that he was. Overall, this was an entertaining book that made for great reading, though it might have been even a bit more rewarding if Alberto had really let go and shared what had to be some extraordinary emotions during his amazing achievements as a runner and the years after. Lastly, the title of the book refers to the cardiac arrest that Salazar had in 2007. As a physician myself, I find it very difficult to believe that he had complete cardiac standstill with no CPR for 14 minutes, yet he did survive to tell the tale, for which I have no explanation if the facts are indeed accurate. But again, it feels as if Alberto simply took this in stride, almost as if it were another challenge to be dealt with, maintaining a somewhat objective perspective on a highly unusual event.

Disappointed after looking forward to this book
By M. Roberts
I read an excerpt of this book in a magazine and was really looking forward to it. Alberto Salazar has always been arrogant and cocky but this book just seems to shine a light on his self-glorification. He seems to believe himself a God-appointed or self-appointed deity in himself. The thing that did it for me was him slamming Dick Beardsley. If you are not familiar with the 1982 "Duel in the Sun," they were neck in neck in that race. Alberto had taken the lead and for some reasons there were too many motorcycle cops which closed in around Alberto, blocking off Beardsley. Beardsley did get around the cops and caught up with Alberto. The video is on You Tube, it is really amazing. Alberto won by two seconds. You can debate this all you want and even Alberto admitted that he had underestimated Beardsley. But after that he goes on and on about how he would have won anyway and then goes on further to slam Beardsley saying that the race was Beardsley's peak and that he went back to his dairy farm and suffered great misfortune, several accidents, became addicted to painkillers "and I wrote a check to help him out." Did he really need to put that in there? It sounds as if he just wanted to delineate how superior he is. Really tactless and lacking grace. Listen to Beardsley talk about it and he never once blames the cops, just says that Alberto out-kicked him in the end. But you know what? It took Beardsley a lot longer than two seconds to get around the cops. Anyway, that is just the biggest issue I have with this book. This guy is a complete jerk. Not just the self-assurance of a great athlete that knows he is great but just a jerk. He even puts down Bill Rodgers, the guy that mentored him, and goes on about how superior he is to Bill Rodgers. Wow. I expected a lot more. He also denigrates how just "anyone" can run a marathon these days and puts down basically anyone that runs the marathon that isn't an elite runner. He also slams the Kenyans and Ethiopians, pointing out that they weren't interested in running until races started offering prize money. So insulting! He just hates that they are phenomenally gifted runners apparently. Anyway, I was very disappointed in this book. Don't waste your money. I actually got it from the library, glad I didn't waste my money. Too bad I wasted the time.

Very straightforward autobiography
By Paul
Just finished reading Alberto's book, and came away inspired and impressed that he would be so open and honest about his background and running career. I thought it was a great read, and felt compelled to get to the finish to take it all in. I also appreciated his personal views on his faith and how it plays a role in his life. You may not agree with him, although I do, but I don't see how you can criticize his honest and straightforward answers to his faith.

As a runner of similar age I'm also in awe of what Alberto accomplished, and continues to accomplish as a coach. Makes me even more a fan of the Nike Oregon Project. I wish them all great success.

Great little book
By magellan
This is one of the little Golden Guides that is out of print.
It's one of the best however, and was written by the former chairman of the Physics dept. at San Francisco State University.
The explanations are clear and concise and for such a small book it contains a lot of good information. For example, I recall the explanations of additive and subtractive color mixing were great since this can be a somewhat confusing topic.
Definitely worth your while if you can find a copy.

A Student's Guide to XSLT, by Andrew Whitmore

Many texts that teach eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) assume that their readers are developers who already have a certain level of technical knowledge. As a result, code examples are presented with minimal explanation and the focus of the material tends to target areas that are most appealing to experienced practitioners. When students read these texts, they may be left on their own to interpret the code and they may be unable to generalize beyond the specific examples due to an incomplete explanation of the material. This text is oriented toward students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who seek an introduction to XSLT that makes limited assumptions about technical background and covers a set of topics that are focused on the needs of students. Written by an author with years of experience teaching XML and XSLT to undergraduate and graduate students, this text presents intuitive examples with in-depth explanations coupled with insights and tips that mitigate typical problems that occur when working with XSLT.

Good Content, But a Bit Unprofessional
By Katruje
Don't get me wrong, if you're new to XSLT and aren't a strong with computers, this book will help you. It's well written and provides a clear entry into XSLT.

