Duke Ellington, by James Lincoln Collier

Duke Ellington is considered to be one of the great genius' of jazz--its major composer and leader of probably the most significant of all jazz bands. Yet, other than his own not-very-revealing autobiography and a collection of reminiscences of his band members, there has never been an indepth biography of this preeminent figure in twentieth century music and entertainment. Here at last is the definitive critical biography of both the man and his music.
James Lincoln Collier, author of the highly acclaimed Louis Armstrong: An American Genius, has produced a fascinating work which tells the full story of Edward Kennedy Ellington, from his childhood as the pampered and adored only son of a middle-class Washington black family to his death in 1974, hailed as "America's greatest composer" (according to the New York Times obituary) and mourned at his funeral by more than 10,000 people. Collier describes Ellington's charisma--his sense of being special even from childhood, when he would announce to his cousins "I am the grand, noble, Duke; crowds will be running to me,"...the formation of his band, including some of the greatest names in jazz history, among them, Barney Bigard, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Lawrence Brown, and Paul Gonzavles...his arrival at the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem in the 1920s...his involvement with his manager Irving Mills, who manipulated and cheated him and even put his name on some of Ellington's songs, but who made him famous...his relationship with his family, including his troubled relationship with his son, his marriage and many affairs (including involvements with some of his own musician's women).
But most of all, the book is about the creation of the music, from classic songs like "Sophisticated Lady" to the "sacred concerts" of Ellington's last years. Collier maintains that it is not necessary to see Ellington as a "composer" in the narrow sense of the word but as something just as important: an improvising jazz musician. His instrument was a whole band. This is a controversial book--not all will agree with Collier's assessments--but it will enthrall jazz buffs as well as anyone interested in a fascinating life and times.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Louis Armstrong: An American Success Story tells another musical tale with a strong, clear sense of the field. Collier chronicles the early years of Edward Kennedy Ellington, who was pampered and made to feel elite--like his nickname. Although he came to music rather late, Ellington's dignity, willingness to take risks and sense for organization enabled him to assemble and keep together one of music's longest-lasting bands. In language rich with the textures of jazz itself, Collier explains how jazz functions (e.g., through layering), and uses Ellington's personality to demonstrate strengths and weaknesses in his music. Probably appealing most to jazz aficionados, this biography flavorfully examines the period, the possibilities and limitations for blacks, the ebb and flow of band members and Ellington's many contributions--including being partly responsible for ending Stepin Fetchit routines. Readers will easily understand how the youngster who kept "practicing at being famous" became so worthy of that adjective. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-12-- A well-researched, fact-filled biography, beginning with Ellington's early adolescence. Collier describes aspects of the social problems during his subject's younger years as he traces the musician's close relationship with his family, his training, his performances, and a number of the difficulties encountered during his career. Various musicians are alluded to throughout, and there are casual references to several musical terms, making this volume appeal more to those interested in jazz or with more than an elementary knowledge of the subject. Surely, this work will garner the same respect as Collier's Louis Armstrong (Macmillan, 1985) and his other books about jazz.

From Kirkus Reviews
Characterizing Ellington as ``perhaps the most important figure in American music of the 20th century,'' the author looks at the composer's personality and career, focusing especially on his musical strengths and weaknesses. Collier, who has written several books on the history of jazzincluding a longer one on the Dukeclaims that Ellington didn't have the discipline to study either his instrument or music theory and that consequently he never became a brilliant pianist, while his longer compositions lacked cohesive structure. He did have a gifted ear, however, and, in working out musical ideas with his band (his preferred method of composition), he developed a fresh, unique, instantly recognizable sound that led to a long string of hits and standards. Collier succumbs occasionally to Jazz Historians' Diseasetedious recitation of names and personnel changesbut he makes clear what most of the musicians who played with Ellington contributed in the way of special techniques or abilities, while his musical analyses are easy to follow. Impossible to review this book objectively
By jive rhapsodist
THis book is famously perverse. I finally bought it - I've read it libraries for years. But finally I said to myself "Practice what you preach,yo! If you say you're interested in different filters and the way different kinds of people can look at the same thing, how can you NOT own the book that denigrates Ellington as a composer and damns him with faint praise?".

