In their history the Boston Celtics have hung 16 NBA championship banners from the roof of their home arena, the last won by the 1985-86 team. The team ended the 1984-85 season by losing the seventh game of the final series, and those in charge felt the loss was a result of the weak bench, thus forcing the five starters to play too many minutes. So, in an unprecedented move, management got rid of all the bench players and restocked the team, their major acquisition being backup center Bill Walton. He joined Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson to form a team that went 67-15, with a 40-1 record at home, and, of course, won the championship. May, who covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe, makes a convincing case here for judging the team the best in NBA history, not so much for the talents of its players, which were considerable, but because of the dedication to teamwork and the lack of ego of the players. This careful analysis of the season is also a thorough portrait of each of the team members going back to childhood. Photos not seen by PW.

Whether the 1985-86 Boston Celtics were the greatest NBA team of all time is certainly debatable, but there is little doubt they were the best of a long line of outstanding Celtic squads. May (The Big Three, S. & S., 1994) argues here that although Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Dennis Johnson, and Danny Ainge formed a potent starting five, it was the bench, led by Bill Walton, that lifted the team to championship status. As for the team's place in history, he contends "they played at a time when the competition was never better and the game was not yet contaminated by the ravages of expansion." What was the greatest basketball team ever? Though many sports fans may opt for the team of the moment, many seem to settle on the 1985^-86 Boston Celtics. May, who covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe, re-creates that decade-old season from the point at which the team--fresh off a non-championship season--decided to retool its bench. The frontcourt, with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, was Hall-of-Fame bound, and the Dennis Johnson^-Danny Ainge backcourt was the equal of any in the league. But there was no bench. The best aspect of the book is May's detailed account of the machinations the team went through to rebuild their bench with the acquisitions of Bill Walton and Jerry Sichting. Once the pieces were in place, the Celts blew through the regular season and the playoffs on their way to a league record sixteenth championship. Injuries and age kept the team from recapturing the magic, but for that one season . . . Excellent reading for NBA fans. Wes Lukowsky

THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE AND DOWN TO EARTH BOOK. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT DOES A GOOD JOB GOING THROUGH THIS EXCITING SEASON WITH THE CELTICS LAST CHAMPIONSHIP. IT DOESN'T WASTE TIME AND STAYS ON TARGET ALL THE WAY. A GOOD INSIGHT ON MANY OF THE PLAYERS. ALSO A GOOD BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT HOW SOME TRADES WERE MADE. ABOVE ALL I ENJOYED HOW EACH MEMBER WAS BROUGHT TO THE TEAM AND HOW EACH CONTRIBUTED TO THE ULTIMATE GOAL. A VERY GOOD READ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An incredibly courageous project, and a correct thesis!!!

I consider myself among the top handful of 1980s Celtic votaries, and as a former college basketball player from the 80s and student of the history of the NBA, this book was one of the most thrilling publications to which I have ever been exposed. I have a tape collection that includes about 35 of the 100 playoff and regular season games the 86 Celtics played, and I have maintained for years that this is the greatest team to ever grace a basketball court. After living through so many painful Bulls championsips, capped by that revolting, 72-10 1996 season and all of the associated "Best Ever" pronouncements, I would, and still do, argue to friends and foes alike that the best teams of all-time were situated in the mid-1980s. The very best among the best, I argue, were the 85-86 Boston Celtics. Seeing May's book for the first time was like finding a beautiful resting place amidst a turbulent, seemingly endless sea of hostile waters, which, under this analogy, took the form of publications, paraphernalia, and television broadcasts extolling Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O'Neal, the Chicago Bulls, and the current NBA in all its shocking ineptitude and lack of substance.
The reading is wonderful, and the memories the reading inspires are gratifying, especially when supplemented with the 86 Celtic game tapes I so greatly treasure. In short, May's book brings to life a much better era for the basketball purist, an era whose chief exponents, the 80s Lakers and Celtics, were represented at their pinnacle--by no matter of coincidence, the pinnacle of the sport of basketball itself--by the 85-86 Boston Celtics. Peter May, this is a breakthrough book that needs elaboration: perhaps a more thoroughgoing, analytical piece devoted to comparing the 80s NBA champions to their 90s counterparts, advancing the thesis that the 80s champions were the better teams.
I would like to meet Peter May and express my appreciation to him directly for his wonderful project. I would also like to be! the individual charged with the duty of writing the successor, analytical piece discussed above. A great book about a team for the ages. Thank you, Mr. May.

Fun to relive the great season

Peter May's book about the 1985-86 Celtics is a great way for Celtics fans to experience the franchise's greatest season for a second time.

