Praised by teachers for many years, this format is now easier to manage. Passages are carefully controlled to use only vocabulary and syntax already taught and tested. Reading-skills instruction and translation help prepare students for second-year Latin. Twenty lessons formerly in Level I are now at the beginning of Level II, thereby providing better overall pacing.

A great Latin textbook
By A. Delgado
I have used this textbook when I was taking the first two courses of Latin in my undergraduate career in college. I can fairly say that this textbook has greatly regaled me with my Latin studies with how the book has been structured with five sections. The five sections are as follows: Forms (the way words are spelled), Syntax (how words are used in sentences), Vocabulary (a list of vocabulary), Practice (exercises to put what you learned to a good use), and last but not least, Reading (where you have the chance to translate a short passage/story). This structure enables the reader/student to easily build on what they have learned. The Reading section is where reader/student can understand much of the Latin language of how to read/interpret and how to write in Latin. Latin is a heavy inflected language with 5 declensions and 4 conjugations. There are a lot of endings to internalize in your memory but fortunately, the book makes it a lot easier to understand the inflections by giving a lot of examples and how it is displayed in tables along with fonts and whatnot. If you have purchased a workbook along with this book such as this one First Year Latin Workbook, you will get the most out of Latin by being able to have access to a wide variety of exercises. I have read the new popular kind of Latin textbooks such as Wheelock's Latin Wheelock's Latin (Wheelock's Latin), but I don't like their format/structure as it is not as appealing as the Jenney's First Year Latin textbook with the fact that I am a visual learner. So with the reasons stated above, that's why I think you should purchase the book if you want to be able to enjoy learning Latin and be serious about it as well.

Best possible introduction to Latin
By Dawn Helene
The basics, presented in a logical, easy-to-follow fashion. Do all the exercises and you can't fail to learn the language. Pair it with the matching workbook, and you'll be even more solid. Have fun!

By A Customer
I have taught beginning Latin from several texts--Ecce Romani, the Oxford Latin Course, the 1990 edition of Jenney's Latin featured here, as well as the older (1979 and earlier) editions of Jenney's Latin. I can say with all confidence and experience that the newer edition (1990) fails in many areas of instruction. In an attempt to modernize itself, the Jenney series lost much of what made earlier editions great, namely its clarity and focused, appropriately challenging readings.
In this 1990 edition, the readings have been changed and often lengthened--no doubt in an attempt to guise itself as a quasi-reading method text. Unfortunately, the new readings rarely adequately enforce the grammar taught in the unit, and offer instead syntactical oddities that only baffle and frustrate even the most earnest students. The book does a good job of including photos of real antiquities, but does so often without context and in excessive detail. As thrilling as it must be for for the average high school freshman to learn the difference between statumen, rudus, and pavimentum (p. 251), it might interest him/her more to spend more time on the cultural/historical context of Roman roads (i.e., their *application*). Such details about the roads' layers would be unknown to many non-specialist Ph.Ds. We wish to emphasize LEARNING, but we want also to emphasize the thematic application of knowledge--not merely the acquisition of facts without context.
Indeed, students might LEARN Latin better if presented with a concise, yet still challenging, version of the Aeneas story (as in earlier editions), gaining confidence as they reinforce their abilities to READ Latin and are introduced to cultural topics.
Again, I have used earlier editions (1979 and previous) of the Jenney text and found them to be much more enjoyable for both teacher and student. They are no less challenging, but leave off much of the junk that many who praise the 1990 edition frequently decry in other textbooks. I would wholeheartedly recommend looking at these versions if you are considering changing texts. Consider also Ecce Romani and Oxford Latin, which are not without fault, but whose approach is consistent with their philosophy.

Excellent book, and very useful tips...
By Rai Chowdhary
If you have ever considered designing, or creating a product - you must read this book. It has dozens and dozens of ideas - from nature and man made products / designs that can accomplish everthing - expanding, contracting, flexing, joining, containing...you name it.

Nature has a lot to teach us, and you will discover how its creatures use their intelligence to make things work (and adapt) over millenia. One simple example is how a bird uses its wings for multiple purposes - for ascending during flight, as brakes while coming to land on a branch, spreading them as a scare tactic to appear larger than it really is, shelter it's young, etc.