Look, if we were just talking about my personal opinion of Collier's opinions, this book would get ONE star. But it is a relatively well - researched book, given its condescending, borderline racist (nothing overt - just its insufferable patronizing tone) agenda.

Caveat Emptor, Baby!

Worked through the whole thing countless times for many of the exercises. Very informative and easy to understand, and also insightful. The author treats you like you are intelligent; you are not talked-down to nor does information seem overly dumbed-down like it does in many other psychology/self-help books.

I learned many very invaluable things from this workbook about why my emotions are the way they are, and how they work, and what it means. Also the exercises themselves are practical for the most part, and helpful. I literally would feel better after completing the exercises, instantly sometimes. Other times not instantly, but that's to be expected I think from anything in life.

As far as myself, I am NOT borderline or diagnosed with any mental illness; I am one of the people who simply felt they have at times unmanageable and overly painful emotions. I really appreciated about this book that the author accepts people like me as well. Many other books I looked at for help with emotions were so geared towards people with severe disorders that I started to fear I HAD borderline disorder simply because I have strong emotions. Not so.

I see from other reviews that there are people who DO have borderline who also found this workbook very helpful, and my opinion is that that signifies good things about the effectiveness and accuracy of the workbook. Seems to be helpful for a range of people and I think that's fantastic.

Did not give it 5 stars because unfortunately all of the work I put into it didn't seem to be permanent... I.E. don't go thinking that this is a magic cure. But it's very helpful, got me through some tough times, and if I were to go through it again I would probably try to incorporate certain exercises more slowly into daily habits in my life, for hopefully a more permanent effect.

Learning and applying the skills so thoughtfully written about in this book has helped me so much. I have a sense of mental and emotional control that I've never experienced before. I never realized I had any control over my emotions at all in fact. I'm still working on it, as I'm sure I always will, but my life is much better now. I really appreciate this book and it's author.

"Living is like tearing through a museum. Not until later do you really start absorbing what you saw, thinking about it, looking it up in a book and remembering- because you can’t take it all in at once." —Audrey Hepburn

On many occasions, she was approached to pen her autobiography, the definitive book of Audrey Hepburn, yet she never agreed. A beloved icon who found success as an actress, a mother and an humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn perfected the art of gracious living.

More philosophy than biography, How to Be Lovely revisits the many interviews Audrey gave over the years, allowing us to hear her voice directly on universal topics of concern to women the world over: careers, love lives, motherhood and relationships. Enhanced by rarely seen photographs, behind-the-scenes stories, and insights from the friends who knew her well, How to Be Lovely uncovers the real Audrey, in her own words.

While she would have been the last to say so, Audrey Hepburn was an expert in the art of being a woman. How to Be Lovely imparts whatever wisdom and insight she found along the way to the millions who grew up, or will grow up, wanting to be just like her.

Published to coincide with Audrey Hepburn’s would-be seventy-fifth birthday, How to Be Lovely offers a rare glimpse into the woman behind the mystique and the definitive guide to living genuinely with glamour and grace.

From Publishers Weekly
A breezy but sometimes insightful read, this hybrid mini-biography/female empowerment manual goes down like a soothing tonic for the 21st-century woman attempting to juggle life, career, family and, if there’s time, fashion. The waifish star and muse of Givenchy, Audrey could be quite the sage as well, turning out insightful phrases about working hard, living well and aging gracefully. Her simple, cautiously optimistic approach to life came as a result of her childhood in occupied Holland during World War II. The daughter of Baroness Ella van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, Audrey left Amsterdam for London as a teen to study ballet. Her dance aspirations, however, morphed into a Hollywood career. Hellstern arranges each chapter as instructive vignettes, with headings like "Be genuine," "Live without regret" "Listen well" and even "Get plenty of vitamin C"; these are followed by stories, anecdotes and quotes from Audrey and her admirers, and punctuated with b&w photos, both enchanting candid shots and glamorous stills. Enduring the challenges of womanhood-miscarriages, divorce and the balancing act of career and family-Audrey Hepburn exuded dignity and humility through her successes and failures. As Hellstern styles it, she ate what she wanted but still watched her figure, and devoted herself to global causes without becoming political. "I could never be cynical," Hepburn claimed. "I wouldn’t dare. I’d roll over and die before that." 68 b/w photos.

