This Fiddler Plays A Most Beautiful Tune

Ever since I saw the movie "Fiddler on the Roof," I wanted to read the short stories upon which the movie was based. I finally took the plunge, and I'm glad. Probably as interesting as the short stories themselves were the thoughts of the translator and how he worked to maintain the integrity of Aleichem's stories. He mentions that the stories are very different from the musical (and movie), but I could pull out passages that were used word-for-word in the musical. I really think the two go hand-in-hand.
Tevye the Dairyman and The Railroad Stories would be an excellent book to precede a study about the Holocaust. It gives the flavor of Russian Jews living in the Pale Settlement, and the translator's notes explain quite about about the antisemitism of Russia. Students would be able to see the Jews through the eyes of one, poor dairyman and his struggles to deal with life, love, and living according to Jewish law. The translator's notes bumped this book from four stars to five, for me. (less)

Read and Discover the ORIGINAL "Fiddler on the Roof"!

My students, 25 adults and senior adults who read and discuss Jewish stories for pleaure, loved this collection of stories! Sholem Aleichem is the greatest writer of Yidddish stories. This new translation by Hillel Halkin brought all of theTevye (one of Aleichem's greatest creations) stories together in one place. We read and discussed the stories in two six week classes; one on Tevye and one on the Railroad Stories. Having them together gave us opportunity to not only explore the skill of the writer, but also see if these stories still worked for today's audience. Since we are an interfaith group with hardly anyone able to read in the original Yiddish, we could also see if Sholem Aleichem brought his readers into the story, what ever their backgrounds. Aleichem's wonderful descriptions also painted the scenes and the evironment and brought them to life. If you are not familiar with "Fiddler on the Roof" (based on the Teveye stories here) or even if you are, read and discover the "orignal" (through translation) in the outstanding collection!!

The Tevye stories are much better, even, than the musical.

The Tevye stories take up about half this collection, and were, for me, a delight. While the musical gives a hint of Tevye's willingness to accuse God of injustice, it really comes through in the written version. The translator in his introduction, sees Tevye and Job has being willing to accuse God for the unfair world they find themselves in, all the while remaining devout believers. So, if you've bogged down trying to read Job, read Tevye instead.

Not that this is a dreary theological treatise. The original Yiddish writing has a reputation for being quite funny and clever, and I think the translator has performed a minor miracle in being able to make the humor and irony come through in English.

His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. Outliers begins with a provocative look at why certain five-year-old boys enjoy an advantage in ice hockey, and how these advantages accumulate over time. We learn what Bill Gates, the Beatles and Mozart had in common: along with talent and ambition, each enjoyed an unusual opportunity to intensively cultivate a skill that allowed them to rise above their peers. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success—and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts. But who in this day and age believes that a high intelligence quotient in itself promises success? In structuring his book against that assumption, Gladwell has set up a decidedly flimsy straw man. In the end it is the seemingly airtight nature of Gladwell's arguments that works against him. His conclusions are built almost exclusively on the findings of others—sociologists, psychologists, economists, historians—yet he rarely delves into the methodology behind those studies. What explains whether or not Outliers succeeded with a given reviewer? Sometimes, Gladwell's trademark style and wit were sufficient. Many critics noted some anecdotes that did not quite seem coherent, but they commended the book anyway because Gladwell is so entertaining and enthusiastic. Yet Gladwell's talent alone was insufficient to earn reviewers' highest marks. (Indeed, several who focused on this aspect of the book were annoyed that the author seemed to be merely offering common sense with a New Yorker sheen.) The reviewers with whom Gladwell truly succeeded were those who noticed the moral message of his book: if the factors that determine greatness are so much more complicated than individual efforts, our society should provide a nurturing environment where serendipitous coincidences abound and every person has a real chance to succeed.

What Makes Success? A Little Blt of a Lot of Things. (A teacher's review)

In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell seeks to disabuse us of the notion that genius and greatness are predominantly a function of innate ability and IQ. He rightly notes that while IQ is certainly a contributor, it reaches a "point of diminishing returns" after a while: once people score about 130, IQ becomes less important and "intangibles" (my term) become more important.

The book, then, focuses on what these "intangibles" are. Gladwell suggests that things like what income level, culture, and time of a child's birth are important contributors to success, as well as a person's tenacity and agility. As the last of these is the least conventional, think of it this way: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and many other computer masterminds would likely not have distinguiished themselves were they born 10 years earlier (as they would not have been exposed to computers in high-school/college, and would have been in their mid-thirties by the time computers really took hold, likely already in other careers by that point in their lives.)