I was only 9 years old during that basketball season, meaning it was the first Boston sports championship I could really comprehend. I have vivid memories of watching those playoff games with my parents -- the Ralph Sampson fight with Jerry Sichting, the stunning home dominance, Bill Walton's impact off the bench, etc.

But it was great, years later, when I was old enough to fully appreciate what that team had accomplished, to get a view from the inside. May has covered the Celtics for a long time, and he told some great anecdotes while presenting the season in a nice narrative. Because basketball teams only have 12-15 players, I felt like I knew them all when I finished the book.

It's hard for me to say how a casual NBA fan, or a non-Celtics fan, would feel about this book. It's a book about one season and very little else; there are no cultural issues or prolonged looks into NBA history. But readers will learn more than what they got from watching the Celtics that season. It's not a classic by any means, but Celtics fans over the age of 30 would love it, and those under 30 will enjoy getting a closer look at the superstars -- including the original Big Three -- their parents have spoken so highly about for so many years.

About the Author
Paul F. Bradshaw is emeritus professor of liturgy at the University of Notre Dame, an honorary canon of the Diocese of Northern Indiana (Episcopal Church), and a priest-vicar of Westminster Abbey. He has written, cowritten, or edited more than twenty books on the subject of Christian worship, including Reconstructing Early Christian Worship; The Origins of Feasts, Fasts, and Seasons in Early Christianity; and The Eucharistic Liturgies (all from Liturgical Press). A former president of both the North American Academy of Liturgy and the international Societas Liturgica, he was also editor-in-chief of the journal Studia Liturgica from 1987 to 2005.

Informative summary and overview of the key developments

In some aspects this book is a very handy summary of church history, in that it allows one to gain a better understanding of background issues underlying some church conflicts.

Thus, for example, when Arius is in conflict with his bishop Alexander in the fourth century, it is useful to know that a presbyter in Egypt, which Arius was, did not feel his office to be subordinate to that of the bishop and hence was perhaps why he was not willing to back down from his position in deference to "his bishop".

In general I think that Bradshaw represents all sides fairly - particularly in the early period - and I enjoyed his style of writing. Concerning recent developments he really does not engage the various Orthodox churches or those churches who would find little in the Catholic tradition worthy of reforming.

Bradshaw strikes me as very neutral in his discussion and description of developments. I never got the feeling that he is trying to defend some doctrine or development which he favours over another. This is in contrast to some evangelical writers who want to defend the inerrancy of scripture, or some "critical scholars" who are so intent on poking holes in the traditional Christian self understanding that their seeming meta-agenda detracts from the reading of their books.

His discussion of historical developments reflected in various church documents leaves the impression that the New Testament writings would also share this trajectory, i.e. developing over time as sources are reworked which I think that some readers might wish to object to. Also, textual criticism does not enter his discussion in any significant manner that I can remember.

A few more observations: he uses footnotes, there is no bibliography, but there is a five page index, there are a few instances of awkward English usage or missing prepositions in some sentences, and the footnotes are largely accessible to a person only able to work in English though a working knowledge of German, French, and Latin for understanding the meaning of some titles is necessary.

The sharp click of high heels on Champion and Stone’s plank flooring was his first warning that she’d arrived, but Vincent DeLuca knew it was her before he turned to look, before she spoke, before her heavy floral perfume invaded every pore of his skin. He knew because a rush of hot lust swept over him at the exact same moment hairs prickled along his arms and the flesh between his shoulder blades crawled.

Only one woman had ever had such an effect on him.

Vincent stepped back into the main room to face her, since ignoring Claudia Cruz wasn’t an option. Everything about her dominated and demanded, and her sinuous strut kicked him into a sensory overload of breasts and hips straining the seams of a red suit, brassy curls, cinnamon-red lipstick so glossy it looked as if she’d just licked her lips, and cold black eyes that met his almost on the level.

“Special Agent DeLuca.” Even her voice, low and a little raspy, sent mixed signals of sweet and rough. “I knew I’d find you here.”

Here being the wrap-up of his investigation at an art gallery in Philadelphia’s tourist-heavy Old City. He’d unlocked the door a few moments ago to admit a FedEx driver, and she must’ve been outside, watching and waiting for an opportunity to slither inside.

At this point, however, she couldn’t cause any trouble. Or at least no more than usual.

“Not surprising, Ms. Cruz,” Vincent said. “I’m usually at work when I’m working.”

“And hard at work, I’m sure,” she murmured, smiling, then trailed a manicured red fingernail down his tie.

The unexpected touch startled him so much that he didn’t even think to push her hand away. The rest of him responded quickly, though; his belly tensed before her finger had reached halfway to his belt buckle.