Then, you can let your creativity run loose - combining ideas to create designs which use more than one paradigm in the book. If you really get into it, you will find yourself creating some crazy things - ones that have never been done before, and have the potential to make a difference in the world!

Read, enjoy, invent, and go for it with some cool designs...

Design Paradigms/creative process
By Majik Hudson
This book is very interesting collection of design paradigms that can be used for problem solving in several areas including product/Industrial design. What I can appreciate about the book is its perspective on seeing existing functions as possible design paradigms themselves. Otherwise I think it's a great reference for problem solving for form and function.

Design is everywhere
By J. Resnick
This book is an exciting exploration of universal principles (paradigms) of form and design. Warren Wake identifies the design fundamentals common to such diverse areas as architecture and insects, industrial design and weather patterns. The book is organized around big questions in design, like how two objects can be joined, and how an object can change size. Within each category or chapter, the author takes us through the many ingenious solutions to these fundamental problems, wherever the solutions may be. One moment we're looking at how an armadillo can roll into a ball, then we're seeing how this can be applied to metal construction to bend and change the form of rigid materials. We see the structure of a Swiss Army Knife and then how the principle can be applied to clothing design. The bottom-line message is that "Design is Everywhere," and this book is as good a guide to this view of the world as you'll find. It should be required reading for persons interested in industrial design or architecture, and should be interesting to anyone interested in how things work.

Mind Change: How Digital Technologies are Leaving Their Mark on Our Brains, by Susan Greenfield

We live in a world unimaginable only decades ago: a domain of backlit screens, instant information, and vibrant experiences that can outcompete dreary reality. Our brave new technologies offer incredible opportunities for work and play. But at what price?

Now renowned neuroscientist Susan Greenfield—known in the United Kingdom for challenging entrenched conventional views—brings together a range of scientific studies, news events, and cultural criticism to create an incisive snapshot of “the global now.” Disputing the assumption that our technologies are harmless tools, Greenfield explores whether incessant exposure to social media sites, search engines, and videogames is capable of rewiring our brains, and whether the minds of people born before and after the advent of the Internet differ.

Stressing the impact on Digital Natives—those who’ve never known a world without the Internet—Greenfield exposes how neuronal networking may be affected by unprecedented bombardments of audiovisual stimuli, how gaming can shape a chemical landscape in the brain similar to that in gambling addicts, how surfing the Net risks placing a premium on information rather than on deep knowledge and understanding, and how excessive use of social networking sites limits the maturation of empathy and identity.

But Mind Change also delves into the potential benefits of our digital lifestyle. Sifting through the cocktail of not only threat but opportunity these technologies afford, Greenfield explores how gaming enhances vision and motor control, how touch tablets aid students with developmental disabilities, and how political “clicktivism” foments positive change.

In a world where adults spend ten hours a day online, and where tablets are the common means by which children learn and play, Mind Change reveals as never before the complex physiological, social, and cultural ramifications of living in the digital age. A book that will be to the Internet what An Inconvenient Truth was to global warming, Mind Change is provocative, alarming, and a call to action to ensure a future in which technology fosters—not frustrates—deep thinking, creativity, and true fulfillment.

Praise for Mind Change

“Greenfield’s focus is on bringing to light the implications of Internet-induced ‘mind change’—as comparably multifaceted as the issue of climate change, she argues, and just as important.”—Chicago Tribune

“Mind Change is exceedingly well organized and hits the right balance between academic and provocative.”—Booklist

“[A] challenging, stimulating perspective from an informed neuroscientist on a complex, fast-moving, hugely consequential field.”—Kirkus Reviews

“[Greenfield] is not just an engaging communicator but a thoughtful, responsible scientist, and the arguments she makes are well-supported and persuasive.”—Mail on Sunday

“Greenfield’s admirable goal to prove an empirical basis for discussion is . . . an important one.”—Financial Times

Review
“In Mind Change, neuroscientist, entrepreneur and British politician Susan Greenfield argues that our technologies are not only addictive—they are an existential threat. The brain, she writes, has an ‘evolutionary mandate to adapt to its environment,’ and the digital world is changing at too rapid a pace for individuals or government regulations to keep up. . . . Greenfield’s application of the mismatch between human and machine to the brain introduces an important variation on this pervasive view of technology. . . . She has rare talent for explaining science in accessible prose.”—The Washington Post

