Review
"This is the fourth edition of a popular overview of topics in otolaryngology. The outline format of presentation provides an easy-to-read method to review the materials in a concise yet comprehensive fashion. The purpose is to provide a concise review of otolaryngology. Given the breadth of topics in this area, this book meets the objective of providing clinicians a compact source of quick reviews.
The audience is clinicians at all stages of their careers. Based on the popularity of previous editions, the authors have succeeded in providing clinicians with a credible and comprehensive reference.
The book concisely reviews rhinology, otology, laryngology, head and neck oncology, endocrinology, and facial plastics, with a chapter devoted to each division that highlights the most relevant pathologies, diagnostic methods, and treatment recommendations. This is a well-regarded essential reference in the field of otolaryngology. This new edition includes a new chapter in pediatric otolaryngology and continues to provide clinicians with easy access to a quick overview of the different areas of otolaryngology. 4 Stars!" --Kent Lam, MD, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, DOODY'S (2014)
"This is a well known textbook across the Atlantic, but UK readers may be less familiar with ti, even in its fourth edition. It is a handy paperback size...Nearly 750 pages are packed with fine print, in a multi-author text...I was impressed by the depth of coverage but, especially, by the topicality.
This is a well done, truly updated, revision...[A]ll chapters are modernised to include the latest diagnostic and therapeutic information...There is a new Anaesthetic and Paediatric ORL chapter, new work on transoral robotic surgery and, of particular interest to me, coverage of sleep apnoea. I have rarely learnt so much, in seconds of thumbing through a textbook, as I did reading about central sleep apnoea...[It] is ideal for fast access reference and revision on the flight to the exit exams! In practice I have opened this many times, picking subjects at random and found the writing style reader friendly throughout." --Liam M. Flood, FRCS, FRCSI, Middlesbrough, Journal of Laryngology & Otolaryngology (2013)
"The intended audience is all-inclusive. The text is a worthwhile reference for those in the beginning stages of their career, such as medical students rotating on-service seeing otolaryngology patients and procedures for the first time. Allied health professionals serving otolaryngology patients may use it as a quick reference during clinics. It is especially useful to trained otolaryngologists seeking to rapidly review an organized handheld resource for board examination review.
There are many positive changes from the prior edition including a more in-dept pediatric and allergy chapter and the addition of a sleep medicine chapter. The index is more user-friendly with tabs between chapters to allow for quick reference...
The text can be used in its current form as a quick reference for specific topics or easily digested over the weekend for trained otolaryngologists. The differential diagnosis figures using the "KITTENS" model are logical, and the reconstructive flap illustrations are well done and reproducible for board study and recall...
Overall, this is a very nice reference. I would recommend this as a part of every training otolaryngologist s library, designating it as especially useful for a comprehensive yet succinct board review."
--Kristen Hurst, University of Iowa, Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology, (2015)
"The Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery: Clinical Reference Guide, fourth edition, by Pasha and Golub is designed to be a pocket guide spanning the entire breadth of the field. The previous editions are fairly well known to otolaryngology trainees. Organized into 11 chapters, the book reviews topics in rhinology, otology, laryngology, head and neck cancer, facial plastics, trauma, sleep medicine, and endocrine and salivary gland surgery. The fourth edition also introduces a pediatric chapter that consolidates materials specific to the pediatric population that had previously been scattered throughout various sections in previous editions. In addition, there are 4 appendices that offer easy-to-access information on cancer staging, cranial nerves, vaccinations, and anesthetic agents and considerations. The body of the text retains its standard structure of bullet-point, outline format writing.
Informative and concise, Pasha and Golub s pocket handbook is often thought of as the essential quick reference text for residents and medical students. Small enough to fit into white coat pockets (although rather hefty), its bulleted format allows readers the ability to review a topic in a brief amount of time. The 67-page index has been well revised, making searching through the book easier than initial editions. The content of the book is densely packed with information ranging from anatomy to epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. The bolded text highlights facts that are high yield and often tested. Those who desire longer prose may find the outline format of the book frustrating and insufficient. However, the book is meant to offer an overview of topics rather than in-depth explorations; a small section often encompasses an entire chapter in standard texts.
As evidenced by the popularity of previous editions, this book provides a valuable reference, especially in preparation for inservice and board examinations. Its utility, however, extends to a broader audience than trainees and newcomers to the field; its comprehensive overview of topics in otolaryngology also provides a useful resource for seasoned practitioners as well as primary and emergency care providers." --Eugenie Du, MD, Annals of Otology, Rhinology, & Laryngology, (2014)