Just as he narrowed his eyes, she stepped out of reach, a humorless smile still curving her lips. “Has anyone ever told you that you’re a walking, talking clich�, Mr. FBI Man? Tall, dark, and ever so grim; the black suit and tie; that steely-jawed look, and the stick-up-the-ass posture—it’s all—”

“What are you doing here?” His sharp tone made the detective filling out forms by the cash register glance up.

“As if you have to ask.” Her gaze moved past Vincent’s shoulder to the nearest gallery annex, and she frowned slightly. “Hmmm, is that the manager? It looks like she’s been crying. I hope she’s not having hysterics, because I’m not too handy with hysterical women.”

“That would require compassion, and compassion isn’t high on your boss’s list of job skills when he hires people like you.”

Claudia sent him another slow, maddening smile. “Oh, now, Vincent. You make it sound so . . . ugly.”

Her hair was longer than when he’d first met her four months ago, with the loose corkscrew curls styled in an artful disarray, as if she’d just been fucked on an office conference table.

Vincent squelched that thought—and its accompanying visuals—and moved between Claudia and the others, blocking both the curious detective and the gallery manager. Lowering his voice, he said, “Ugly about covers it. And every time you shove your way in where you don’t belong, I get more determined to take you down.”

“Take me down where?” She feigned innocence. “I’m not that kind of girl, you know.”

“Yank my chain one time too many, Ms. Cruz, and you’ll find out. This is the third time I’ve warned you and your kind to keep clear of my investigations, and it’s the last.”

Something sparked in those dark, assessing eyes, and it wasn’t fear or shame or anything remotely remorseful. “Big talk, no action. Ain’t that just like a Fed?”

For a moment longer, she held his gaze. When he raised a brow and shrugged, she turned her back and headed toward the manager. The detective—a competent, fiftyish man named Matherson who had pale eyes and thinning brown hair—followed the swing of hips in that tight skirt. Vincent couldn’t blame the guy; he’d never managed to look away, either.

After joining Vincent, Matherson leaned over and whispered, “Who the hell is that?”

Vincent didn’t reply, since any answer would require a long explanation. The investigation was over for now, and as fun as it would be to sic Matherson on Claudia Cruz and watch the fur fly, it still wouldn’t be half as entertaining as watching the woman in action.

“Did you hear what I—Vince? You feeling all right?”

Vincent took a deep breath, then ran a hand through his hair, wiping away the perspiration along his upper lip with his sleeve as he did so. “Yeah, I’m good. Just a fever I can’t shake.”

“Maybe you should see a doctor about it,” Matherson said in all seriousness.

“Maybe,” Vincent agreed, holding back a smile.

Against a backdrop of expensive paintings, Arnetta Gallagher stood beside an empty display case off the main entryway, only a fraction calmer than when Vincent had arrived. As Claudia touched her arm Arnetta visibly relaxed, assuming she was in the presence of a sympathetic female, an ally.

People were so gullible.

“I had this cousin once who couldn’t get rid of a cold.” Matherson’s voice broke across Vincent’s thoughts. “And then one day he dropped dead.”

Vincent finally looked away from Claudia. “Thanks for the advice, but this isn’t the kind of fever that’ll kill me.”

Unless a bad case of blue balls suddenly turned fatal. But after four months of dealing with this woman shadowing his thoughts and prowling through his dreams, he doubted the problem could get much worse.

“I hear your day got off to a bad start.” Claudia’s voice was warm with false concern, and Vincent, brows arched, slipped his hands in his pockets and settled back to watch the show.

Arnetta let out a shaky sigh, then dabbed her mascara-smudged eyes. She was a stately, gray-haired woman who’d worked for Champion and Stone for twenty years, and, as she’d repeatedly told Vincent, nothing like this had ever, ever happened to her before.

“I can’t believe this,” Arnetta said. “Nothing like this has ever, ever happened before. It was there last night, and this morning it was gone and that toy left in its place. No alarms, nothing on the cameras—it’s as if they slipped in like ghosts!”

Claudia gave Arnetta another comforting pat on the shoulder of her impeccably tailored tan suit. “I hope it’s not too fragile.”

“Oh, God, the bronze is so very delicate. . . . You can’t cart around something that’s twenty-five hundred years old like it’s part of some Halloween costume. And to make matters worse, it’s the only Corinthian helmet we’ve had in stock for over four years. Ms. Stone is going to be simply furious!”

“It’s hardly your fault,” Claudia said, soothingly. “I’m sure you’ve done nothing wrong.”

She was fishing for information, but carefully enough that Arnetta would never realize it. Claudia had gambled that talking with Vincent first—even playing up their hostile familiarity—would validate her presence.

The gamble paid off: anger, bewilderment, then worry crossed Arnetta’s face before she said, a shade defensively, “I checked over the inventory before I left last night, activated the alarms, and locked up like I always do. I have absolutely no idea how they got inside!”