However, I did expect a little bit more. The book is essentially self-published, and looks more like a course guide I would buy at the university bookstore for one of my classes. The formatting is basic HTML material printed on 8.5" x 11" pages, and appears as if it's just a printout of a webpage.

All in all, it's still a good little book to get your feet wet with XSLT and XPath, but don't expect what some other reviewers call a textbook, because it's not.

Good brief introduction to XSLT with some shortcomings
By Thomas Wikman
This book is a quick and easy introduction to XSLT/XPath. The first half (slightly more than half) of the book features a variety of examples that deals with creating style sheets referenced in XML documents and then opening them in a browser. The second half features various examples using an XSLT processor (Saxon) to transform XML documents into html documents, CSV files, multiple XML files, etc. One fun example is in chapter 8; visualizing XML data using the Google Maps API. I should say I was fairly familiar with XML before reading this book, but not in a web-based context, and I was not familiar with XSLT. The book may have been a bit too basic for me, but that is OK, it is a good start. The book was well organized, straightforward and it had interesting examples.

However, as far as I could see there is nowhere to get the files for the examples. I had to type every example by hand, which gets tedious. The good news is that I did not find any typos in the examples, but there were typos in the text. The examples were mostly web and browser related whilst the XML I have been dealing with so far has mostly been related to databases, buffer storage, information exchange between systems, and other communication (not web based). In my opinion the focus of the book was therefore a bit narrow. The author also made some questionable claims such as “XLink is currently of limited usefulness as it hasn’t been fully implemented in many browsers.” Well, I’ve used billion dollar applications implementing XLink that do not use browsers to operate.

Overall this is a decent short book featuring good explanations and interesting examples, and I do recommend this book. However, I also feel the book had some shortcomings.

Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, by Janis Forman

Storytelling can be a lifelong and life sustaining habit of mind, a personal inheritance that connects us to our communities. It can also serve as an organizational inheritance—a management tool that helps businesses to develop and thrive. For more than a decade, award-winning author Janis Forman has been helping executives to tell stories in service of their organizational objectives. In Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, she teaches readers everywhere how the craft of storytelling can help them to achieve their professional goals.

Focusing on the role of storytelling at the enterprise level, this book provides a research-driven framework for engaging in organizational storytelling. Forman presents original cases from Chevron, FedEx, Phillips, and Schering-Plough. Organizations like those featured in the book can make use of storytelling for good purposes, such as making sense of their strategy, communicating it, and developing or strengthening culture and brand. These uses of storytelling generate positive consequences that can have a sustained and significant impact on an organization. While large firms employ teams of digital and communication professionals, there's much that any of us can extrapolate from their experience to create stories to further our own objectives.

To show the reach of storytelling, Forman conducted 140 interviews with professionals ranging from CEOs in small and thriving firms, to corporate communication and digital media experts, to filmmakers—arguably the world experts in visual storytelling. She draws out specific lessons learned, and shows how to employ the road-tested strategies demonstrated by these leaders. Although this book focuses on storytelling in the context of business, Forman takes inspiration from narratives in literature and film, philosophical and social thought, and relevant concepts from a variety of other disciplines to instruct the reader on how to develop truly authentic and meaningful tales to drive success. A final chapter brings readers back to square one: the development of their own "signature story."

This book is a pioneering work that guides us beyond the pressure and noise of daily organizational life to influence people in a sustained, powerful way. It teaches us to be fluent storytellers who succeed by mastering this vital skill.

Review
"Forman brings a unique expertise in the humanities and management disciplines. Her years of experience advising MBA students on strategy projects that require storytelling and consulting with executives give her a unique advantage as an author. This book should appeal to business professionals who want to learn how the power of storytelling can move an organization through a large-scale change, inculcate a cultural change, or execute strategy. Consultants will appreciate the in-depth case studies, diagnostic checklists for crafting stories, and connections to management concepts."—Gail Fann Thomas, International Journal of Business Communication

"It is unusual to find solid research and practical guidance blended as skillfully as in this well-validated, readable, and practical guidebook . . . A valuable resource for rhetoricians as well as business scholars and practitioners. Highly recommended."—M. S. Myers, Choice

"Forman provides compelling case studies that show why storytelling works in a business setting. . . She writes, 'Stories can cut through the busyness to capture attention, engage and influence people, create meaning, exemplify values, and gain trust.'"—Sharon Shinn, BizEd