Introduction

When it comes to elegance and style, few women surpass Audrey Hepburn. She has become an adjective-so Audrey-describing some ethereal combination of grace, elegance, charm, and wisdom.

While her clothing style remains a grounding influence on fashion, it is her character that is certain to withstand the test of time. Audrey taught us that being a woman is as simple as knowing who you are, and who you are not.

And somehow we suspected that if anyone would have the right answers, it would be her: Amazing the questions they will ask characters like us . . . the questions-all the way from what do I think of love or how does it feel to be a star, to enormous ones, even political, with as many prongs as a pitchfork. Here I am, an innocent little actress trying to do a job, and it seems that my opinion on policy in the Middle East is worth something. I dont say I dont have an opinion, but I doubt its worth.

To the world, she represented all that a woman could be, and we wanted in. We still do. By looking at her words from interviews over the years, we may just find a new revelation or two, and certainly some we knew all along.

May the light she shared with the world shine on in the lives of those of us she continues to inspire.

one
Happiness

The most important thing is to enjoy your life-to be happy-thats all that matters.

A happy life has been pursued in every culture, in every country, in every generation. But after all this time, there are still no rules for how to get it. And the more you try to pin it down, the more elusive it seems.

By now, we surely know that money cant buy it. There are those who have very little and are very happy. And others who seem to have it all, but are not. Still, we all look for the next reason to be happy. What if it is not about what happens to us, what we own or where we live, but how we look at it?

Maybe those rose-colored glasses arent such a bad idea after all.

Attitude Is Everything
Once upon a time, Audrey Hepburn was a just a girl.

A girl who took ballet and dreamed of becoming the next Anna Pavlova. Who climbed trees with her brothers. Who read books in her room. Who often felt unsure in the world, but learned to get along. A girl who loved to be loved, just like the rest of us.

As she grew, there were the usual hardships we all find somewhere along the way. Disappointment. Frustration. Struggle. A dwindling bank balance. And some most of us can hardly fathom-overnight success, fame, miscarriages, studio execs, while the whole world watched.

Regardless of what life threw her way, Audrey was a person who sparkled. She never failed to remember what we too often forget-that life itself is a glorious opportunity.

Pick the day. Enjoy it-to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come. . . . The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present-and I dont want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.

Not to live for the day, that would be materialistic-but to treasure the day. I realize that most of us live on the skin-on the surface-without appreciating just how wonderful it is simply to be alive at all.

My own life has been much more than a fairy tale. Ive had my share of difficult moments, but whatever difficulties Ive gone through, Ive always gotten a prize at the end.

If my world were to cave in tomorrow, I would look back on all the pleasures, excitements and worthwhilenesses I have been lucky enough to have had. Not the sadnesses, not my miscarriages or my father leaving home, but the joy of everything else. It will have been enough.

But what is happiness except the simple harmony between man and the life he lives?
-Albert Camus

Listen to Your Mother Audreys mother, born Baroness Ella van Heemstra, grew up wanting more than anything else to be English, slim, and an actress, but her aristocratic heritage prevented such foolishness. Marriage and motherhood were on her agenda. The Baroness, as she preferred to be called, did marry. She also divorced because, as her friend so aptly put it, she preferred that to taking a lover, like most. Divorce was hardly commonplace, yet she stood tall as the single mother of two boys, Alexander and Ian.

Just a year later, she married Joseph Hepburn-Ruston. Together, they brought Audrey into the world. But it would be up to her mother to help her navigate through it.

Being the daughter of a baroness doesnt make you any different, except that my mother was born in 1900 and had had herself a very strict, Victorian upbringing, if you like. So, she was very demanding of us-of me and my brothers. Manners, as she would say, dont forget, are kindnesses. You must always be kind. Opening the door for old ladies is just a routine so that you know shes helped. And she was always very adamant about that.

My mother taught me to stand straight, sit erect, use discipline with wine and sweets and to smoke only six cigarettes a day.