Claudia’s gaze darted toward Vincent, then away again when she verified he wasn’t making any move to stop her. He had no intention of doing so; he’d had enough experience with this woman, and others like her, to know that he had to pick his battles.

She danced at the very edge of his last nerve, and as much as he wanted to believe he tolerated her intrusions because he was biding his time and waiting for the right moment to strike, it wasn’t his only reason.

“Maybe Mr. DeLuca will find something useful on the security data.” Claudia paused. “Providing he remembered to take the recordings into evidence.”

“Oh, he did. He’s a very thorough young man.”

“I never doubted it,” Claudia said mildly, glancing back at Vincent again and giving a little shrug, as if to say, “Oh, well, I had to ask.”

As if he’d let her walk out the door with evidence. Still, her response—and the faint irritation underlying it—almost made him laugh.

Another fifteen minutes passed as Claudia produced more supportive comments designed to prompt Arnetta to spill her guts. Once Claudia had determined that she’d milked the situation for all it was worth—and that Arnetta would be of no real help—she smoothly disengaged and headed back his way, hips swinging, a small smile curving her mouth again.

At her approach, Vincent asked, “Did you get what you wanted, Ms. Cruz?”

“For the most part, Special Agent DeLuca,” she answered, matching his mocking, exaggerated politeness. “If I need a little something more, though, I’ll be sure to come find you.”

As she headed toward the door, Claudia gave Matherson a polite nod, and the detective frowned. Good instincts: the man knew a carnivorous interloper when he saw one, despite a breathtaking distraction of breasts and hips.

Vincent should’ve just let her walk out the door, but allowing her the last word galled him too much.

“Nice suit there, Ms. Cruz, and I noticed the classy makeup. I thought you people were supposed to downplay your presence.”

Matherson opened his mouth to speak, then snapped it shut at Vincent’s warning glance.

Claudia turned, and if the dig had offended her, it didn’t show. “We people are given a broad range to work with, but the sensitive jobs usually go to the sensible, boring guys like Tiernay.”

Vince rubbed the stubble along his jaw. “That would be the sensible, boring guy who blew up a factory and a couple people outside Boston a few months ago, right?”

“I wouldn’t know anything about that,” Claudia said demurely.

“Of course not.” She’d been there, though. Vincent had checked into the situation—as best he could with the Boston cop who’d dodged his more pointed questions.

“It’s been great talking with you, Mr. FBI Man, but I gotta go. You have a lot of paperwork to do now, right? Me, I’m off to catch a thief, seeing as how I don’t got to deal with all that bureaucratic stuff.”

He’d noticed that whenever she was feeling cocky, the barrio came out more clearly in her voice—and her comeback jab put them at a stalemate. Again.

“Give it your best shot,” Vincent said. “I’ll be watching to see if you can deliver, or if you’re all flash and no substance.”

Suspicion flared, then narrow-eyed annoyance. Then she blew him a kiss and walked out, heels clicking and a little extra swish in those hips.

Heat rolled over him, and he let out his breath, hoping no one noticed he’d been holding it in the first place.

“Who’s that young woman?” Arnetta demanded. “Isn’t she one of your people?”

Vincent imagined her reaction if he told her the truth: “That young woman is the human equivalent of a shark. She works for a soulless sonofabitch who thinks he’s above the law because he’s stinking rich and has powerful friends all around the world. He owns a travel agency that’s just a cover for a bunch of mercenaries who also think they can run roughshod over every law in every country. Only these days they call themselves private contractors, not mercenaries.”

Instead, he said, “Nope.”

“Oh.” She blinked. “Somebody about the insurance, then?”

The woman’s distress and confusion radiated off her in waves, pricking his conscience. His day had been lousy, but hers had been much worse, so why was he being such an ass?

“No. She’s what you might call a freelancer in art theft recovery.”

Arnetta Gallagher wasn’t stupid, and every line of her body stiffened with anger. “Then she shouldn’t have been here. Why did—You should’ve stopped her!”

“From doing what, Ms. Gallagher? Listening to you talk? She never once asked you a question. Technically, she’s not interfering.”

Not enough for him to waste valuable time by causing a situation that would end in another reprimand. He’d discovered the hard way that Cruz might be a handful, but her boss’s lawyers posed far more trouble.

“I’m already going to have to explain to Mr. Champion and Ms. Stone that their prized Greek Corinthian helmet has been stolen from under the noses of a senior employee and one of the best security companies in Philadelphia.” Anger sharpened Arnetta’s soft, refined voice. “I hope you had a very good reason for your actions, and that this woman’s presence won’t cause me any further trouble.”

“It won’t.” Not for Arnetta; for himself, he couldn’t be so sure.

“So why didn’t you stop her at the door?” the gallery manager demanded. “You’re a federal law enforcement agent. You have the authority.”