How does culture matter? Think about the discrepancy between how many days per year American children spend in school (180) versus Asian students (280), and how many more social expectaitons Asian students are borne into? Certianly this will affect academic and other achievement.

Now, I should point out that Gladwell is quite adept at anecdotal story telling and is much less adept at statistical analysis. As such, he could be justly accused of overstating his case (and maybe even finding patterns where he wants to see them, rather than where they exist.) Gladwell is definitely writing for the popular market so anyone wanting good "back up" of his arguments may find themselves disappointed by his cherry-picking of examples.

That said, Gladwell's book contains some interesting and provocative ideas, especially for educators and those concerned with education. His last chapter - about the KIPP schools - is a fascinating plea for American schools to infuse more rigor (and quantity) to the educational school year. As a main part of Gladwell's thesis is that how hard one works (and is willing to work) is endemic to one's likelihood of success, we set students up for failure by not expecting them to work as hard as other countries expect of their students.

For a fun read which introduces some interesting ideas, Gladwell's "Outliers" is a decent book. Those who want a little more scholarly meat may come away disappointed.

A Lot Like Gladwell's Other Books

Gladwell seems to have perfected a formula:
1. Latch onto a catchy concept.
2. Think of a great, catchy one- or two-word title.
3. Write a thin, small book.
4. Start your book with a decent analysis of some facts that support your catchy thesis, hook the reader, then let the book slide into a series of anecdotes and stories. Don't "prove" your thesis, just illustrate it.
5. Charge a lot for it (in both absolute dollars and cost-per-word).
6. Get a terrific, minimalist cover design.
7. Let the royalties and accolades roll in.

Each of Gladwell's three books ("Tipping Point," "Blink," and "Outliers") follows this formula. It's a proven winner, and at the end of this book, he goes into full rooting mode for another hit in his Acknowledgements: "[A colleague] and I have been two for two so far, and...here's hoping we go three for three." Wow. Let's just set up a toll-booth.

I don't agree with the five-star reviews. The book is just too thin, anecdotal, and un-analytical to be taken very seriously. On the cover flap, it says that "Tipping Point" changed the way we understand the world, "Blink" changed the way we think about thinking, and "Outliers" will transform the way we understand success. Uh, no. They are all decent books with provocative theses, but none has enough "there" there to change the way most people think about anything.

I also don't agree with the one-star reviews. Gladwell's topics are provocative, his books are easy reads (this one took me just a few hours on vacation, and I'm not that fast a reader), and the stories and anecdotes are interesting. I found myself pretty convinced that birthdates are important to hockey success (so he hooked me with the first part of the book), but each successive chapter became less fact-based and more story-based. That said, it's a nice easy read, and I learned a thing or two. His books are not worthless.

So I give it a nice easy 88-mph down the middle three stars. I must admit, I admire the success he has had with his formula. He makes it look pretty easy.

Work of Genius

Rarely do I find such great storytelling skill in works of nonfiction. I went chapter after chapter excited with Gladwell's perspective on Outliers. Clearly, he must have spent a great deal of time researching for the book, and I daresay the effort has paid off. I recommend this book to everyone with questions on success, especially the young generation that is preparing for the world ahead.

Exceptional book about benefits of vegetarian diet

This is not your regular 30 pages vegetarian cookbook like many others, this is a full length life changing book. Although my intensive fitness days are over and I am not a vegetarian I found tons of great advice on why vegetarian diet is good for both body builders and regular people. If you are in bodybuilding and thinking of switching to vegetarian diet get this book, it will change your life.

On little note to author: get this book professionally formatted, the value of text is fantastic but editing and formatting need work.

I appreciated that this book takes the time to enlighten the reader on protein myths, & what a natural diet can do for a person in terms of health, physically, spiritually, and mentally. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who feels that their current chicken & broccoli diet is leaving them nutrient deficient, or if they want to feel purely amazing and eat the way people were MEANT to. Two thumbs up this is one of my favorites in a while :)

