He turned instead to Libya for his immediate financial needs, and that was the beginning of both the widening gulf between Britain and Idi Amin, and also the establishment of a new dictator in Africa. He was an uneducated man, but he was deeply cunning and calculating. With his effusive charm and outward affability he was able to disarm his enemies and then catch them unawares. Though he ran his administration with the help of the elite civil servants of the country it was by his animal instincts that he kept himself in power. As internal economic problems grew, he made scapegoats of the Asians of Uganda, blaming them for all the ills of the country. In a masterstroke he succeeded in expelling the Asian community from Uganda in 1972 without any serious repercussions from the West. He wrested away the economy of Uganda from the hands of the Asians and put it into the lap of the Africans of his country, who loved him for this and his other exploits in a way that can only be compared to the way Germans had once loved Hitler.

About the Author
Manzoor Moghal is a well-known writer and commentator in the UK and international news media and a lecturer on a range of subjects, including Uganda, Asians in Britain, race-relations, issues of global terror, the criminal justice system, Islam and Muslim affairs. He was born in Sialkot, Pakistan and grew up in Uganda where he had his early schooling. He returned to Pakistan to complete his education studying at the Foreman Christian College, Lahore, where he graduated with a degree in Sciences from Punjab University. In Uganda he became renowned as an outstanding civic leader, a politician and a leader of the Asian community and had frequent dealings with the highest officials of the Ugandan administration, including Prime Ministers and Presidents. In his various capacities he contributed substantially to the social, community and political life of the country. He was forced to flee Uganda in September 1972 with his family and came to settle in Leicester. Beginning life again in Leicester, he built a new business for his family whilst choosing initially to stay away from civic and political life, greatly disenchanted with the prevalent racism and attitudes he found in Leicester and other British cities. In the early 1980s he began active involvement in public life. His most significant contribution was in the field of race-relations. As Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council's Race-Relations Committee, he and his colleagues changed the face of race-relations in the city and the county, and the period from 1984 to 1997 ushered in an era of harmonious race and community relations which over the years became the envy of the rest of the country. In 2001 he was awarded an M.B.E. in the Queen's Honours List. He is currently Chairman of the Muslim Forum, a think tank organisation.

Refreshing analysis in current historiography

This book successfully combines the art of writing historical narrative with astute political analysis, and the author addresses a number of key issues in Ugandan history. Amin's rise to power, his hostility towards the Asian community and his dealings with the British are just a few of the topics discussed in this book. Manzoor Moghal has produced an original argument, particularly with regard to the legal issues which surrounded the events of 1972 and the way in which the British government chose to 'protect' its Asian citizens after their expulsion. Perhaps most interesting is the author's examination of the delicate Anglo-Ugandan relations of the period and the role played by the post-imperial British government in the unfolding of events in Ugandan politics. Students of history will find this text to be a refreshing commentary on Idi Amin's regime, even more so because it is written by someone who was familiar with the workings of his mind.

Fair coverage of Idi Amin

Given there are few biographies of Idi Amin, my expectations were pretty high for this biography. For the most part, Lion of Africa did not disappoint. Good coverage of certain historical events such as the Asian expulsion. I would have liked to have learned more about Idi's relationship with Libya. Perhaps more about his personal life, although obscure. Strangely, the book lacked any detail/account of some of the tactics used to eliminate adversaries; political or idealogical. A good start as far as learning more about a very important figure in history.

Great read

A very enjoyable and actually quite gripping read. You don't always expect that from biographies and histories, but the touches of memoir brought in from the author's own meetings and dealings with Amin and some of the insights into the time then that they give in the wider human contexts of people trying to get through those times really give the book an added dimension and I was unable to put the book down until I finished it. It does deal with the relevant politics of the time, but this is by no means a book focused on politics. It's focus is the rise and fall of an extraordinary figure that this book is perhaps the first address in a way that goes really far beyond the 'buffoon' characterisations and understands a kind of African bush intelligence that Amin had that was far in excess of what is generally considered of him.

Very good book, very bad index

I had to switch from Subversion to Git practically overnight. After doing some purchases (from Amazon, of course), the conclusion is that this is the best Git book on the market. Very clear; covers not only "how to do this" but also "why to do this this way" and "is there any other way of doing this". Covers all GitHub and BitBucket machinery. Very detailed List of Content, listing all use cases discussed in the book

Why 3 stars only? Well, VERY BAD INDEX. There is no way to find the reference to specific command. When I wanted to find how works and what for is "reset" command, I had to browse half of the book.. Unfortunately, this substantially reduces the usefulness of the book.

Anyway, despite of all problems, book is highly recommended

An introduction to Git through problem-solution example.

I honestly expected something different. I’m somehow disappointed, but not with the author. Rather, with my expectations. The title is certainly misleading. When I first read it, I was expecting something similar to a cookbook, a collection of problems and solutions that assumes that you know already the basics and gets you through the challenges you are likely to face on a daily basis.

I was wrong.