Matherson’s frown deepened, but he kept his mouth shut.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about. She’s on your side. Solving specialized crimes like this often takes a cooperative effort from many investigators, including those in the private sector.”

It sounded good, big words and all, and more dignified than explaining the FBI sometimes had to deal with the devil it knew in order to catch the devil it didn’t.

Guilt pricked again, and he added gently, “Look, it’s been a rough day for you and we’re done here. You should have a cup of tea or something before locking up. Try to relax. We’ll be in touch if we have any more questions, and we’ll keep you posted if anything turns up. That’s about all we can do right now.”

Arnetta nodded, then reluctantly moved away, still looking a bit lost and frantic. Vincent supposed that if he’d had a chunk of bronze worth nearly two hundred grand disappear on his watch, he’d be a little green around the edges, too.

Once Arnetta was out of earshot, Matherson cleared his throat. “Okay, I’m not sure what just happened here, but that hot little number in red wasn’t someone you know?”

“I know her.”

The detective shot him a look of exasperation. “But she wasn’t authorized personnel.”

Matherson had no reason to know about Avalon, Claudia’s employer, and he was better off remaining ignorant. People who knew too much occasionally ended up dead. Or simply disappeared. “Somebody’s contracted her services. That’s all the authorization she needs.”

“So she’s like a private investigator?”

“You could call it that.”

Annoyance flaring, Matherson asked, “So why did you really let her walk in here and do whatever the fuck she wanted?”

Vincent shrugged. “Because I’ve got nothing to work with. She’s not one of us, so she doesn’t have to operate like us. Maybe she’ll get lucky—and when she does, I will.”

“Ah-hah.” Matherson drew out the word, nodding in understanding. “You’re tailing her.”

“There’s no place her sweet ass goes that I don’t hear about it. So that’s the plan.”

Or half of it; the other half was that he wanted to catch this woman in an illegal act—anything would do, no matter how petty—so he could make an example out of her. That high-handed bastard in Seattle needed to learn an important lesson: no one was above the law, not even the obscenely rich and powerful.

Next to catching this annoying little shit of a thief he’d been chasing up and down the East Coast for months, there was nothing Vincent wanted more than a chance—just one chance—to show Avalon they could no longer ignore the FBI.

Her floral scent still lingered, bringing to mind warm skin and lush female curves, a mouth in wet red lipstick and hair he could grab in both fists.

He blocked the image. Nope, there was nothing more that he wanted. And if he repeated it often enough, he might even start believing it.

Book two in the Avalon series

Former Dallas police officer Claudia Cruz has gained a bad rap. She shot and killed an unarmed rapist. Claudia is now part of an elite organization known as Avalon. It is composed of skilled individuals including mercenaries whose mission is to recover stolen artwork.

FBI agent Vincent DeLuca is teamed up with Claudia. Vincent doesn't trust Claudia. In fact he even has her locked up. If Vincent wants to play games...Two can play. Claudia has a few tricks up her sleeves. Things quickly heat up between Claudia and Vincent.

Her Last Chance is book two in the Avalon series. It can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone novel. The zinging banter between Claudia and Vincent was good four play leading up to some really hot sex scenes. I thought that the romance involving Claudia and Vincent was balanced out really nicely with the rest of the story. Because there was such good dynamics with Claudia and Vincent and the story line was appealing, it made reading this book a breeze. Make this your chance to try Her Last Chance by Michele Albert.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Claudia Cruz used to be a Dallas police officer, until she shot and killed a rapist. Wanting a career change, she takes a position with Avalon, an elite organization of mercenaries who recover stolen art.

Vincent DeLuca works for the FBI, but also with an organization that recovers stolen art. When he and Claudia end up working the same case, Vincent is determined that the FBI won't be thwarted by the Avalon team.

Claudia doesn't mind using her wiles to get what she wants, but Vincent gives as good as he gets. The heat sizzles between the two, and they soon find themselves closer than they ever thought. Are they willing to put their hearts on the line?

Her Last Chance is a romantic mystery with great characters and dialogue. There are some laugh-out-loud moments as well as some hot and sizzling interludes. Hot! Hot! Hot! Michele Albert pens a passionate and suspenseful tale that romance lovers are sure to enjoy.

HER LAST CHANCE by Michele Albert is a romance/suspense story set in Philadephia. It is book two in the Avalon series but can be read as a stand alone. It is well written with depth and detail. It is fast paced and a page turner. It has sweet sensuality, romance, suspense, mystery and intrigue. The main characters are strong and witty, one is an FBI agent with an elite group formed to help retrieve stolen artwork. The other is a mercenary type agent hired by an elite group who also helps in retrieving stolen artwork. They make a amazing team although at first they are at odds, but then things heat up between them. The secondary characters help keep the story moving. There are more than one story going on, This is a must read. I would recommend this book especially if you enjoy mystery, romance, sparks flying everywhere and a really good read. This book was received for review.