This intriguing series of conversations between like-minded peers about America in the Middle East pairs dissident intellectual Chomsky with Achcar, who is less well known for critiques of U.S. foreign policy (Clash of Barbarisms). Drawing on deep historical background, they deconstruct Western assumptions about international politics: "Every state you can think of is based on violence, repression... the state system itself has no inherent legitimacy." While refreshingly careful to note when their conclusions aren't backed by rigorous documentation, both make broad assumptions about human behavior, while easily disregarding contradictions. For example they rely on opinion polls to indicate the desires of a given people (as opposed to the ruling elite), but reject the once-broad Palestinian support of the Oslo Peace Accords, for instance, because, as Chomsky says, the Palestinians "were just totally deluded." Similarly, they give little weight to nonrational influences—religiosity, fear—where these almost certainly played a key role in forming public opinion, such as in Arab disillusionment with secular nationalism or Israeli presumptions of anti-Semitism. Particularly in Chomsky's case, this can extend to an unfortunate contempt for those with whom he disagrees. Both men raise vital questions, but some readers may be alienated by the authors' often dismissive manner. (Nov.)

About the Author
Gilbert Achcar, who lived in Lebanon for many years before moving to France, now teaches politics and international relations at the University of Paris. He is the author of several books on contemporary politics and is a frequent contributor to Le Monde Diplomatique.

Noam Chomsky, M.I.T., is the author most recently of 9-11 (a national bestseller) and Middle East Illusions. His articles and books revolutionized the contemporary study of linguistics and his political essays are widely read and translated throughout the world. "Periolous Power: The Middle East and U.S. Foreign Power" records a discussion and dialogue between Noam Chomsky and Gilbert Achcar about current events in the Middle East and the U.S. role in the region. Stephen R. Shalom explains in the Preface that the book is the product of several days of live, interactive discussions moderated by Mr. Shalom followed by review and editing of the transcripts by each participant. Consequently, the finished product has both a dynamic feel to it as Mr. Chomsky and Mr. Achcar interact with each other in interesting and sometimes unpredictable ways; and a scholarly dimension as the authors were provided the opportunity to clarify or expand on their comments after the taped sessions had ended. The end result is an exceptionally interesting, informative and timely analysis of U.S. foreign policy and the Middle East.

Mr. Chomsky and Mr. Achcar agree that U.S. interest in the Middle East primarily pertains to oil and control of the world economy; to that end, Israel is a close ally who allows the U.S. to project its power in the region. Mr. Chomsky insists that the threat of terror does not outweigh the imperative of controlling Middle Eastern oil; therefore, he charges that U.S. policy makers are taking an unnecessary calculated risk when choosing to deploy its military assets to the region. Rather, Mr. Chomsky believes that the threat of terror could be greatly reduced simply by withdrawing U.S. forces from Saudi Arabia, for example. Following a similar line of reasoning, the authors conclude elsewhere in the book that U.S. withdrawal from Iraq is a necessary prerequisite to ending the Sunni insurgency and creating a lasting peace.

The book offers many insights. For example, we learn that Middle Eastern democracy was undermined historically by the U.S. in order to prevent politically Left-leaning states from falling under the influence of the USSR. Today, Islamic fundamentalism fills a void as what little Arab nationalism had once existed has waned. However, the authors recognize that the rise of religious fundamentalism is a worldwide phenomenon that is connected with the ascendancy of neoliberal economics, meaning that U.S. and Israeli politics are negatively influenced by fundamentalists, too. Indeed, the increasingly dysfunctional democracies of the U.S. and Great Britain are cause for concern and cast little doubt that the purported mission of bringing democracy to the Middle East has been little more than a ruse.

In perhaps the strongest part of the book, the Israel-Palestine conflict is dealt with at length. Mr. Achcar argues for inclusive peace talks where the Palestinian diaspora is allowed an opportunity to be represented in the discussion and suggests that Jordan should be part of that state as well; for his part, Mr. Chomsky believes that a single state solution is indicated. The authors go on to talk about many complex and contentious issues, including Israeli settlements in Palestine, the separation wall, U.S. military aid to Israel, Palestinian and Israeli politics, anti-Arab racism in the U.S., and more. Throughout the discussion, the reader is impressed with the author's clear-eyed assessment of the situation; moreover, the vision of what they believe might be achieved through peaceful negotiation gives one hope that their ideas are accorded the merit they deserve.

US terror

Chomsky does not say that the US should "accept" terrorist attacks as another reviewer suggests. Rather, Chomsky says the US should stop engaging in terrorism. The US has spent hundreds of billions of dollars developing weapons of mass destruction, and training all sorts of killers through our military camps and bases all over the world, places like the "School of the Americas" which has turned out some of Latin America's worst tyrants. We have proxy wars, special forces, and private mercenaries operating all over the world in the interests of corporatism. As General Smedley Butler said, war is a racket, and he was a "high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers."

