Essential Reading for Leaders Accountable for Results

Gurus come and go, each marketing their frameworks. However few stand the test of time like Michael Hammer is to Business Process Reengineering and Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton are to Balanced Score card. Similarly Richard Lynch, Jim Dowling and John Diezemann are to the Strategy Architecture. Their book "Capable Company" has stood the test of time. It was one of the first, and remains amongst the best methods to not only build a company's strategy, but they take it to the next level ... a framework to actually execute and operationalize a business strategy in a way that dramatically increases the performance of an organization.
These days most business books tell us what we need to do, Capable Company takes this further and outlines how to do it. It is about time some of the leaders in the field understand that there is a difference between the what and how, after all, we are all held accountable for result ... and to deliver results we need to understand how to do things differently.
Having spent close to 30 years as both a leader within organization as well as a consultant to fortune 500 companys driving for results. Capable Company has helped me better define how to driven change, transform a company and deliver. Well Worn Book -- My Go To for Business Mission Execution

The Capable Company is one of the best books I have read on business strategy execution. The book clarifies the fuzzy front end stuff that is a prequisite for portfolio management. It takes you one practical step-at-a-time from visioning and strategy development all the way through project selection.
I especially like Chapter 10, Continually Refreshing Capabilities, which concisely wraps up the approach detailed throughout the book in a system that can be applied on an ongoing basis.
Chapter 4, Make Strategy Visible,is another favorite. This chapter points out a barrier to alignment that IMO is overlooked by many executives. The lesson of the "Capable Company Eye Chart", while humorous, is also the sad reality in too many companies.