About the Author
Mary Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. In 1998, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2002, she won the Tony Award for Best Director. She has adapted-directed Metamorphoses, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, Eleven Rooms of Proust, and Journey to the West. Mostly recently she directed and wrote the libretto for Galileo Galilee, the new opera by Philip Glass, which premiered at the Goodman Theatre.

An excellent piece for educational theatre

I am a theatre teacher and have read several (read around 100) plays looking for a play that 1)has several significant female roles, 2) has literary merit, 3)has a story with some heart 4)has humor and 5)will stretch my actors in ways they have not worked before. Mary Zimmerman's THE ARABIAN NIGHTS has all that and more. It really is a fantastic piece built around the tale of The Arabian Nights but using stories that are not overtold. Every time I read this script I discover more and more to it. Although it has some clever notes from the original production of this play, there is PLENTY of room for new creation including an improvisational idea for a portion of the script and an allusion to modern day Iraq at the end of the play. I hope we are able to secure the rights to do this show because I am looking forward to directing this play with my students. Even if you don't produce the play, it is well worth reading.

The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmerman

Mary Zimmerman is the writer and director of the stage play The Arabian Nights: A Play. Her creative technique is to deeply research a subject, often ancient writings or even drawings, and then to work collaboratively with her cast and designers to find the best ways to dramatize the material, creating a scrip as she moves along.

She was awarded a genius grant and well deserves it.

The resultant play, in this case, is poetic, beautiful, surprising and altogether wonderful.

A Jewel For Senses, If Only It Could Last 1000 Nights

The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmer was one of those life's moments, that truly amazed me and opened my perception of live performance. Performed by the Manhatten Theatre Company in Mud-Town New York, the evening was a tapestry of sight and a delicacy of sound, for the author'a words were scintillating. This should be a modern classic, a precursor to her wonderous Metamorphoses, which I also had the opportunity to see in New York.

Opening and closing with a wedding, this novel is ostensibly the story of a Hindu family trying to find a suitable husband for their younger daughter, Lata. Who will the suitable boy turn out to be? The dashing Kabir, with whom Lata falls in love? The ambitious businessman whom Lata's mother favors? Or the sophisticated poet her relatives choose? The interwoven stories of four families linked by marriage form the background for this marital quest. It proves slow-moving at first, but the patient reader will inevitably be caught up in the compelling rhythms of a richly complex tale. The setting--India in the 1950s--is vividly realized: the enormity of the subcontinent, its overpowering heat, lush gardens, colorful festivals, and exotic foods. Memorable characters abound; not since Dickens has there been such a lively and idiosyncratic cast crowded into one novel. Drama is provided by the simmering conflict between Hindu and Muslim, which breaks out unexpectedly throughout the novel. This is old-fashioned storytelling at its best; highly recommended. Set in newly independent India, Nehru's early 1950's, this adipose saga counterbalances a book of social manners--the marrying off of a well-to-do educated young woman, Lata Mehra--with a historical account (even at the level of transcribed parliamentary debate) of the subcontinent trying to find its societal bearings vis-…-vis language, religion, and the redistribution of estate-lands taken off the hands of the elite. Set mainly in Brahmpur, the story encompasses four well-off families, with a focus mostly on the younger members--poets, academics, playboys, newlyweds--who stitch a pattern of peccadillo through their elders' expectations. Meanwhile, Seth, whose California novel in verse, The Golden Gate (1986), was clever and energetic in concept but dull and soapy in final effect, falls into the same trap here: lots of stuff obviously--at a marathon 1300-plus pages--but characters made out of clich‚, with background-India the very stuffed pillow of local color that keeps them standing. The book, too, fairly squeaks with its own pleasure in itself, larded with poetry and a general recommendation of art over politics and money: the characters it spends the most time over are narcissists. Anyone wanting to read how a marriageable daughter can X-ray a whole society ought to let this cream-puff-wrapped-in-a-cinder-block pass and return to Tanizaki's classic Japanese masterpiece, The Makioka Sisters. Like Jane Austen in its quality, sharp-eyed social satire, and focus on the business of finding a suitable match. Wonderful!