I was given an outlook on life by my mother. . . . It was frowned upon not to think of others first. It was frowned upon not to be disciplined.

Its that wonderful old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second. This was the whole ethic by which I was brought up. Others matter more than you do, so dont fuss, dear; get on with it.

As a child, I was taught that it was bad manners to bring attention to yourself, and to never, ever make a spectacle of yourself. . . .

All of which Ive earned a living doing.

I can really take no credit for any talent that Audrey may have. If its real talent, its God-given. I might as well be proud of a blue sky, or the paintings in the Flemish exhibition at the Royal Academy.

-her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston

Keep It All in Perspective
Ten-year-old Audrey was just feeling settled at her boarding school outside London when her mother packed up the family and moved to Arnhem, Holland. World War II was coming and only among her own neutral Dutch would her mother, now a single parent, feel safe. Famous last words, Audrey would later say.

Just days after Audreys eleventh birthday, the Germans stormed into town. In the years that followed, food and liberty became scarce and treachery lurked everywhere. Audrey would lose friends, uncles, and nearly both brothers.

When liberation did come-on Audreys sixteenth birthday-the family had escaped with their lives, but the memories would last a lifetime.

Dont discount anything awful you hear or read about the Nazis. Its worse than you could ever imagine.

We lost everything, of course-our houses, our possessions, our money. But we didnt give a hoot. We got through with our lives, which was all that mattered.

At times like this, you learn about death, privation, danger, which makes you appreciate safety and how quickly it can change. You learn to be serious about what counts.

Being without food, fearful for ones life, the bombings-all made me appreciative of safety, of liberty. In that sense, the bad experiences have become a positive in my life.

It made me resilient and terribly appreciative for everything good that came afterward. I felt enormous respect for food, freedom, for good health and family- for human life.

Expect Less
By the age of sixteen, Audrey knew much more than most. She had already seen the worst mankind had to offer.

Audrey noticed that during the war people were kind and generous. But once the liberation came, not everyone had learned the lesson. How easily we are able to forget what really matters when it comes down to it.

Audrey always knew just what she wanted in life: safety, food, and family. The rest was just icing on the cake.

Being an actress just happened; I had no intention of it.
Ive had so much more than I ever dreamed possible out of life-[no] great disappointments or hopes that didnt work out . . .
Ive accomplished far more than I ever hoped to, and most of the time it happened without my seeking it.

Be Perfectly Human
Most of us never really knew Audrey. We knew Princess Anne, Holly Golightly, and Eliza Doolittle. In some ways, we made her into the ideal we all wanted her to be-perfect. An image that can be hard to live up to.

Audrey was one of us. She was as real as the girl next door, only smarter.

Truly, Ive never been concerned with any public image. It would drive me around the bend if I worried about the pedestal others have put me on. And also I dont believe it.

People seem to have this fixed image of me. In a way I think its very sweet, but its also a little sad. After all, Im a human being. When I get angry, I sometimes swear.

CHARADE
Cary and I had never met before we did Charade, so there we all were in Paris, about to have dinner at some terribly smart bistro. As it was early spring, Cary, who always dressed impeccably, was wearing an exquisite light-tan suit. I know I was thrilled to meet him, and I must have been terribly excited, because not ten seconds after we started chatting I made some gesture with my hand and managed to knock an entire bottle of red wine all over poor Cary and his beautiful suit. He remained cool. I, on the other hand, was horrified. Here wed only just been introduced! If I somehow could have managed to crawl under the table and escape without ever having to see him again, I happily would have.

Live Without Regret
For years, Audrey tried to balance her need for family with the worlds need to watch her onscreen, until one day she finally left movie-making behind altogether.

It was during the filming of Wait Until Dark, for which she would earn her fifth Oscar nomination, that it hit her. The long separation from her son Sean, now seven years old and in school, was just too much. She had to make a change. And change she did. In just under two years, she divorced, remarried, and gave birth to her second son, Luca. She also left Hollywood for home, not to be seen again on the big screen for close to ten years. It was the best decision she ever made.