Ann Coulter, Victor Davis Hansen, Hugh Hewitt and so many others very obediently avoid the fact of US violence against other people. They only speak in terms of the threats (blowback) our military superpower faces, never the actual harm it causes around the world. That's the "thought-crime" that Chomsky commits in book after book, he dares to suggest that the people of the US look themselves in the mirror.

Chomsky dares to argue that while much of the charges the U.S. government makes against its foreign enemies regarding human rights violations, involvement in terrorism, etc. are valid, the United States itself is a leading sponsor of human rights violations and terrorism in the world. If the U.S. has the right to bomb Afghanistan for 911 should Venezuela and Cuba be allowed to bomb the United States because Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Cariles are being harbored in the U.S.? Should Sudan bomb the U.S. because Clinton's 1998 bombing destroyed the factory producing the majority of that country's medicine, an action which probably subsequently led to many thousands of deaths? Chomsky argues that the U.S. perhaps could have gotten Bin Laden from the Taliban if it taken seriously the latter's proposals for extradition processes. As before he continues to cite the New York Times articles after 911 reporting the angst of aid agencies about the drastic reduction of food aid deliveries during the U.S. bombing and the fact that the U.S. forced Musharaff to close his border with Afghanistan through which at least five million Afghanis depended to receive food and medicine. He seems reluctant to delve much deeper into the Afghanistan issue. I wish he would, like Michael Mandel in his recent book, quote from London Guardian and New York Times correspondents who cited such figures as 3000 and 20000 for deaths as a result of the cutoff of food aid in particular small areas of Afghanistan each surveyed.

Chomsky quotes former Reagan State Department official Thomas Carothers as explaining that the U.S. pushes for third world democratic governments when it is sure that a country's rich minority will retain real control. Hugo Chavez is the antithesis of this preference. The government of Turkey which is a military dictatorship with a democratic fa�ade was threatened with sanctions by Colin Powell after its parliament complied with the wishes of 85 percent of Turkey's population and refused to participate in the U.S. war on Iraq. The Turkish military should have stepped in to overrule the parliament Paul Wolfowitz declared and ought to be thinking in the future how it could step up and be a team player for the Americans. Suddenly, Chomsky observes, articles started appearing in the U.S. press outlining Turkey's horrendous human rights violations against its Kurdish population in the 90's though never mentioning that Clinton provided the military aid for Turkey to do so.

Achcar is particularly interesting on the internal situation in key Arab countries, including on the meaningless cosmetic reforms that the U.S. backed dictatorships of Egypt and Saudi Arabia engaged in under U.S. pressure. He discusses how Paul Bremer tried to avoid elections throughout 2003, trying instead to impose a weak system of caucuses whose members he would appoint. But the protests led by Sistani forced him to give way to a significant extent.The U.S. gave massive aid to the former Ba'athist thug Alawi but he only got 15 percent of the vote. Subsequently ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad maneuvered with the Kurds to get Allawi's people some key decision making posts in the government. Allawi has since been snipping at the government and blaming it for the torture centers and death squads that were actually formed with the aid of U.S. advisors when he was interim leader. He notes that the Iraqi politicians who met in Egypt in late 2005 including President Jalal Talabani made sure to declare that there was a legitimate resistance to the U.S. occupation.

Chomsky notes that a look at a map of the 2000 Camp David proposal shows that it was fully consistent with Israeli policies since 1967 of stealing all the best Palestinian land and resources and creating settlement blocks that break up the territorial contiguity of the territories and leave Palestinians in isolated ghettos. He notes that a precedent for the recent destabilization of Hamas govt. has roots as reflected in recent documents released from the Eisenhower and Kennedy administration where officials explain that since the Cuban population is favorable towards Castro they would have to be punished by being starved by embargo in order to be induced to overthrow him.

Chomsky and Achcar note how Israel's kidnapping of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians and detaining them without charge and extracting confessions from them with torture has been ignored. He quotes General Shlomo Gazit's memoirs as lamenting that Israel rebuffed a proposal from Palestinian village leaders in the late 60's for some form of political and cultural autonomy. When Sadat proposed an agreement to Israeli in 1971 on terms no different from the Camp David Accords of 1979 Israel sent Arik Sharon into the Sinai to drive tens of thousands of Egyptians from their homes and into barbed wire camps so the all Jewish town of Yamit could be constructed.