“How many of us work with six tabs open on a browser, a smartphone within reach and maybe another screen or two nearby? How often does ‘I’ll just look that up real quick’ lead to several hours of indeterminate Googling? Or an impulsive peek at social media turn into a headlong tumble down some cyber rabbit hole? . . . Greenfield’s focus is on bringing to light the implications of Internet-induced ‘mind change’—as comparably multifaceted as the issue of climate change, she argues, and just as important.”—Chicago Tribune

“Mind Change is exceedingly well organized and hits the right balance between academic and provocative. There is no question about the need for us to think more deeply about this topic.”—Booklist

“[A] challenging, stimulating perspective from an informed neuroscientist on a complex, fast-moving, hugely consequential field . . . Greenfield raises questions with startling implications.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Greenfield’s Mind Change . . . proposes that global climate change can serve as a useful metaphor for how human minds—our inner environments—are, in her view, being recklessly altered by digital technologies. . . . Mind Change is an important presentation of an uncomfortable minority position.”—Jaron Lanier, Nature

“Greenfield is a lucid and thorough communicator, and this book is highly accessible to those with no knowledge of neuroscience. . . . That I kept being distracted from my reading to check Facebook was less a reflection on the quality of the book than a sobering lesson in how relevant these issues are.”—The Independent

“Susan Greenfield has produced a gem of a book—written with both verve and impressive clarity—warning not of the obvious dangers like a loss of privacy, but of what technology might do to our brains and social relations, to how we learn and teach, to the narcissism exemplified by ‘selfies.’ While the author is a scholar, she is never obscure. Nor is she a Luddite, hitting readers over the head with a certitude about our dour future. Rather, she adds a fresh voice, vividly connecting the dots to reveal that ‘mind change,’ as she calls it, is as vital to grapple with as climate change.”—Ken Auletta, author of Googled: The End of the World As We Know It

“This is just the book we need now as we proceed to absorb fresh digital innovations: a scientific review of their effects on the brain and what they mean for our minds. Neither a naysayer nor an enthusiast, she is a sober, reliable, and engaging voice on screen experience, telling us what happens inside our heads each time we log on, connect, play, and emote.”—Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30)

“Susan Greenfield is the David Suzuki of the digital moment. She is a wise and conscientious scientist intent on waking up a complacent world. While others demur that the jury is still out about the effects of screen time on our minds, Greenfield is emphatic: We are changed in very real ways by our digital lives—and not always for the better. I was thrilled and fascinated to read this brave new work.”—Michael Harris, author of The End of Absence: Reclaiming What We’ve Lost in a World of Constant Connection

Mind Change

A Global Phenomenon

Let’s enter a world unimaginable even a few decades ago, one like no other in human history. It’s a two-dimensional world of only sight and sound, offering instant information, connected identity, and the opportunity for here-and-now experiences so vivid and mesmerizing that they can outcompete the dreary reality around us. It’s a world teeming with so many facts and opinions that there will never be enough time to evaluate and understand even the smallest fraction of them. For an increasing number of its inhabitants, this virtual world can seem more immediate and significant than the smelly, tasty, touchy 3-D counterpart: it’s a place of nagging anxiety or triumphant exhilaration as you are swept along in a social networking swirl of collective consciousness. It’s a parallel world where you can be on the move in the real world, yet always hooked into an alternative time and place. The subsequent transformation of how we might all be living very soon is a vitally important issue, perhaps even the most important issue of our time.1 Why? Because it may be that a daily existence revolving around smartphone, iPad, laptop, and Xbox is radically changing not just our everyday lifestyles but also our identities and even our inner thoughts in unprecedented ways.2 As a neuroscientist, I’m fascinated by the potential effects of a screen-oriented daily existence on how we think and what we feel, and I want to explore how that exquisitely adaptable organ, the brain, may now be reacting to this novel environment, recently dubbed the “digital wildfire.”3

In the developed world, there is now a one in three chance that children will live to 100 years of age.4 Thanks to the advances of biomedicine, we can anticipate longer and healthier lives; thanks to technology, we can foresee an existence increasingly freed from the daily domestic grind that characterized the lives of previous generations. Unlike so much of humanity in the past and still in many nightmare scenarios around the world, we take it as the norm and as our entitlement not to be hungry, cold, in pain, or in constant fear for our lives. Unsurprisingly, therefore, there are many in our society who are convinced that we’re doing just fine, that these digital technologies are not so much a raging wildfire but more of a welcoming hearth at the heart of our current lifestyles. Accordingly, various reassuring arguments are ready at hand to counter reservations and concerns that might otherwise be viewed as exaggerated, even hysterical.