It would be terribly sad, wouldnt it, to look back on your life in films and not know your children? For me theres nothing more pleasant or exciting or lovely or rewarding than seeing my children grow up . . . and they only grow up once, remember.

You can only hope to get a combination of happy work and a happy life.

One thing I would have dreaded would be to look back on my life and only have movies.

I never expected to be a star, never counted in it, never even wanted it. Not that I didnt enjoy it all when it happened. (But) its not as if I were a great actress. Im not Bergman. I dont regret for a minute making the decision to quit movies for my children.

I may not always be offered work, but Ill always have my family.

The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, by Alan Watts

At the root of human conflict is our fundamental misunderstanding of who we are. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the “outside” world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. In The Book, philosopher Alan Watts provides us with a much-needed answer to the problem of personal identity, distilling and adapting the ancient Hindu philosophy of Vedanta to help us understand that the self is in fact the root and ground of the universe. In this mind-opening and revelatory work, Watts has crafted a primer on what it means to be human—and a manual of initiation into the central mystery of existence.

Amazon.com Review
Modern Western culture and technology is inextricably tied to the belief in the existence of a self as a separate ego, separated from and in conflict with the rest of the world. In this classic book, Watts provides a lucid and simple presentation of an alternative view based on Hindu and Vedantic philosophy.

From the Inside Flap
A witty attack on the illusion that the self is a separate ego that confronts a universe of alien physical objects.

About the Author
Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestsellingThe Way of Zen.An avid lecturer,Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series,Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life,in the 1960s. Hedied in 1973.

Who Are You?
By Robert Morris
I read this book when it was first published in 1966, re-read it after an unexpected opportunity to meet Alan Watts just before he died (in 1973), and then re-read it again recently after having recommended it highly to a close personal friend. Long ago, I became convinced that the nature and extent of any book's impact are almost entirely dependent on (a) the nature and extent of our life experiences when reading a book and (b) the nature and extent of our ability to absorb and digest whatever that book may offer. Watts's The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are offers an excellent case in point. Frankly, Watts's personal impact on me now is greater than were the first and second readings of his book. At the beginning of our brief encounter, I immediately sensed his stunning intellect and compelling decency. More impressive by far was a sense of his spirituality. It was most evident in his eyes and tone of voice. More then twenty years later, I re-read The Book. What follows is an admittedly clumsy attempt to share my thoughts and feelings about it.

First, with regard to the title and subtitle, Watts explains that "The Book I am thinking about [and later wrote] would not be religious in the usual sense, but it would have to discuss many things with which religions have been concerned -- the universe and man's place in it, the mysterious center of experience which we call 'I myself.' the problems of life and love, pain and death, and the whole question of whether existence has meaning has meaning in [in italics] any sense of the word."

With regard to the subtitle, Watts explains that there is no need for a new religion or a new bible. "We need a new experience -- a new feeling of what it is to be 'I.' The lowdown (which is, of course, the secret and profound view) on life is that our normal sensation of self is a hoax, or, at best, a temporary role that we are playing, or have been conned into playing -- with our own tacit consent, just as every hypnotized person is basically willing to be hypnotized. The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego."

So, that was the book Watts was thinking about writing, and, the taboo to which he devotes most of his attention (directly or indirectly) throughout the book he eventually wrote.

What do I now think of this book? First, it retains its ecumenical spirit but in ways and to an extent I did not fully appreciate years ago. Watts is very respectful of all of the major religions, at least in terms of the common values they affirm; however, he also suggests (and I agree) that those values have been concealed by layer-after-layer of doctrine, policy, and procedure. Watts's point: "The standard-brand religions, whether Jewish, Christian, Mohammedan, or Buddhist, are -- as now practiced -- like exhausted mines very hard to dig." Also, I am again struck by the fact that Watts suggests a mindset which is inclusive, tolerant (and when appropriate, forgiving...especially of self), and at all times determined to continue a process of self-discovery. It seems that he wrote this book because he had become concerned about man's alienation from himself (herself) as well as from other human beings and from the physical world within which all of us struggle to achieve (in Abraham Maslow's terms) survival, then security, and eventually self-fulfillment.