This is a long book (1500 pages), and I approached it thinking I would put it down after 100 pages or so. But to my surprise I was plunged into the world of these four families and I carried this VERY heavy book with me everywhere (including to China). Others have compared the book to Dickens, but I kept thinking of Jane Austen (who is mentioned at one point in the novel). As in Austen, the business of getting married is central to the book, and the juxtaposition of being suitable in terms of money, class, and romance is central. But A Suitable Boy is also like Austen in the sharp-eyed social satire that appears time and again. Many scenes unfold with wit and surprise. Academics, social climbing and over-sentimental mothers, effete sophisticates who have little notion of how they would get on in the world without family money yet are quick to criticize those who make their way on their own, grasping, selfish, shallow young wives -- all come under Vikram Seth's microscope. I loved this book. My wife looked at me dubiously as I brought it with me everywhere and declared she would not read such a long tome, then found that she too was carrying it everywhere because she wanted to read more and more about these fascinating families. Read it!

A richly rewarding read

I absolutely cannot say enough about this book. If first read it about five years ago, and, as I'm sure you will be, I approached it as a little bit of a challenge. As many people have commented, this book is so long its almost hard to hold, but as I got to the last few hundred pages, I kept wishing that there would be more and more and more. I never wanted to stop reading it. I read a lot of novels in a year, but very few have stuck with me the way this one has. Just say the words "A Suitable Boy" and I am transported back into the lives of the main characters, and I still get emotional over the choice the Lata makes.

Many reviewers have also commented about how this is a sprawling family drama, which almost doesn't do justice to the way you, the reader, infiltrate these characters' lives, and that you learn an awful lot about Indian history. That is very true, and in fact, I think I know more about 1950's India, and Indian history in general, from reading this book than I do from a class I took in college on the subject, but A Suitable Boy isn't a history book. Seth doesn't wonder away from the story for a not-so-brief lecture on the history of land rights in India, he weaves these social and political concerns so effortlessly into the backdrop of this story that you're almost surprised in the end by how much you've learned.

So if you're on the fence, not really sure if it's too long, or too dense, or if you're not a history or Indian culture buff, stop worrying. This book has something for absolutely everyone, and will make you love each and every one of the characters. From the moment Lata's mother declares she intends to find a husband for her daughter, to the very last page, you will be completely enthralled by this world.

Loved this, loved this, loved this!!!!

It took me months to read it because I have the probably odd habit of reading different books at the same time in different places in the house. This was my read-while-eating-if-eating-by-myself tome. Like in a Russian novel, at first it is hard to keep track of who all the characters were and thank heavens the author included a family tree at the beginning for the reader to consult, which I had to do at first. After a while, I knew who everyone was. As good authors do, he gave everyone equal importance (I notice this about TV series that I especially enjoy too, like Mad Men) so that the prolific letter writing of Lata's mother gets the same serious (with some dry humor tossed in) attention as the struggles and antics of high ranking politicians in 1950s India. Pretty much every character was lovable in his/her own way (with some exceptions) and you end up rooting for them all, even if their interests clash. A masterpiece, Mr. Seth! Please write another one for me!

Eric Shiraev is a professor, researcher, and author. He took his academic degrees at St. Petersburg University in Russia and completed a post-doctoral program in the United States at UCLA. He served at various positions at St. Petersburg University, NVCC, Oregon State University, George Washington University, and George Mason University. His research interests are diverse. He is an author, co-author, and co-editor of twelve books and numerous publications in the fields of global studies, history of science, cross-cultural studies, and political psychology. In his publications, he develops a distinct multi-disciplinary approach to analyze human behavior. Dr. David A. Levy has extensive experience as a teacher, therapist, writer, and researcher. He is Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where he has been teaching graduate courses since 1986. He received his B.A. degree in theater arts from UCLA, a M.A. degree in psychology from Pepperdine University, a second M.A. degree in psychology from UCLA, and his Ph.D. in psychology from UCLA, where he specialized in social psychology, with minors in psychological assessment and personality psychology. He served as Visiting Professor of Psychology in the Soviet Union, where he delivered lectures and workshops in psychology and psychotherapy at Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University, the Leningrad Academy of Science, and the Bekhterev Psychoneurological Institute. He was honored as a Harriet and Charles Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Pepperdine, and was a recipient of the Shepard Ivory Franz Distinguished Teaching Award and Charles F. Scott Fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Levy holds professional licenses both in psychology and in marriage and family therapy. He has worked in a wide range of private practice and inpatient psychiatric settings, he has supervised clinical interns, and he has utilized his expertise in psychological testing (particularly the MMPI) in forensic cases.

����His numerous theoretical and empirical research studies have been published in scientific journals and presented at professional conferences. His book, "Tools of Critical Thinking: Metathoughts for Psychology," garnered widespread acclaim in both academic and clinical settings for its innovative approaches to improving thinking skills. Levy co-authored (with Eric Shiraev) "Cross-Cultural Psychology: Critical Thinking and Contemporary Applications," which became an internationally best-selling textbook. Levy is the author of "Family Therapy: History, Theory, and Practice," which was the first textbook on the topic available to Russian readers. His Levy Optimism-Pessimism Scale (LOPS) has been utilized internationally in a variety of research contexts, and he is a member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of Humanistic Psychology.