One starting premise is that surely everyone has enough common sense to ensure that we don’t let the new cyberculture hijack daily life wholesale. Surely we are sensible and responsible enough to self-regulate how much time we spend online and to ensure that our children don’t become completely obsessed by the screen. But the argument that we are automatically rational beings does not stand the test of history: when has common sense ever automatically prevailed over easy, profitable, or enjoyable possibilities? Just look at the persistence of hundreds of millions worldwide who still spend money on a habit that caused a hundred million fatalities in the twentieth century and which, if present trends continue, promises up to one billion deaths in this century: smoking.5 Not much common sense at work there.

Then again, the reliability of human nature might work in our favor if only we could assume that our innate genetic makeup leads most of us to do the right thing, regardless of any corrupting external influences. Yet in itself, this idea immediately runs counter to the superlative adaptability of the human brain, which allows us to occupy more ecological niches than any other species on the planet. The Internet was initially created as a way for scientists to contact each other, and this invention spawned phenomena such as 4chan, a collection of message boards where people post images and short text comments, mostly anonymously and with no holds barred.6 This form of self-expression is a new niche to which we may adapt, with consequences as extreme as the medium itself. If it is the hallmark of our species to thrive wherever we find ourselves, then the digital technologies could bring out the worst in human nature rather than being rendered harmless by it.

Another way of dismissing out of hand the concerns that the effects of digital technology may bring is a kind of solipsistic stance in which the screen enthusiast proudly points to his or her own perfectly balanced existence, which combines the pleasures and advantages of cyberculture with life in three dimensions. Yet psychologists have been telling us for many years that such subjective introspection is an unreliable barometer of mental state.7 In any case, it should be obvious enough that just because a single individual may be able to achieve an ideal mix between the virtual and the real, it does not automatically mean that others are capable of exercising similar restraint and sound judgment. And even those individuals who think they’ve got everything just right will often admit in an unguarded moment that “It’s easy to waste a lot of time on Facebook,” that they are “addicted” to Twitter, or that, yes, they do find it hard to concentrate long enough to read a whole newspaper article. In the United Kingdom, the advent of I, an abbreviated version of the national quality paper The Independent, and the introduction on the BBC of the 90 Second News Update stand as testimony to the demands of an ever larger constituency of readers and viewers—not just the younger generation—who have a reduced attention span and are demanding print and broadcast media to match.

Another consolation is the conviction that the next generation will work out just fine, thanks to parents who take control and intervene where necessary. Sadly, this idea has already proved to be a nonstarter. For reasons we shall explore shortly, parents often complain that they cannot control what their offspring do online, and many already despair at their inability to prize their children away from the screen and back into a world of three dimensions.

Marc Prensky, an American technologist, coined the term “Digital Native” for someone defined by his or her perceived outlook and abilities, based on an automatic facility and familiarity with digital technologies.8 By contrast, “Digital Immigrants” are those of us who, according to Prensky, “have adopted many aspects of the technology, but just like those who learn another language later in life, retain an ‘accent’ because we still have one foot in the past.” It is unlikely that anyone reading these words will not have strong views as to which side of the divide he or she belongs and whether the distinction is cause for unalloyed celebration or deep anxiety. Generally speaking, it corresponds to age, although Prensky himself did not pinpoint a specific line of demarcation. The date of birth of the Digital Native seems therefore to be uncertain: we could start as far back as the 1960s, when the term “computer” entered into common parlance, or as late as 1990, for by the time a young Digital Native born then could read and write, email (which started around 1993) would have become an inescapable part of life.

The important distinction is that Digital Natives know no other way of life other than the culture of Internet, laptop, and mobile. They can be freed from the constraints of local mores and hierarchical authority and, as autonomous citizens of the world, will personalize screen-based activities and services while collaborating with, and contributing to, global social networks and information sources.