This is not a book for dilettantes. Watts is quite serious when posing questions so easily phrased but so difficult to answer, at least responsibly. In his view, "for thousands of years human history has been a magnificently futile conflict, a wonderfully staged panorama of triumph and tragedies based on the resolute taboo against admitting that black goes with white [i.e. that diametrically opposed forces can co-exist, indeed nourish each other]. Nothing, perhaps, ever got nowhere with so much fascinating ado." Having recently re-read this book, I was reminded of what Whitman observed in Song of Myself: "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes."

I am also reminded of the key concept in Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death. He acknowledges that all of us die eventually. Only the suicide decides the circumstances in which physical death occurs. However, Becker suggests that there is another death that CAN be denied: That which occurs when when we become totally preoccupied with fulfilling others' expectations of us.

For me, that is the essential point in The Book. Watts concludes with a quotation of James Broughton's observations:

This is It
and I am It
and You are It
and so is That
and He is It
And She is It
and It is It
and That is That.

"To come on like IT -- to play at being God -- is to play the Self as a role, which is just what it isn't. When IT plays, it plays at being everything else."

"Who am I?" Alan Watts offers this book which can help to answer that question. However, the inevitably perilous journey of self-discovery can only be completed by each of us. And that journey may require many years of frustration and confusion...without any guarantee that any of us will reach the destination we seek. Our choice. It always was, is...and will be.

Still useful 60's classic
By magellan
I never gave Watts his full due of respect back in the 60's and 70's, because at the time I (and others) saw him as a trendy popularizer perhaps cashing in on the interest of that segment of the western readership who are perennially eastern-obsessed and therefore too naive and uncritical of their philosophy. Back then, there were just too many young people, who, having rejected whatever western culture they were brought up in, simply accepted, lock, stock, and barrel, Tao, Vedanta, and/or Buddhism after having read one or two books and therefore having finally discovered "the truth."
Well, looking back, that's perhaps too harsh an assessment, and I will say that Watts's book is an extremely well-written, concise, and clear introduction to Vedantic thought that is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. I recently picked up the book after 30 years, and found that in many ways I enjoyed it even more than I did back then.
As others have commented more completely on the usefulness and relevance of the philosophy in the book, I will just mention one thing. I really enjoyed his discussion about the fear of death. Watts points out that the way western culture deals practically and philosophically with death, isolating the individual from feeling a part of the universe as a whole on the one hand, and as basically a taboo subject, on the other, is unproductive and ultimately does nothing to resolve the issue. He points out that the denial process of sweeping it under the rug only makes it worse, and that ultimately the only solution is to just face one's fear. If death frightens you or makes you afraid, well then, be afraid. At least be honest about it, because that's the first step to realistically starting to deal with the problem.
The reality is, that no matter how certain one is of one's religion, no-one truly knows if there is an afterlife. It is possible that all these beliefs simply represent a wishful-thinking and wish-fulfillment response to a realistic fear--the fear of death. Until one admits that and confronts the issue head on, it will continue to haunt you despite your most cherished beliefs to the contrary.

Full disclosure: I first read this book while traveling through the mountains of Ecuador, tripping regularly on mescaline-filled San Pedro cactus, so my consensus of the book might be a bit biased. However, I have since read this book (along with his other classic, 'The Wisdom of Insecurity') while not experiencing full ego death and spiritual unity with all of eternity, and I must say, it has still changed the that way Iook at the world. This is a book which one can bestow on a younger person whom seems ready to explore consciousness and the concept of Self using a critical eye, just be sure to tuck a few tabs of the purest Lazarus one can acquire into the sleeve along with it. There is only one thing happening in this universe, and it's all You.

Masque (The Two Monarchies Sequence), by W.R. Gingell

"...an inventive and funny mystery with a dynamic lead, which will make you want to pick up the next book in the series." Self-Publishing Review, 4 Stars

Beauty met the Beast and there was . . . Bloody murder?

It’s the Annual Ambassadorial Ball in Glause, and Lady Isabella Farrah, the daughter of New Civet’s Ambassador, is feeling pleasantly scintillated.