"In Storytelling in Business, Janis Forman shows how successful leaders leverage their ability to tell authentic, compelling stories. For scholars, this book offers intriguing applications of humanities concepts to important business phenomena. For business practitioners, this book offers thought-provoking lessons about how to inspire and motivate others through ethical storytelling."—Daphne A. Jameson, Cornell University

"Forman has produced a long-overdue and absolutely convincing account of the importance of narrative in directing, inspiring, and shaping organizations. There is a way to use storytelling to great advantage in any organization, and Forman's book will show you how."—Kathy Rentz, University of Cincinnati
"Many people in business understand that storytelling has the power to shape an organization's mission, engage employees, motivate customers, and influence public and shareholder perceptions. However, few people have the strategic and creative skills to develop their best stories and use them in the most compelling way. More than just a 'how to' book, Storytelling in Business provides a framework for understanding the purposes and elements of organizational storytelling. This book challenges us all to develop fluency in storytelling and guides us through the process of building a storytelling habit of mind."—Barbara Shwom, Northwestern University and coauthor of Business Communication: Polishing Your Professional Presence

Required reading for communication professionals AND executives
By Karl K
Two important observations about this brief, yet thorough book.

First, it should be required reading by EVERY corporate communications professional, and EVERY marketing professional.

Second, it should be required reading for any executive faced with a tough turnaround challenge or faced with implementing critical changes - whether a CEO of an entire enterprise or a manager of division or business line. (In fact, a subtitle for some of the examples Forman presents might be "How to Save Your Company with Storytelling.")

For a corporate communications or marketing professional, the story telling principles outlined in this book should be a key part of your arsenal. If you haven't created an "authentic" and "fluent" story or set of stories for your company or your product line, get this book and see how it gets done, and do it for your business. Through a series of case studies from four companies - Schering-Plough, FedEx, Chevron, and Philips - Forman delves deeply into how these businesses formulated their stories and implemented their delivery to key audiences. (Forman also brings in examples from other companies besides these four). Forman lays out the lessons learned and provides a set of checklists for you to use in developing your own stories. And while Forman's case studies come from large organizations, the principles and lessons will work for smaller enterprises.

However, the book is more than a how-to book. It also weaves in examples from literature, film, and personal stories.

For me, the most compelling part of the book is Forman's section on the turnaround of Schering-Plough, and how CEO Fred Hassan and his team used storytelling principles in their effort to resurrect what Hassan called "a wounded company in prolonged decline." By formulating a 5-chapter prospective narrative about where they planned to take the company, Hassan and his team laid out a turnaround vision that was used to communicate with employees, stakeholders, and regulators. This story dovetailed with the turnaround strategic plan and roadmap. As I was reading the Schering-Plough section of the book, it was astonishing to me how much effort and intelligence were brought to bear to formulate the story, deliver the story over a long time period, AND implement business changes necessary to make the story come true. Whatever the company paid Hassan and his team was not enough. Though the story was never quite finished as originally formulated - Schering-Plough eventually merged with Merck - you know that the ending would have occurred as planned.

"Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization" - the end product of a four-year effort and hundreds of interviews with business leaders - is an outstanding treatment of this important business communication technique. And done in a little more than 200 pages.

Your New Engagement Strategy
By GFT
I have several storytelling books on my shelf, but Forman's, Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, is now my favorite. Her research for this book includes interviews with more than 140 storytelling experts including corporate communication directors, CEO's of small companies, business communication university faculty, and filmmakers. Using this research, she develops a four-component framework of organizational storytelling: authenticity, fluency, trust, and a focus on business objectives. While Forman admittedly leaves theoretical jargon behind, her book is built on a strong foundation of expert practical experience as well as the latest research. In addition to practical diagnostic checklists, Forman takes us on a journey through four best practice storytelling organizations. In a world where employees, customers, and investors insist on more engagement, Forman shows us how stories can help us make better connections with our constituents-- not only incorporating their stories into our organizational stories, but by carefully listening to their stories to better understand their perspectives.

Story puts the POW in power
By Park Howell
Storytelling in Business is the ideal guide to help remind executives and leaders how to engage employees, shareholders, stakeholders and customers through the bewitchery of story. Its current case studies demonstrate how major companies like FedEx, Schering-Plough, Chevron and others use the power of authentic, purpose-told stories to captivate internal and external audiences and move mountains. It's the best primer for business storytelling I've seen in some time.