But a much gloomier portrait of the Digital Native is being painted by pundits such as the British American author Andrew Keen:

MySpace and Facebook are creating a youth culture of digital narcissism; open-source knowledge sharing sites like Wikipedia are undermining the authority of teachers in the classroom; the YouTube generation are more interested in self-expression than in learning about the world; the cacophony of anonymous blogs and user-generated content is deafening today’s youth to the voices of informed experts.9

Then again, perhaps the Digital Native doesn’t actually exist after all. Neil Selwyn, of the Institute of Education in London, argues that the current generation is actually no different from preceding ones: young people are not hardwired to have unprecedented brains.10 Rather, many young people are using technology in a far more sporadic, passive, solitary, and, above all, unspectacular way than the hype of the blogosphere and zealous proponents of cyberculture might have us believe.

Irrespective of whether the digital age has spawned a new type of superbeing or just ordinary humans better adapted to screen life, suffice it to say that, for the moment, parents are most likely to be Digital Immigrants and their children Digital Natives. The former are still learning the enormous potential of these technologies in adulthood, while the latter have known nothing else. This cultural divide often makes it hard for parents to know how best to approach situations that they intuitively perceive to be a problem, such as seemingly excessive time spent on computer-based activities; meanwhile, children may feel misunderstood and impatient with views they regard as inappropriate and outdated for present-day life.

Although reports and surveys have focused largely on the next generation, the concerns I want to flag are not limited to the Digital Native alone. Far from it. But a generational divide has undoubtedly arisen from the vertiginous increase in the pace of ever smarter digital devices and applications. What will be the effects on each generation, and on the relationship between them?

In a 2011 report, Virtual Lives, researchers for the U.K. children’s charity Kidscape assessed the online activities of more than two thousand children between the ages of eleven and eighteen. Just under half of the children questioned said they behaved differently online compared to their normal lives, with many claiming it made them feel more powerful and confident. One explained: “It’s easier to be who you want to be, because nobody knows you and if you don’t like the situation you can just exit and it is over.” Another echoed this sentiment, noting: “You can say anything online. You can talk to people that you don’t normally speak to and you can edit your pictures so you look better. It is as if you are a completely different person.” These findings, the report argues, “suggest that children see cyberspace as detachable from the real world and as a place where they can explore parts of their behavior and personality that they possibly would not show in real life. They seem unable to understand that actions online can have repercussions in the real world.”11 The easy opportunity of alternative identity and the notion that actions don’t have consequences have never previously featured in a child’s development, and they are posing unprecedented questions as to what might be for the best. While the brain is indeed not hardwired to interface effectively with screen technologies, it has evolved to respond with exquisite sensitivity to external influences—to the environment it inhabits. And the digital environment is getting ever more pervasive at an ever younger age. Recently Fischer-Price introduced a potty-training seat complete with an iPad holder,12 presumably to complement an infant lifestyle where the recliner in which the baby may spend many hours is also dominated by a screen.13

This is why the question of the impact of digital technologies is so very important. Hardened captains of industry or slick entrepreneurs will often sidle up to me during the coffee break at corporate events and let their professional mask slip as they recount in despair the obsessional fixation of their teenage son or daughter with the computer. But these anxieties remain unchanneled and unfocused. Where can these troubled parents share their experiences with others on a wider platform and articulate them in a formal and cogent way? At the moment, nowhere. In the following pages, we’ll be looking at many studies on preteens as well as teenagers; unfortunately, there are far fewer studies on adults, perhaps because they are less cohesive and identifiable as a group than a volunteer student body or a captive classroom. But, in any event, it’s important to view the data not as a self-help guide for bringing up kids but rather as a pivotal factor in the bigger picture of society as a whole.

It was a good read, not great. Check it out from the library.

Bought this book after hearing the author on NPR Diane Rehm show. For me, a non-academic, it was a good read, not great. It is a short read with less than 300 pages. The chapters are well organized. The first four were devoted to a general understanding of the author's purpose. The next few I found very interesting discussing drug intervention and cognitive behavioral therapy. The final half discussed many studies, examples and considerations of brain processing of the screen delivery of information. It leaves to the reader the decision of how the impact of technology is to be companioned proactively with learning and living. Some graphics of the brain in the first few chapters would have visually enhanced the read.

Excellent insight into the future of artificial intelligence, possible Alzheimer's/dementia treatments, and the effects of the digital revolution on the human population (not good). Can humans and robots coexist?