In the library is Lord Pecus, a charming gentleman whose double mask hides a beastly face, and who has decided that Isabella is the very person to break the Pecus curse.

In the ball-room is young Lord Topher, who is rapidly falling in love with an older woman.

And in the card-room, lying in a pool of his own blood, is the body of one of Isabella’s oldest friends: Raoul, Civet’s Head Guardsman. The papers sewn into his sash seem to suggest espionage gone wrong, but Isabella is not so certain.

Lord Pecus, as Commander of the Watch, is of the opinion that Isabella should keep out of the investigation and out of danger. Isabella is of the opinion that it is her murder to investigate, and that what a certain Beast-Lord doesn’t know won’t hurt him. . . .

Will Isabella find the murderer before Lord Pecus does, or will she end her investigation as a bloody spatter on the parlour floor?

"What makes Masque so much fun is the narrative voice. It mixes a 19thcentury and modern voice with great humor throughout. World-building is alsovery well done. All the ingredients are there for a unique murder mystery fairytale, and Gingell blends these genres together very well. The book is an inventive and funny mystery with a dynamic lead, which will make you want to pick up the next book in the series."-Self-Publishing Review,4 Stars

Masque
By Stephanie
Lady Isabella Farrah, the older and unmarried daughter of the Ambassador of New Civet happily spends her days assissting her father with his duties. At the masquerade ball for Glause, Isabella is taken with the mysterious and magic Lord Pecus; called the Beast Lord. Lord Pecus has been cursed have the face of a beast and always wears a magical mask in order to disguise his true face. As the ball progresses and Isabella finds herself dancing with men too young for her, she also stumbles across he murder scene of her friend and Civet’s Head Guardsman, Raoul. Isabella can not help but be involved in the investigation that is lead by Commander of the Watch, Lord Pecus. However, when her father is implicated in the murders, Isabella decides to be held in custody in his place at Lord Pecus’ manor. While she is imprisoned Isabella will not only try to solve the mystery herself, but try to unravel the Beast Lord’s curse.

This is an enchanting and witty re-telling of Beauty and the Beast with a great mystery woven throughout. I automatically fell in love with Isabella’s character as well as some of her sidekicks. She is just as capable as the men, not to mention incredibly inquisitive, intelligent and brave, even when it lands her in trouble. As well as her inquisitive nature, she had an incredible sense of fashion and was no fool for love. The scenes where she and Lord Pecus interacted were always entertaining and I couldn’t wait for their next encounter. Lord Pecus’ background and curse is still a bit of a mystery to me and I wish I could have known more about him. The mystery was exciting as well, even though I had part of it figured out rather early. The blending of the fairy tale and new mystery worked very well.

Recommended for readers of the Parasol Protectorate series, Isabella reminded me a lot of Alexia. Isabella and Lord Pecus’ relationship also had the same feel as Alexia and Lord Maccoon.

A Book I'll Share and Re-read
By Lill Hawkins
There are very few authors whose books I re-read. I've just added W.R. Gingell to the top of that short list after reading Masque in two sittings.

This is the best fantasy I've read in a long time. It's difficult to combine fantasy, world-building, horrible murders, mystery and humor into a mix that works, but somehow, the author does just that and makes it look easy.

Usually, even when I'm reading, my mind is busy thinking about other things in the background. After the first few pages of Masque, my mind was immersed in the world of Civet and Lacuna, trying to solve the mystery of the murder of Lady Farrah's guardsman friend. I do so love the character of Lady Farrah. She's strong without being overbearing. Thrill-seeking without being foolhardy. Capable of taking care of herself and the people she loves, but also vulnerable and smart enough to seek and accept help at times. She's also very witty and intelligent and can hold her own, even with the beastly but personable and equally witty Lord Pecus.

I also loved the other fully-fleshed main and some minor characters. Her young servants made me laugh, as did her friends in the horse guards. Lord Pecus was one of the most intriguing and mysterious characters I've run into between the covers of a book. I do wish that there had been more information about his curse, but maybe that will come out in a future book with these characters in it?