Chomsky discusses such matters as -911 conspiracy theories, the nuclear standoff with Iran and the role of Jews in American life. He discusses with Achcar the movement to divest from Israel and expresses reservations about it and suggests how it could be of maximum effectiveness. He argues that the "Jewish" lobby suddenly arose after 1967 and has consisted most importantly of liberals and evangelical Christians who have many purposes, including supporting Israel as a bulwark against Arab nationalists and Islamic fundamentalists who don't follow U.S. orders. He notes that Israel really came up against U.S. imperial interests in 2000 and 2005; Israel wanted to sell advanced military equipment to the Chinese. Israel's weapons industry is a crucial part of its economy but Clinton and Bush said no and the lobby made no protest. In fact in the 05' case Pentagon officials would not meet with Israeli counterparts until the Knesset overturned the sale and the Israelis sent them a letter of abject apology.

I think he gives more than adequate answers in this book to the large number of people on the internet fuming about him being the "left gate-keeper" on 911 and Israel lobby issues.

Washington Post sports reporter Brennan knows all the greats in figure skating?past, present and probably future. So she is superbly qualified to do a book about the sport. And, she counsels, make no mistake: despite all the talk of style and grace, it is nonetheless a competitive sport, but unique in that women are more important than men at the box office and in the officials' offices. Here she follows the season from October 1994 to the Nationals held the following February, concentrating largely on the likely stars of tomorrow. Of course she touches on the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan imbroglio and the arrest of U.S. champ Nicole Bobek on a burglary charge (later dismissed), but she is less interested in scandal than in showing how a year's work and tens of thousands in parental dollars can be lost by a couple of missteps in a single four-minute program. She demonstrates how the homosexuality of many?perhaps most?of the men in the sport is covered up, how quixotic the judging is and how the sport is becoming more like tennis as it attracts younger participants and more high-powered agents. YA?Championship figure skating is not all sequins and spandex. It is hard work and heartbreak, practice and programs. Skaters train rigorously for years, only to have their ultimate success depend upon a four-minute program or even a four-second triple jump. Failure, or even hesitation, at this point often ends a career. Brennan has covered figure-skating for the Washington Post for 11 years. She brings a love of her sport and a crisp, clear writing style to a topic sure to interest many YAs. Loosely structured around the six-month competitive season, the text covers everything from the development of the sport, through changes in the competitive requirements, to the media bonanza that it has become. The author interviews and profiles many skaters, known and forgotten, coaches, parents, and judges along the way. While this is not exactly an expose, it is a hard look at the realities of a sport more applauded for its personalities and their appearances than their athletic excellence. Brennan doesn't flinch from chastising the U.S. Figure Skating Association for attempting to ignore the impact of AIDS on the sport or from discussing the homosexuality of many of the skaters. Easily read and digested, this title should make readers watch these athletes with new understanding and think twice before they commit to the demanding life of a championship figure skater.?Susan H. "Harding Had It All"

Christine Brennan put her Nothwestearn Journalism School education to good use. I was especially moved by the following passage:
"Tonya Harding possessed more raw jumping talent than almost any of them. More than Kerrigan, Oksana Baiul, Michelle Kwan, Nicole Bobek, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi, {or} Sonja Henie. Harding had it all."
I never heard such words applied to Tonya Harding before this book. I also didn't know before this book that Nancy Kerrigan wasn't well liked.
This book clearly shows that talent even unusual talent or skill doesn't compensate for hard work. If Tanya Harding had practiced and stayed in shape, she could have been famous instead of infamous!

Informative AND exciting, this book has it all!!!!

Christine Brennan is an exceptional writer, as this book is proof. As an avid figure skating fan, I expected 'Inside Edge' to be full of skating secrets and inside info, and it delivered. Wonderful tidbits from skating now and then. And the unusual scoring process of this sport was explained in full detail. I've read it twice, and I still want to read it more. Skating fans--this book is a MUST HAVE!!!!

Wonderful book!

My daughter, a figure skating coach, and I are on our 3rd copy: people keep borrowing this book and keeping it!

Brennan does a fine job debunking the "pretty girls in pink" myth about skaters, while still showing respect for the amount of effort and athleticism necessary to succeed in this sport. It's been said that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did - only backwards and in high heels. Well, figure skaters do everything other elite athletes do, backwards/forwards and in the air while maintaining an illusion of fragility. Brennan recognizes that dichotomy, which is why this is such a good book.

If you know skating from the inside, elite or simply local, you will recognize much of what she talks of. If you enjoy politics, read this for incredibly sharp double dealing and backstabbing. But always, read it for the beauty she evokes.