This is instead an introduction to Git disguised as a cookbook like title. The author gets beginners into the magic world of Git in 13 chapters. And, well, he does it pretty much well. He starts with the usual how to install Git chapter, which the most of us just skip, and then goes on to crucial topics like rebasing (chapter 7, which I have particularly loved).

Each subject comes with step by step guides, which are extremely important in a beginner’s guide. Moreover, and this is the coolest, the examples come with many graphs and images, showing the initial, current and expected statuses and how things change while we move through the steps. Really good.

On the other hand, the author uses a massive amount of aliases. This feels wrong. In an introductory guide you wanna see the commands over and over. An alias makes your life easier, but now when you learn.

So, I would suggest this book to anyone new to Git. Intermediate users and gurus won’t find anything useful though.

First of its kind - A true textbook that teaches machine learning with a great balance of math and applications

I am not a machine learning expert. I am not a machine learning novice. But as I am coming to understand a big part of machine learning is really all about curve fitting - and, as an engineer involved with scientific computing, I do know something about that. I have been interested in machine learning for the past year or so and wanting to educate myself to see if it can use it in my job I have been searching for just the right book. Many of the books that are out there seem to be too simply e.g. not enough math. Others are too mathematical and don't explain with words well enough. Others intimately combine ML with programming (usually in Python) to the point whether you learn neither ML or programming. This book "Machine Learning Refined" is different. It seems to be the first book I have found that is rigorous from the beginning (Chapter 2) after a clear introduction and motivation in Chapter 1. The mathematics are not very high level nor are they simplified too much. They are presented at just the right level to be useful. I have breezed through the first few chapters (I usually give up after Chapter 1 or beginning of Chapter 2 in these "new" subjects) and found them crystal clear with great illustrations (even in the Kindle version). Another impressive feature that I have not had time to dive into yet is the extensive end of the chapter exercises. These look like they were assembled with tender loving care to be both interesting and useful to demonstrate the chapter materials. I am also anxious to download and try out the code and other resources available at [...]. The price, even for the Kindle edition, is a bit high but the quality you get over the more popular "tech" titles is clearly worth it. If you have a basic math background and an interest in truly learning ML this is the book for you. I highly recommend it.

One of the Best Books on ML

I love this book. As the name suggests, all the essential ML concepts are refined in a sub 300 page book that is self contained. The book's clarity without sacrificing mathematical rigor with tons of end of chapter exercises that reinforce concepts make it a unique book. The support site has exercises in python and matlab and additional ipython notebooks for better understanding. The authors are incredibly responsive and supportive. The clarity and exposition condensed in this book is reminiscent of prof Yaser's Learning from Data, but much more practical. I purchased this book after following the author's free chapters online. Totally worth it.

Used this version of the New Testament daily

I used this version of the New Testament daily and the cover did not stand up too well. Less than a year of use, the fabric was pulling loose from the edges and all the letters on the cover were gone. Content wise, these two versions Gnt/Tgv are good companions although they cannot be compared for equivalency. The size was perfect to carry daily and the point size of the text was easy to read.

I have been on vine since the early days (although I am there quietly). I don't make many vines as it is just awkward for me to see myself on camera. I have enjoyed both books that have been written. I am familiar with most of the Viners involved, and it has been interesting to learn of their life behind the Vine. These books have also introduced me to many Viners I has not otherwise been aware of. Watching Vine, interacting in the comments as well as reading these two books -- I understand the term "vine family". I feel as if I know many and am happy for the success it has brought to some as well as feel the sadness when it becomes too much for people and they leave. Thanks for sharing Viners :)

Fantastic!

The author has done an excellent job presenting the material in this textbook. The use of colored text and invaluable illustrations really make the lessons clear. There is no need to highlight or make side notes (something I often do) because the text is organized so well. The problems at the end of every section make you focus on what the author is trying to convey. By doing these problems religiously organic chemistry is easier to understand and can actually be fun (well, relatively at least).
Note: I recommend getting a really cheap used 4th edition solutions manual to go with the 5th edition book. There are very few differences and it is VERY helpful in terms of understanding where you're going astray with those end-of-section problems. This manual contains helpful explanations, not just answers to problems.
Overall "Organic Chemistry 5th Edition" is one of the best scientific textbooks I have ever seen.

Not my favorite organic chemistry book. According to my professor, this book had lots of mistakes (he didn't pick it for our class, the department did), which made me wary about whether or not I could trust its contents. I started referencing other books for the class.

EXCELLENT BOOK

I'm in my second semester of organic chemistry and really struggled the first semester because my prof doesn't ellaborate on anything,likes to keep lectures generalized, and believes it's best that we learn on our own through the book. The $250 book we had to buy for the class is so wordy and poorly organized. We usually have 7-8 chapters on one exam (about every 3-4 weeks) and some of the chapters are 80-100 pages. When I study things I like the text or my notes I get caught up on the little things if it's not neatly/concisely/clearly written. This book is exactly what I love. It uses many colors to perfectly keep things easily readable. I had read hundreds of reviews (I'm not even kidding) about how wonderful Wade's texts are and how he teaches it as if you were a little kid--it's so true. You seriously cannnot read one of his chapters and not understand. I never use my other text anymore even if I know where the info I'm looking for is at. It is seriously one of the best science textbooks I have ever had because of how it's formated. He also has great examples in it that are useful....like ones that are often on our labs and on quizes/exams. The end of the chapter summaries are the best thing too. He literally sums everything up by writing all of the equations so everything is all on a couple of pages. I've photocopied many of the chapter reviews because they're such a concise and clean form of my notes.