The romance was "clean", no explicit sex and it didn't overwhelm or take away from the mystery or fantasy aspects of the story. The banter between the two romantic interests reminded me of Katherine Hepburn and Bogart in the African Queen or Tracy and Hepburn in one of their movies. The scene where Lord Pecus proposes to Lady Farrah for the first time was very funny and set the mood for their relationship, which took a while to develop and was iffy at times.

The murders in the book are gruesome but integral to the story, not gratuitous. The world that Civet is in was very well depicted, but somehow the author explained the world without explaining it, but rather by showing it as the story unfolded. Not an easy thing to do. I'm not an easy reader of fantasy. Terry Pratchett is my standard and Gingell lived up to it. I can tell if a book is out of the ordinary by whether or not it fades from my memory soon after I read it. This one hasn't and won't. I can tell that I'll be hearing and seeing scenes from Masque until they nudge me to re-read it somewhere down the road.

As a footnote, I really enjoyed the cover and the small illustrations before each chapter. I don't usually notice things like that because I'm not a very visual person. I'll read a good book with a boring cover, just because of the description. But Masque's cover pulled me in and the little chapter decorations really added to the overall satisfaction of reading the book.

I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who likes fantasy and even readers who don't think they do. It's a very good read in any genre. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Fun and Witty
By Jen
Masque, besides the lovely cover, provided a delightful respite.

A reimagining of the Beauty and the Beast tale, Masque has a remarkable freshness and a unique approach. It is light and funny with charming characters -- in spite of the rather dreadful murders that occur.

Lady Isabella Farrah is the daughter of Civet's Ambassador to Glause and a very independent minded, happily unmarried spinster in her late twenties. Attending the Annual Ambassadorial Ball, Isabella finds herself besieged by the much younger Lord Topher, who seems determined to fall in love with her. Isabella has no intentions of letting his budding interest go further, but wants to let him down gently.

In the meantime, Lord Pecus does catch her interest. Known as the Beast Lord, Lord Pecus is under a curse and always wears a masque. Her friend Dylesia has done her best to dislodge the masque, quite unsuccessfully. This piques Isabella's curiosity.

Then events at the ball go haywire when an old and trusted friend is murdered and suspected of espionage. And away we go.

Isabella is a daunting investigator. Gathering allies who are dedicated and a little in awe of her, she proceeds at will to tackle the twists that occur. Even when she ends up as a hostage, Isabella manages to untangle many of the threads to the mystery.

I loved the dialogue. Isabella is never at a loss for just the right words for the occasion. Gingell has created amusing, articulate characters who romp through the pages, enjoying themselves immensely.

A light, clever, and engaging fairy tale retelling that manages to be fresh and original.

I had 3 minor quibbles. I won't mention them here, but don't think that they put me off the book. It was great fun!

Kindle purchase. :) for .99 and well worth it!

Buildings across time
By TR Worthington
I'm reading this book as requirement for a history class in an Architecture undergrad program. I'm sure most who will buy this book will read it for the same or a similar reason. I'm only through the first 1/4 of the book. It's full of pictures and descriptions of notable structures in a given time period and well organized chronologically. It seems the authors avoid drawing fully developed conclusions that explain the purpose for many early structures/dwellings. Maybe omitting this type of conjecture keeps things more factual. I get a dose of the "theories" in lectures on the subject, and that makes the reading much more interesting.

My Life: My Awakening, by Maurice

My Life: My Awakening is a gripping, urban coming-of-age story that is as real as the air you are consuming. Maurice Maynard Washington, also known as Mana Mane, was an innocent nine-year-old – full of naivet and wholesomeness – when he was suddenly thrust into the underworld of the ghetto culture. Drugs, gangs and violence colored his life through adulthood as he learned to survive and even prosper in the challenging world of Watts’ Nickerson Garden Housing Projects. This book offers a detailed playbook of a harrowing, sometimes comical series of adventures and tragedies that lend insight to the world of missteps, wrong turns and reversals, contrasted by pure innocence, heroics and outstanding saves. This book, Mana Mane’s story, is the story of a specific individual that gives voice to so many untold others. This book is not just a ghetto story, though. It is an adventure, an odyssey less traveled by the masses, yet too frequently traveled by the marginalized. This story is an American story; will you come along for the ride?