Some of the stuff that goes on in the Auburn Street Projects, I'm never gonna do. These projects are like some kind of never-never land, like they never got put on a regular map. Nobody comes around here on purpose. It's as if we all got lost, right in the middle of the city.

Reeve McClain, Jr. -- Junebug -- has decided to skip his birthday. Since ten is the age when boys in the projects are forced to join gangs or are ensnared by drug dealers, Junebug would rather remain nine. Still, he does have a birthday wish: to someday become a ship's captain and sail away. So Junebug comes up with a plan to launch a flotilla, fifty glass bottles containing notes with his wish, in the hope that someone somewhere will help to make his dream come true.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6?Junebug is the story of risks taken and goals achieved by a small nuclear family struggling against a harsh environment. Nearly 10-year-old Reeve McClain, Jr. (Junebug) says, "For my birthday wish I would like to sail a boat." Hardly an ordinary request for a black kid living in the projects of New Haven. Especially since the other big topics on the boy's mind are how to avoid the pressure to join a gang, the sense of abandonment once his 16-year-old friend flees town to escape a drug lord, and ways he can help make his mother's tough life a little easier. The characters are fresh and vivid: self-involved, fast-traveling Aunt Jolita; little sister, Tasha, remarkably sensitive and shy; and Mama, who finally steps off the treadmill of daily survival when her job provides a chance to move away. Junebug himself is quite clear about who he is and where he should be going. Told in the first person, the narrative is immediate and casual, the setting starkly revealed. The book is engaging and suspenseful, with enough scary characters and situations to keep most readers engrossed. The youngster, by the way, gets his wish in the end via a message placed in each of 50 bottles and set to sea. The ultimate message, however, is that change is possible when responsibility is an individual obligation. Mead's writing approaches the power of Walter Dean Myers's novels about inner-city life, but is for a younger audience.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Junebug lives in the projects, taking care of his little sister, Tasha, when his mother works. He avoids the older boys in gangs and dreams of someday becoming a boat captain. Afraid of changing his life, bleak as it is, for something unknown, he hopes his mother won't move the family across town and take the new job she's been offered. However, when his young Aunt Jolita gets too friendly with a bad crowd and begins drawing him in, he realizes that leaving is the family's only hope. Junebug is a compelling, thoughtful narrator whose wishes and determination are balanced by Jolita's absence of dreams and character. The novel is hard-hitting and unleavened by humor, but Junebug's likable personality and the upbeat note at the end will leave readers satisfied. A likely choice for school literature circles. Rave reviews from a fourth grade class!
By Maggie
From Aidan: When I heard about the options for reading groups in our fourth grade class, I automatically knew I wanted Junebug for my book. the main idea is about a 10 year old boy who lives in a rough part of new haven.

It's sad in some parts because I know if I were in those situations, I would have a hard time finding the good things in my life. Even though it's quite sad, it also makes you happy when something good happens. The writer did a very good job writing and really makes you feel for Junebug. I would give it 1000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars if I could.

Junebug lives in the Northeast ,so he is pretty close to the water and he loves boats. There is slight violence and they do mention a boy who is in a gang and has a gun. There was also a 13-16 year old girl who was really hurt. If you have read Hatchet, you might remember that when the boy lands, he is quite confused and he needs to gather his bearings and he still keeps on going. Well, it's the same with Junebug when something goes wrong, he keeps on going. It's great for 9-11 year old boys and girls.

If you are a kid, it is a great book you should read it !!!!!!!! I hope you will read it.

From Nate: I thought that Junebug was a great book. In some parts, it was sad and at some parts it was happy, but the whole time it was a good book. If I were Junebug, I would do exactly what he did. I think he made the right choices.

I have already recommended this book to one of my friends. I think the age range for this book is probably from 9 to 12 years old. I think it is sad that a boy that age would have to go through so many hard times and take so much responsibility. Junebug's aunt and her friends are bad people, but a lot of people are much worse in this book. I highly recommend reading Junebug. I think that most people that enjoy sad and adventure books would like Junebug. This book has minor violence. I think most people would love this book. I highly recomend reading this and the second book.

From Julian: I think Junebug is a very emotional book. It has both sad and happy parts. It makes you feel lucky that you have a lot more than him and that he has so little compared to you. It has many adventures about Junebug's life and his family and other people.