The best book you will find!

I am a designer just getting into the realm of ecommerce, I know how to program websites and have been designing for about 7 years. I thought ecommerce would be simple so I decided to try it but after getting no sales in 4 months I realized I was doing something wrong. So I ended up buying a lot of books on the subject. This is by far the best of them. Not a lot of theory just practical steps and things that make sense. This book showed me that easy and familiar web pages get sales and that you must focus more on the selling process because that is what will increase your sales. I recommend this book to any one starting or having problems with there ecommerce website.

Wish I'd had this book when I started!

I built a successful eCommerce business from scratch - and it was not easy! We made every mistake you can make and just about gave up 10 times. When I see the concise and easy to use tips in this book I see many of the major hard lessons we had to learn along the way spelled out. OH, if only we'd had this when we got started! The pain and money it would have saved to avoid all the pitfalls.

I can safely say that if you are looking to start or grow an eCommerce business, you MUST know these rules and lessons. So, you have a choice. You can learn by floundering around, wasting time and money, or you can simply read and apply what you find in this book.

The right book for starting out! FOR SURE!

I rarely, if ever, bother to write reviews. However, I felt it was called for. I am reading up on understanding how E-commerce works. I have read quite a few different books and this, by far, has been the most informative book. A reviewer mentioned that because this author is from the UK, his references were not good for US. Well, that is so far off base. Matter of fact, it is completely irrelevant. This book helped be get a thorough understanding of E-ccomerce and is going to be a great reference guide going forward! Kudos to the author! Great job!

Liked it, great for intercultural studies

Well, it's a textbook. Written in a beautiful serif font that is easy to read, it's incredibly informative and unbiased. Jackson's work is easy to read, objective, and good for an intercultural studies class. I've had worse books for graduate studies in TESOL, and I'd actually rank this among my top likes for texts. If you are a professor considering this book, go for it.

I do think this book could be pared down slightly. It should be noted that this book ends on 323. The other 90+ pages are references, glossary, and an index.

Excellent and comprehensive text on this interdisciplinary topic

This is an excellent text. I was skeptical at first; but when it arrived in the mail, I was impressed. Jackson has a balanced and knowledgeable perspective between linguistics and anthropology. (Other resources lean toward one field or the other.) It is well organized and user friendly. I found it to be the most comprehensive review of this interdisciplinary topic. I am so happy I found this resource, and I am encouraging my director to use this as the primary text in our language and culture course.

Good book, but could be more interesting

Keming Yang mentioned that "each choice of a research topic or strategy is a choice of what kind of perosn to be", and he chose this one instead of the "comparative democratic development in Russia and China". I guess it might be more fruitful if he did otherwise. A sociology perspective on the entrepreneurship couldn't seem to bridge the gap between "institution-entrepreneurship" and "entrepreneurship-development". Institution hole and double entrepreneurship had been well addressed in the rent-seeking and profit-seeking literatures, not much excitement here.

There are three other problems:
1. the non-comparative nature of the topic took away the author's potential advangage of a cultural perspective;
2. it under-estimates the structural change in China's institutional reform, especially in recent years;
3. the focus on Institution hole and double entrepreneurship blurs the theoretical thrust of the argument of "institution - entrepreneurship - development".

entrepreneurs coping

Yang provides an understanding of what entrepreneurs face in China. A vital topic if China's economy is to continue to grow strongly. He explains how people cope with the business and political situation. The Chinese Communist Party often rules by policy and not by law. Policies are usually more flexible and consistent with some overall political system than a rigid codification of law. Another key advantage is that policies can be easier for ordinary folk to understand; rather than some legalese.

The book also has several case studies of Chinese entrepreneurs. Well, some successful ones, at least. He doesn't really talk much about those who have failed. But this is scarcely any different than all those breezy business books about starting up in the US. Few of those ever chronicle the many American failures. Capitalism does have a downside, in the human toll of these failures, in any country where it is practised.

If you want to understand entrepreneurship in China, read this book

This is the best book that I have read on entrepreneurship in China. Actually, I just happen to read the review on this book by Professor Douglas Guthrie (New York University) published at Contemporary Sociology, which is very positive. In my view, everyone who wants to understand China's amazing economic achievements should read this book; it is not just about entrepreneurship; it is about how different kinds of Chinese people (officials, ordinary people, business owners, of course) behave as well. It is full of insights and conceptual innovations. I don't know whether it will become a classic, but I am pretty sure many people will still find this book useful many years later.