Invaluable textbook for cross-cultural psychology instructors

This text has become an invaluable tool for the courses I teach in cross-cultural psychology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although many books purport to emphasize the integration of critical thinking skills with cross-cultural psychology, this is the only one that does so successfully. My students consistently rate it favorably, and I give it my highest recommendation.

Wow, I read this book and then immediately bought one for my sister who is majoring in Psych. This is a great book for anyone (student or otherwise) who is interested in examining the concepts of cross-cultural psychology, its research methods, and how effects of culture influences behavior, development and disorders. This book is easy to comprehend and the exercises are very insightful. Psych books can be dry...this one is very engaging and entertaining!

As I Closed The Back Cover, I Closed My Eyes And Said A Silent Thanks For A Tale Well Told

Once, long ago, there was a time when books could rise through the ranks of their peers to stand as timeless classics that needed only their title and author as an introduction. GRAPES OF WRATH, CATCHER IN THE RYE, THE SOUND AND THE FURY, MOBY DICK, LITTLE WOMEN, A TALE OF TWO CITIES, all of these monoliths will ever need is their reputation to proceed them. Those days are gone, my friends. In bookstores of today the shelves are lined with so-called classics that only need a stamp of approval from Oprah's Book Club (which usually requires a certain amount of sap oozing from the material) to gain attention. Fleeting attention, I should say, since the self-life of fame is short in the written world these days. And in the flood of ready-made popularity, true, timeless gems are swept away into the shoals of obscurity. Such is the case with SALT. When I found a copy of it sitting on the shelf of a local bookstore, I was intrigued by the unlikely cover, and so, ignoring the ancient warning, judged it to be a worth while expenditure. And this time, I was right to have done so.

The tale begins not with an introduction to the narrator, as one would expect, but on the windswept flats of Norfolk, England. The year is 1945, the "Good War" was almost over, and being incapacitated on the shores of enemy soil is one place a young German soldier would not wish to find himself. But there he is, sunk neck-deep in a salt marsh, at the mercy of a strange young woman who happens to be passing by. Without a second thought given to wartime etiquette, Goose, as we learn the girl is called, fishes "Hands," as she mistakenly calls him, from the grip of the marsh, takes him home, cleans him up, and cooks him a meal. And so Hands stays, at least until Goose, nine months later, goes into labor with the child they conceived. At this point, Hands vanishes out to sea on a makeshift boat, leaving Goose to deliver the child alone.

We are then privy to the tale of Goose and Hands daughter, Lil' whose strange upbringing causes her to be something of an enticing mystery to a pair of brothers with the unlikely monikers of "Shrimp" and "Kipper." This attention eventually sees her off the marsh in disgrace at age 16, with the younger of the brothers at her side. She and her young, almost-husband, move inland to start a different life together. At last, ninety-two pages in, we meet our strange narrator: Pip. A child born without a cry, much to his parent's dismay, and who, from his first moments out of the womb on, never utters a word. Pip communicates with the outside world by means of a notebook that always hangs about his neck, but we lucky ones are allowed a look inside Pip's head, which is a strange place indeed. He tells his tale in an almost non-linear fashion, alluding to future events as though they have already happened and describing his dreams and fantasies as though they were really happening, only to snap back to reality several pages later. Through his few lucid moments we begin to understand that the pain and suffering that spans generations has compounded to produce young Pip, a walking manifestation of his mother's and grandmother's shadows who is, at the same time, very much his own soul. So, it is through the eyes of a boy who may or may not be mad that we see this tale unfold against the haunting backdrop of the Norfolk salt marshes, a landscape that begins to become a character in and of itself, both sinister and breathtakingly lovely.

SALT is a difficult read, but one that calls upon the reader to rise the challenge, and dive head first into Mr. Page's lace-like prose. Whether or not the world may herald this tome as a classic or not, my copy sits firmly beside Hemingway and Steinbeck, never to budge. Bravo.

Hidden Gem

I found this to be an amazing debut written with the confidence as old and weathered as the setting. Page creates a world that is seductive, darkly sweet in landscape and story perpetually damp and dreary.

Too Deep for its Own Good

After reading the jacket cover, I was excited about this interesting historical fiction. I thought it would not be run-of-the-mill story, which it was. However, the author decided to be "deep." And by deep, I mean vague. I think I missed half of the plot because the author was so busy discussing the events in metaphorical terms and saying what happened by not saying it that he never actually tells the reader what happened. It was extremely frustrating, because overall the story idea was good.

Unfortunately, a good plot idea doesn't go far if the author doesn't convey it. This book was so "deep" and "meaningful" that it was just vague and confusing.