Junebug doesn't want to go into gang. Unfortunately, when you turn 10 in his neighborhood , others usually force you into one. Junebug stands up to neighborhood gangs and refuses to join them. So he puts messages in bottles sending his birthday wishes out to sea. He sends 50 messages. They each have the same message. Junebug is very interested in boats and water. Junebug lives in Connecticut on Auburn Street in New Haven. Junebug has an aunt and her name is Jolita. She is rude. Junebug has a sister Tasha who is nice and his Mom. I think the beginning just tells you about him, then the middle is all about everything in his life and the end is nice and sad. There are A LOT of gang and drug dealers in his neighborhood. There is a lot of violence in the book in some parts of the book.

The author Alice Mead is a very good author. If there were 100 stars, I would rate it exactly 100. I believe there are two of the Junebug books. Boys and girls, men and women would like this book. Hope you enjoy it!

From David:I think that there are good and bad things about Junebug. Some parts scared me and I think they scared the main character (Junebug), too. Somehow, Junebug always finds something good in a bad thing. What I liked about this book is that there is stuff that happens that really excited me and when we stopped reading, I was wondering what would happen.

If you have read this book than there is a second book if you want to read more about Junebug's life, it is Junebug in Trouble. I would rate it four stars!

From Luke: I think Junebug is one of the best books I have ever read. I truly think you should read it because the main character (Junebug) has a way some around things. If I were in some of the situations that Junebug was in, I would have no clue of what to do.

Junebug always believes in himself and doesn't give up. Junebug is basically in love with boats. He lives in a not so good of an apartment. There is some violence in the book. The place where Junebug lives is not a safe place because the police don't come all the time and same with the firefighters and the ambulance. I go to a way better school than Junebug. There are a lot of guns in this book. In this book they mostly join gangs when they turn 10. Junebug isn't one of those kids that are spoiled and want video games and NERF guns like me. Junebug wants bottles and corks instead.

Junebug is why different then me. He lives in a apartment and I live in a nice home. If you read Junebug I think you will really like it. I have read both books Junebug#1 and the sequel, Junebug in Trouble. Junebug in trouble is the second one. My favorite one is Junebug, but I think you will have to read the first one first because in the second one, it doesn't talk that much about where he lives and all of the good stuff is in book # 1. Five stars!

Five stars!

From Oci: The book Junebug was really sad, but it had a lot of meaning. It's one of those books that really gets to you. I really enjoyed how the author put so many exciting parts in the book. I would recommend Junebug to people who like books that are really emotional. This book has some violence, but it always ends up in a good way. If you read this book and you like it, you should read the sequel called Junebug In Trouble!

In the first chapter of Junebug, I thought I would not like the book, but in the middle of the second chapter, I knew I would love it. Junebug is a amazing book, but I think it is for fourth graders and older because it would be a little hard to understand for younger kids.

Four stars!

From Madalyne: Junebug was a good book because I really like how detailed it was. Junebug was very sad. I enjoyed the book. It was very exciting to see what was next . When I started the book, I was not that excited, but when I got to the second chapter I started to love it. Sadly, there was some violence in the book . If I were Junebug, I would hate it having that rough of a life. Even though it was sad, it was very inspiring because he never let go of his dreams . Although Junebug is a good book, it would be kind of be hard to understand for kids under 4th grade. It really depends on how good of a reader you are. But this is definitely a good book and you should read it .There is also another book called (that is the sequel) Junebug In Trouble. You should read that, too.

Four stars!

Junebug
By Karen Ellwood
Loved the story about a boy living in hostile neighborhood. Pre-teens and teens from inner city identify with characters and situations in story. Junebug holds onto his dream to escape his environment. Nice ending.

Junebug by Alice Mead
By A Customer
The book Junebug is about a kid named Junebug. He lives with his mom, sister, and aunt. Junebug lives in a really nasty and ugly neighborhood. He doesn't really like that because there are a lot of gangbangers and bad people around there.Junebug has an aunt named Jolita, and she likes to hang out with them. Unfortunately she brings a lot of problems to Junebug's family. In the story Junebug has just one true friend named Darnell. The sad thing is that Darnell runs away from all the revolutionary neighborhood.
I like this book because it is a adventure book. I also like how they explain the characters and how they explain all the things that happened in the story.I enjoyed reading this book and I think that the author did a great job. I recommend this book to all the people that like to read entertaining stories.
